I have this feeling that this thread did not go the direction Katt thought it would. :/

Edit: I just realised I was 16 like Katt 16 years ago... Feels bad man. Course back in those days we only had pirate copies of 2k3 floating around and there were no artists making asset packs so we had to do everything ourselves.
Yeah. I started making games when I was fourteen and everything I used was either RTP, edited RTP, or, god-forbid, rips. There wasn't anyone making original RPG assets for some time, and some of the people who stepped up to do so were treated so poorly that they left the community.

I've always believed that one of the most important aspects of being a dev is doing the best you can with the tools and resources that are available to you. If you can't afford fancy custom graphics, you can still make games with what's available for free. You can even use them as placeholders and come back and draw your own after the game is done. I did that with a few projects back in the day.
Absolutely, and even then you dont need to be able to make good graphics to be able to make a good game (or even a good looking game).

Totally! Look at that screenshot! That's got charm! ^_^
KrimsonKatt - we have a lot of artists in the community, and on the site. They deserve to be paid for the work that they do, especially if they share their content with the rest of the community.

Now, I know it sucks that someone is going to move their work behind a paywall, but when there's quality work, why shouldn't they be allowed to make some money off what they do? It takes a long time to make art of any quality and that is time they don't spend playing games/seeing family/doing other things they want. Everyone has a set amount of time in this world and if they wanted to spend that time honing their craft and then making money from their skills, why the hell shouldn't they?

If you're that upset about it, learn a craft - you yourself said you're not working at the moment. Spend your time learning how to make your own shit. Yes, it'll take time. Yes, it'll take effort, but maybe if you actually try to do your own shit you'll appreciate how hard it is and how much work goes into creation. And then you might end up with skills and ability enough to make your own patreon and get your own commissions.

(Also, holy shit, the youtube thing. Dude, do you know how much time goes into recording, editing and uploading videos, maintaining a social presence, interacting with your fans and all of that jazz? A lot of people who are in that arena also go into merchandising because you can't just make mad bank unless you're super lucky with timing, have the skills to make it work, charisma to draw people and and keep people watching... etc. You don't just make a video and suddenly become famous and have a career out of it. You gotta work hard at that, it doesn't just come to you. You're doing a bunch of people a huge disservice just thinking it's as easy as record and upload. >.<; )

That aside, if you'd actually READ the announcement you'd know that the sets that were released for free are still going to be on their site FOR FREE. It is only the newest stuff that they are making from now onwards that will be behind a pay wall.

Also, his highest teir in Patreon is $5 and you recieve a lot of shit for that.

Please chill and get your facts straight before you start whining, my dude.

Pretty much everyone.

This is some really neat work, and yes, they have every right to charge for it. Just be glad they're leaving their old stuff free. Also, I remember being 16, or a kid in general. I can't imagine the life I'd have to lead to believe that I'm entitled to any of this stuff for free.
He's not paywalling his free 900 battlers. Just future stuff will no longer be free. You should really double check before making a PSA <:3c

What people like Yanfly, Olivia, Aekashics, and that one VX Ace Japanese guy who made VX Ace face sets are doing is making content and charging an absurd amount for it when they probably work another job and are making tons of money by owning a monopoly on certain types of plugins and charging absurd prices. I'm not saying everything should be free, far from it. Heck,

Also I'm sorry what?
This kind of attitude is exactly why people are paywalling. You really should put your shoes on the other person's. It's not about the job that makes them paywall their stuff (even though Yanfly's stuff is all free), it's attitude like yours and the demands of the community (not saying everyone but a very vocal group) that they don't want to deal with. The support bullshit that comes out with their professionally made stuff is extremely high.

If you actually do the math and look at the level of experience involved into making stuff like this, it's a miracle we're getting them at this price.
I'm utterly shocked some nice folk MADE 900 free battlers in the first place. No one has to do that. No one needs to do that. I still think this folk is being too generous. So it's really not cool to see people like OP act entitled to hard work of someone being so generous that they are almost harming themself.
Hell Lil Z won't make 900 free battlers for his own game that he learned pixel art to do himself...
hell, if even I can attempt to make shitty artworks and resources, you can too

That and This

If I thought OP was still around I'd explain WHY art costs so much and why a "monopoly"* on assets for a niche indie engine generally does not equate to a living wage, much less the extravagant largesse he assumed.

But I'm p. sure y'all know that all already.

*It's not a monopoly at all

Your pixel art is so clean and easy to read!

kentona's always had a nice style!

edit: oh yeah the topic. uh. i threw a few bucks at aekash when nessy tweeted about this the other day lol. i don't even have a use for the battlers atm but i respect his hard work (and have put hundreds of my own dollars into RM* devs and freelancers over the years)

i fucking love the completely unbidden hollow knight ad. wtf haha

Haha yeah that was a bit out of left field. And why does Hallow Knight deserve everyone's money but people who made RPG Maker assets don't deserve anything?
honestly, theres no point putting a paywall on something that was previously avaialbe for free. what this will do is funnel people away from the creator's website and towards some uncredited site like pinterest
Hi there, I can somewhat sympathise with your circumstances. I have to contend with:
  • formally diagnosed autism

  • associated social anxiety, demand avoidance, low stress threshold, and depressive tendencies

  • stress induced IBS

  • monocular vision, resulting in no depth perception, meaning no driver's license

That said, I also:
  • have been using RPG Maker since I got hold of 2k3 at 13

  • taught myself how to use the engine and create pixel art

  • created a strong support network of close friends and developed and maintained coping mecanisms including social masking and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

  • got a degree in Games Art & Design

  • have had a job since 14 (paper round, then 5 years in retail alongisde college and art school, then 1 year admin, and 3 years remote customer service before finally breaking into a full-time salaried design career 5 years ago)

  • have a wife and two kids

  • have released games (not all of them good)

  • have released comics (also of varying quality)

  • do freelance work for others' indie games and comics

  • refuse to let my issues define me.

You know some of the things I learned?
  • Art is hard

  • Coding is hard

  • Music is hard

  • Finding good, reliable, artists and programmers is hard

  • People can make a good living doing these as full-time jobs

  • People can earn much more professionally compared to the pennies their RPG Maker stuff brings in

Aekeshics, Yanfly, Olivia, and anyone else who charges for their specialist skills or runs a Patreon to top up their income deserves to do so. They're actually astonishingly cheap for what you get and I'd go as far as to say they're all significantly undercharging.

I'm happy to pay for music packs, graphics, plugins, etc. because I know how many years these people spent learning their craft and I'm grateful that, of all the avenues open to them, they chose RPG Maker despite the engine's undeserved poor reputation and primarily young userbase that likely has little disposable income. (That said, I recognise there's quite a few of us "old guard" still knocking about.)

Turns out the free resources aren't being moved behind a paywall and will remain free. It's just new stuff that requires payment.

Sam, that's amazing! :DDDDDDD I'm so glad you stuck with it and tried so many things! ^_^
Also another PSA: if you're looking to shame greed, it's probably better to go after corporations obsessed with growth management instead of independent individuals trying to get by, js.
Honestly, I feel a little bit bad for KrimsonKatt here. I think his attentions were noble enough in trying to warn those who use Aekashics’ Battle Sprites that the artist was going to start charging money for his work and that anybody who uses them for their projects, or whatever, should probably get whatever they can before they’re no longer free, but I think he tripped himself up a bit by using phrases like “denying hundreds of potential creators” and “He is doing this solely out of greed” was PROBABLY not the right choice of words here, as I agree with everybody else that the artist has every right to charge whatever the heck he or she wants if they decide to start asking for money for all of their hard work that they do. Just because something was free for so long doesn’t mean that it will always stay free forever. And people have bills to pay and need to make a living as well. So if I was this Aekashics guy and I had a talent like his – I’d probably start charging money for it too. And besides, like Nessiah and Liberty have already pointed out: you still get access to over 900 Battle Sprites for free expect for all of his new stuff coming in the future - which is still a sweet, sweet steal of a deal, actually!

Look, I’m a lot like you, KrimsonKatt: When it comes to my drawing skills, especially against some of the more talented artists on this site, like JosephSeraph, Nessiah, MakioKuta and unity to name a few – they would absolutely CRUSH whatever the hell I could put out on my own. But you know what? That’s okay! Their artistic skills are one of their greatest attributes because they’ve put in the time and effort throughout the years and got a lot better with practice and learning and picking up new techniques along the way. While I may not be able to stand up to them with my current artistic skills, I could always try and one-up them another way, like with my writing prowess and event planning abilities, since those are the two fields that I feel like I excel the best at. And even if that’s not enough - hey, just keep trying your best and see what you can do on your own. There’s no shame if you’re not cut out to be a great artist like those guys. Remember, when it comes to making games in the professionals, it takes a team of many talented individuals that might only excel at one or two positions rather than everything. While somebody on a team might be in charge of creating battle sprites for a particular game, there’s always somebody else that might be in charge of marketing or playtesting that the other can’t do and visa versa.

Besides, you can always do what Sooz’s suggested and try and first make a game with using either RTP, edits and / or rips for your first prototype build for starters, and then do whatever you can on your own; and then, if you want take your project commercial and go beyond a freeware title, then you can always ask around, see how much it might cost for the graphics and resources that you need for your project, and then see if that’s within your budget range and see if that's something that makes financial sense for you. If you know that you’re going to make money and make a profitable return on it - then go for it! But there’s nothing wrong if your game ends up being simply just a freeware title posted on RMN and other sites like that as your own personal passion project. Besides, things can always change upon a game release, anyway. Hell, just look at games like Hero’s Realm, Ara Fell and Beloved Rapture to name a few: They started off as freeware titles with a lot of ripped resources and graphics at one time, and then, after many years later after those games were released to the public, the creators of those said games decided to then go commercial and redo their games with custom resources by either handling it themselves or asking for assistance elsewhere. Anything can change along the way.

So, with all that said - thank you KrimsonKatt for the reminder. Just make sure that next time that you think about what you post before you post it, okay? Don’t let this thread and its comments get you down. I know that you probably meant well.
It's common to see the younger generation think they should get everything for free. Thanks internet.

We used to have to pay money to get NES games.

Bro if you think entitlement is solely the domain of "kids these days" or that it's related to new technology and not baked into humanity, you need to go outside and see more people.
Back in my day everything was worse, except it was good somehow.

Which part of my post suggested I think it's "solely" anything? I see enough people thank you very much.
