PIRACY, WHY?

Ok first of all, this is not to encourage piracy.
Nor is it to post links to where stuff can be pirated.

I can not be responsible if the 1/6,000,000,000 chance that this is found and used as evidence against you by some giant company to sue you for pirating comes true. I would also point out that this is not for lame jokes about pirates, but that would mean someone would make one for sure.

That said, do you ever pirate anything, why do you pirate those things, and for what reasons do you think people in general pirate things?

I do occasionally pirate some games, such as older games that can no longer really be found to buy (such as SimCity2000), games that I once had but the CD was lost or scratched with time (my copy of Warcraft II), and Spore because the pirated version works better :-X. I also randomly download music that I hear without caring whether it's legal or not. I will never pirate from an indie company though.

For why people in general pirate things, I do believe there are several reasons. For one, cost. There are three sides to this really, minors who don't have the money to / parents won't give the money to / to lazy to get a job and pay for the game, cheapskates, and people who live in countries that they can't make as much money in, and so don‘t really have the cash to pay for a game. Some of those people spend a large amount of their wages on paying for a computer and internet, but they technically save money by pirating games/music/etc. that otherwise they wouldn't be able to get. Also, added onto the country idea, availability. If you're in some small country far away from the U.S., it's probably going to be hard to go and legally by a Microsoft game. (And also, if you're a minor chances are your parents aren't going to go out and buy that Ao rated game for you.) Such as this quote from a different forum:
In my country (Romania), I guess the first reason of game piracy would be price, and the second would be availability.
The average monthly wage here in Romania is about 250$ and most gamers are young, so rely on parents to provide them with allowance.
Most companies don't consider discounts or lower prices to match the buying power of the customers here (for example Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare costs here about 95$, with the 19% taxes) and kids just don't have the money to buy such games, and parents would rather buy food, clothes and other more important things with the money.
Even if you would want to buy some games, in some cases you can't or you don't benefit from 100% of the game's features. For example, a major game seller in Romania decided to stop selling Xbox360 games here because games couldn't be validated or there was no support for the games in Romania and if there were problems with the DVDs you would have to send them in US or something like that (Microsoft considers the market here too small to bother and while they import consoles and games, the console repairs take months and in some cases don't even bother to send a replacement DVD for the bought game)

As for pirating games, some people might pirate them if there isn't a substantial demo release so that they might see if it's worth buying, of course though, if you have already pirated it there is no real incentive to buy the real thing. Also, for games as well as music, or just anything that's on a CD, you will probably lose a CD, or it will get scratched at just the right place to screw up the installation, etc. at some point. I know this has happened before to me, and if you've already bought it, why buy it again? Then there are the people who illegally download console games onto their computer to play, which the lack of having that particular console probably contributes to.

There is also the fact that to many people there is the false illusion that pirating just isn't bad. Game developers are letters on a screen to the majority of people who pirate games. There is no guilt, no remorse. We're not hurting anyone because they aren't actually putting in any extra effort to produce that additional game. It's a false belief, but it's an easy one to hold on to.

Finally there is also the easiness, and laziness in not having to go out and buy that music CD, or videogame, which combined with everything else, can cause piracy to become a habit. As one person put it:
Once you start pirating games there's no real incentive to stop. There is no guilt, no real public ridicule, an infinite amount of excuses as to why it doesn't really matter, an endless supply of stories about gaming companies screwing the consumer, and an almost celebrated regard for doing it from anyone below the age of 30. Unless you have a real respect for a company you're likely going to want to try before you buy, and then you'll likely not make the purchase because the minimum standard for purchase becomes ‘exceptional'.

I would have to say that I think monetary/availability (which in many cases can go together) reasons are the main reason things get pirated, with laziness as a close second.

I guess because It's just as bad as stealing ...
Well not really
Yeah i do occasionally pirate dvds mainly new ones when they come out. As for games i don't really because i respect the companies that spend years developing them.

But yeah it is a bad thing to do.
I think that people pirate games because they are either too lazy, the game is old, out-of-date, or virtually forgotten (E.G, no more copies are sold), or they cannot afford the game, therefore they take up pirating the game.
As for me, I've never actually pirated a game ;).
I pirate. I don't pirate a lot of games, but it happens. If I pirate more recent games I've found that I tend to buy them later. Or at least the sequel. It happened when I pirated GTA3 (I bought Vice City), it happened when I pirated Rome: Total War (I had already bought shogun and medieval, but afterwards I bought Medieval 2 as well). I happened when I pirated Democracy 2 (Shame on me, but I bought Kudos 2 a couple of days after it was released. I'm still thinking about buying Democracy 2 eventually).

Generally when it comes to games I buy more than I pirate, mostly because I just don't feel like downloading those huge amounts of gigabytes all games are nowadays. Lately I've found that I don't really want to buy games either because of ALL THAT FUCKING DRM. (Which is why I want to buy Democracy 2 since it's DRM-free and I honestly do feel bad about pirating that one... Strange isn't it. Though I originally pirated it because the demo was too short...)

Then. Music. I don't pirate as much music as I used to. Mostly because I find I have most of the music I want but now I occasionally get myself a track here and there. I also tend to scourge the internet for legal free music that I try to give a listen to from time to time.

However with all this said it's true that I hardly ever pay for music anymore. It's not really that I wouldn't want to but the fact is that I haven't really found any good DRM-free music seller in my region. In our family we have a wide variety of music players and what works in one won't work in another. So it's actually just easier to download the shit illegally.

But yes, when it comes to music I'm a hugely dirty pirate and I need to change my ways.

Then there's movies. It's a bit dual on the movies. I pirate a lot of movies it's true. But I also pay for a lot of movies. Originally my downloading of movies was movies I'd never see otherwise anyway. But lately those films I haven't managed to catch in the cinemas get on my download queue. I have a 100+ DVD collection though and on average I watch at least one film in the cinema each month, so I'm not sure how much part of the problem I am when it comes to the movies.

TV-series I get as soon as they are on torrentsites. I don't live in the US and I want my stuff immediately. I also no longer like to watch stuff on my TV because I've found that whenever there's a commercial break I just shut down the TV and do something else rather than wait it out. The only thing I watch on TV nowadays is sports events and even then it's only on the commercial free government-funded channels.

These were my honest pirate confessions. I don't think my pirating habits are unique in any way. In fact I think they are pretty regular.

Of course I'm also part of the problem because when I buy stuff it's nearly always out of the bargain bin (or pre-owned). Paying those ridiculous full prices for games or movies that's just sick. Unless its something I really want (LOTR extended, Star Wars Box, Vampire: Bloodlines, Empire: Total War (if it doesn't have heavy DRM that is))
I pirate music because CDs and the like are kinda expensive, and a college student like me can't afford to buy much. If I actually want to support a band, I'll buy their album on vynil, or go to see then at a gig.

As for films, I rent the DVD when it comes out and rip it :D so I'm supporting it, but just not as much as other :D

I think the only games I've pirated are abandonware, like others.

I'll state that I pirate games like Chrono Trigger and Mario $ Luigi: Superstar Saga. You know, Gameboy, NES, SNES, etc. For my other emulators, though, I actually go out and buy a disc to rip the iso from. It's easier and works better.

Why NOT pirate stuff?

With the exception of situations where the product is obviously free public domain (like really old games, or songs by long dead musicians) piracy hurts. Professionals rely on money to buy things like food and shelter, much like the rest of us, as we live in what's called a capitalistic society, where people make money for the goods and services they provide. :P
I pirate Sonic the Hedgehog games post-Sonic Adventure so I can rip materials from them, but other than that, anything I pirate is for my own entertainment, and I do it because the option exists.

It's not always completely beneficial. The things I've pirated take up the most space on my computer, so now I'm stuck lingering at around 3 GBs left, and that's after removing all the non-essential, non-pirated stuff.

Not all of us DO live in a capitalist society, for instance I'm in england, which is Democratic (there are a lot of arguments saying that it isn't anymore, but thats a different story). And I would argue that what you describe is much closer to democracy than to capitalism. In a capitalist society such as yours, the whole system is geared hugely towards big companies, which is a good thing in many situations, but once people start pirating from independent american companies (i am assuming you are in america) then you really are damaging them. It doesn't matter if you steal pirate a game like Halo 3, because Microsoft are HUGE they make so much money and will keep doing that no matter how many copies of that game sell. But If you pirate Uplink (made by Introversion) then you are hurting their earnings. For them, every sale matters. I don't think they quit their jobs for a very long time after they released Uplink.

BTW this aint a rant against you, heh. I'm just stating my point and unfortunately using you as a target.

EDIT: Oh wait, uplink is an english company :s my bad. My point remains though.
Capitalism is an economic theory. Democracy is a political theory. I think you are thinking of Socialism (as an economic theory).

I suppose I do, but don't socialism and democracy go hand in hand?
Thinking that a capitalist society does not affect the politics is a bit naive. No offence.
Well, the USA is a democracy, and they're quite capitalist (except for their financial system lol!)

oh ok im sorry i didn't know :S I always thought USA are quite right wing. But... OH I DUNNO!

I don't understand politics that much. I guess I like to pretend I do.

I'm pretty sure my point is still right even if you take out all that capitalism bit.
You can have right wing democracy. Democracy basically only means that the people are allowed to vote and that the leaders are essentially chosen by "the people" (Or, "by the people chosen by the people to choose for them")
