RMN'S FAVOURITE VIDEO GAME TRACKS OF ALL TIME
Posts
I feel like we spend so much time, as gamers, talking about games that were the most enjoyable to play. I'm currently in the midst of listening to my favourite video game tunes on YouTube, and I felt like coming here to shine a spotlight on video game music. When you think of your favourite old-school video games, what is one of the first things you always think of? That's right, it's the music.
When you imagine Tetris, you hear Korobeiniki in your head.
When you think of Final Fantasy 6, you hear Terra's theme.
When you think of Mario, you think of the original game's overworld theme and its many incarnations.
I want to know, what themes from video games resonates with you guys the most? For fun, I'm even going to keep track! Pick, off the top of your head, your ten most memorable tracks from video games. I'll score them the same way we score games in the "favourite RPG Maker games" (1st is 10, 2nd is 9, 3rd is 8, etc. until you reach 10th with is 1).
So, have at it! I'm genuinely curious to know what you guys feel are your most favourite/memorable video game tunes of all time. I'll post mine in a separate reply just to avoid clutter.
So, in recap:
1. Pick your top ten favourite video game tunes of all time.
2. I'll score them and add them to the list.

Man, this can be tough, but it's because there's a lot of great tracks that were once iconic and definitely good, but then they just got so overused that they've become a bit of a joke, like One Winged Angel. Then instead, some people just tend to go for the underrated tracks that are less popular.
I chose like 20+ songs and then rationalized that there weren't any wrong choices in the lot and rolled with it
Yeah I can't actually pick a top 10 individual tracks. There's so much out there and my definition of "favorite" varies between stuff I like because it's send-this-to-the-library-of-congress it's-really-good music or stuff that's objectively dumb but still fun. Top ten games... maybe, roughly ordered:
1. Umineko no Naku Koro ni
a million different tracks by a million different people all notable in their own right that got me into a lot of different genres. just really solid horror sound and music you wouldn't expect to show up as a game OST and it packed a /punch/
2. Imperishable Night (touhou8)
there's basically /still/ a cottage industry in Japan of remixing ZUN's games' OSTs, including this one, 15 years later. just really fun, synthy stuff
3. CLANNAD
a lot of memorable melodic stuff, and even if most soundtracks from Key games are better through arrange albums, still really classic stuff from Shinji Orito + Jun Maeda
4. Yume Nikki
it's a bunch of droning sounds and simple almost non-music... it's what makes the game what it is (could never play it more than 30 minutes though), also opened the indie horror genre for a more electronic sound
5. Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
extremely evocative orchestral soundtrack that's held up way better than the game itself
6. Kanon
trashfire of a game, never finished, still a classic soundtrack
7. Sonic 3 & Knuckles
features MJ. oh and the best chippy music has been and always will be chippy Sonic music. fight me.
8. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
there aren't so many standout tracks so much as this was secretly a game about music, and paying attention to sound through the whole thing made the game that much better
9. Smash Bros. Brawl
this is probably cheating, but having a bunch of Nintendo's in-house best remix their classics and then releasing the whole thing piecemeal in the buildup to the game's release was really memorable
10. Final Fantasy 6
also in the "never played more than 30 minutes" pile but I still think this is the best FF has ever sounded
Honorable mentions: Donkey Kong Country, AIR, Gitarooman, Etrian Odyssey 2, Mega Man 9

I dug up a lot of tracks. The hipster in me has decided to limit myself, I'll exclude all the super popular tracks and limit my list to one track per game. (There's probably only a few FF tracks that'd make my list anyway.)

Oh, hell yes. I was so close to including that one myself.
I expect the master list to become massive with only a few tracks getting >10 points, simply due to just how much video game music there is out there.
Also this is fucking hard
e: And now I saw Psy's list and remembered that visual novels exist, which makes it even harder

I wish I knew how to contribute to this meaningfully but basically half of my list is Undertale. Oh well, lemme give it a try anyway. You'll notice that pretty much almost every single one is either a final boss theme or a normal boss theme.

I wanna list more. T_T;;;;
EDIT: FUCK IT!

10. Mysterious Tower (Dragon Quest 8)
Beautiful symphonic theme that combines both warmth and melancholy. Has a flare of Joe Hisashi's Ghibli scores, or an impressionist classical piece.
9. Cyan (Final Fantasy VI)
FF6 has dozens of A+ tracks. But there's something about the instrumentation for Cyan's theme that radiates determination.
8. Spark Mandrill Stage (MMX)
All the tracks from MMX-MMX2 are great, but this stage's music probably best encapsulates the frenetic rock/prog rock style scores of those SNES era games. Fills you with high adrenaline and focus when playing as a kid.
7. Heavenly Flight (Dragon Quest 3)
Striking example of what can be achieved with the SNES SPC/soundchip.
6. The Extreme (FFVIII)
I swear, choosing this one over OWA isn't hipster-baiting. XD But I thought it'd be better to keep one song per game. As a child, I remember noticing how this track had strands of both Liberti Fatali and Vincent's theme from FF7 woven in, before evolving into a prog rock track that was entirely its own. Starts off slow, but steadily draws you into the battle.
5. Spirit Temple (Ocarina)
OOT has a momentous soundtrack, but Koji really nailed it with this theme. A great combination of wonderment, fear, dread; as well as some nice instrumentation inspired by various middle eastern culture(s).
4. To The Ancient Land (Shadow of the Colossus)
I can't give Kow Otani, the composer of SOTC, nearly enough credit, as he so successfully infused a PS2-era (and visually drab) title with such robust wonderment, that it impresses me to this day. The opening song is both soothing, mysterious, and ethereal.
3. Forest Interlude (DKC2)
I love the entire DKC2 OST, so this was a complete tossup between Stickerbrush/Krook's March. David Wise became iconic literally from this one game alone, and he never has quite duplicated his excellence here.
2. Threshold (Journey)
Well, what hasn't already been said about Austin Wintory's chilling work on Journey? My rambling can't do it much justice. The flute in the opening bit of this song gives a nice sense of levity to an otherwise brooding and melancholic score.
1. Main Theme of FF7
What can I say? The remake's got me in a mood. The main theme, though, has always been a classic Uematsu piece. Although he relies on simple melodies, it's collectively very wondrous music that tells the entire story in its 6:30 scope. It has a sense languor and remembrance, which is appropriate for the countless hours that many of us spent with FF7.
