WHAT VIDEOGAMES ARE YOU PLAYING RIGHT NOW?
Posts
dude you gave me a heart attack, i had to go google to make sure it wasn't set to permanent ai like p3/dq4.
(i just bought a persona 5 and a used playstation 3, but the tv won't arrive until friday. and apparently i need to get an hdmi cable? consoles are such fucking peasantry)
edit: why did my post half-jokingly complaining about peasantry have to snipe red's actual worthwhile post? sorry guys
nier's fucking great still btw, 33 hours in and i beat the prologue!!!

author=Red_NovaI feel you, man. I'm loving P5 and all, but it seems like for every quality-of-life improvement they added, they added two more bullshit "features." Like the hiding system sounds cool on paper, but the camera locks up whenever you're hiding, and for some reason, they made the controls for changing hiding places the same as the controls for step out of hiding. The only times I have ever failed an ambush have been when I accidentally stepped out of hiding when I meant to move.
I dropped the anime 2 episodes in since not even ufotable's beautiful animation could save such an uninspired story, so take that for what you will. I'm curious as to how they tied Berseria in with it, but I played Berseria instead of watching Zestiria, so I forgot the anime even existed.
In other news, Persona 5 is still awesome. I love all the small, but highly appreciated tweaks to the battle system. It feels a lot more fluid and-
Game Over.
... Except for that one annoying feature where you instantly lose if the MC is dead. It sucked in P3, it REALLY sucked in P4 since you could take control of your party and use a revival item, and it REALLY REALLY sucks here since your A.I. allies immediately use a revival item when anyone else in your party goes down, so why not the MC?
Well, at least you can save anywhere in the city?
Also, the fact that they still haven't killed off Hama and Mudo when it's game over on MC death boggles my mind. Get ambushed by multiple enemies who can cast instant-death moves? Might as well just reload.
EDIT @ Craze: I loved everything to do with that part. I swear, every five minutes leading up to it, I was yelling at my TV: "what?! you can't do that!"
sail are you talking about ending b or something else? because i mean, it's entirely reasonable to be screaming at this game consistently but i meant that got to ending b.
but i mean the entire game is "YOU CAN'T DO THAT" soooooo
my favorite part of the b run:
my least favorite part was googling how to beat the speed championships 2 and 3!!!

I'm talking about everything post-B and leading up to the end of the prologue, in particular:
Speed Star was terrible, I agree. While some of the sidequests are good, some of them are really annoying and grindy for little narrative or gameplay payoff. Reconnaissance Squad in particular is a huge pain in the ass because you need to grind to find rare enemy spawns.
-Pulling the MGS4 post-credit thing, except there's actually gameplay,
and then it just keeps going.
-The introduction of status effects. I had noticed status effect healing items in shops before but had just tuned them out as noise because I'd never needed them.
It never occurred to me that they had just never been introduced yet.
-The IFF becoming relevant.
-Switching back and forth between 2B/9S.
-Everything with the Bunker, and then, you know, just like everything after that.
and then it just keeps going.

I don't know anything about this game, so I'm going to bullshit and say "the MC is deathly allergic to the revival items".
I wonder if there's a game out there that actually has something like that as a canon explanation?
It's been a bit since I've played a game consistently. I played up until the final book of Odin Sphere Lieterhosen, but after seeing how much health the bosses have in that I put it down. I'll probably just watch the ending on YT or something. I mean, I guess I could take the difficulty off of Hard and such, but, I mean, I just got really tired of hitting the Square button. It's a crying shame how braindead that game's combat is. From what I've heard about the original, it seems they've over-compensated.
Oh yeah, I think I was playing Toki Tori, the Wii U version. Hot damn that's a good game! I'm thinking it'll be up there with Lup*Salad and Sutte Hakkun for my personal list of S-Tier puzzle games. I should get back to that - I think I've taken enough time off of it for my brain cells to recover.

Yeah I should have clarified that. I explore dungeons with my partners set to Act Freely, but take direct command of them for boss fights.

Yeah, hiding is turning out to be pretty finicky. 99% of my problems would be solved if they had mapped the hide command to something other than X. As it is, I either open chests or whiff swipes at enemies when I'm trying to take cover. Good news is that it's literally impossible to be found when hiding. Sentries can walk right through you and you won't be caught, so yay?

So much this. When you level up to the mid 20s, fuse Isis and keep her equipped while exploring Palaces. She nullifies Hama and Mudo, so that problem solves itself. Still no excuse for having them in the first place, but a band-aid over a problem is better than leaving it exposed.
If there's one real gripe I have with the game right so far, it's Morgana erratic curfews. Very often I'll want to go out and explore the city at night, but Morgana's just like "Let's not do that today," without much reasoning. I just went through a sequence of unexpected cutscenes that took over 5 days. These scenes ate up my day hours, but I wasn't allowed to do anything at night.
Too exhausted from exploring the Palace to go out? Totally understandable. Keeping me from ranking up Confidant levels? Annoying, but I can roll with it. Refusing to let me craft tools or brew coffee, tasks that don't require even leaving my home? That's when I call BS.

I FUCKING LOVE TOKI TORI
I AM SO GLAD I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE TO PLAY IT
Toki Tori 2 is pretty different though, just so you know. It's a metroidvania instead of a level-based tool puzzle.
You mentioning it in a puzzle thread some time ago is why I considered checking it out! ;)
And yeah, I bought TT2 along with the first and tried it some. It... definitely doesn't seem to be my type of game.

That bothered me a lot at first but it happens so frequently that I'm just used to it at this point. It does get quite excessive at some points, though. I just went through close to two weeks in which I couldn't do anything but save and sleep between cutscenes.
One observation I have about P5 as compared to P3/P4, and one that I surprisingly don't mind, is the increased content gating in Confidants. In P3/P4, I felt like Academics was always the one social stat that mattered except for a few scattered events that you wanted to level up another stat for, and those tended to be later in the game. In P5, I find myself constantly needing to re-prioritize my social stats, and because of that they feel a lot more balanced.

Oh my God yes this is so annoying. Even freaking Teddie didn't micromanage every single aspect of my life smh
On the bright side, I've seen some excellent memes around Morgana on Twitter, so there's that
i'm really hoping that i can change sakura's stance on preventing rape being an "adult thing"

Just booted up DOOM. It is fantastic.
Follows the Doom Marine, Doom Guy, Doomslayer, take your pick, and shoves him into a similar atmosphere of Doom3, without the weak ass jump scares. Instead, you feel bad ass and powerful as hell(heh), while you blast apart demons and zombies alike. Really dig it. The sound track rocks, the visuals are gorey and beautiful, and most importantly, Doom Guy is back! Love it!!!
Also bought Wario Land:SML2 for Gameboy. It's fun! Much more interesting than I thought possible for its age.
Alsoalso, booting up KH1.5/2.5 pack on ps4. It has all the damn KH games on one frigging disc! KH2.8 is sitting on the shelf waiting for me to beat all these games. Hoyeah, feels good to be gaming again!

It is! I have very fond memories of playing that game. The rabbit hat is awesome. And I remember that there are several secret areas and stages to find.

y'all enjoying Persona 5 and I just downloaded Dragon Quest VIII.
Welcome to 2004 or whatevs
Downloaded -> didn't I PHYSICALLY BUY you that game!?
Life's been busy the last couple of months, but, I've managed to squeeze in some Final Fantasy 12 on PS2 emulator. I'm like 20-ish hours in there. I've since added Wild Arms 3 maybe a week-ish ago? On top of that, I've got Final Fantasy 15 on PS4 that was started, like, a few days after WA3. It's like I'm some kind of glutton for punishment.
I should probably pick up Shin Megami Tensei Persona 5 at some point, since all the cool kids are talking about it. It'll be waaaaaaaaaay the hell down the line, though!

I made the mistake of starting various rpg's at once too once. Never again.

Each console, One game -> until it's done. It's the only way.
I've been at the endgame of Yakuza 5 for about two weeks now. I just can't find a night where I'm free, there won't be any distractions, and I'm not feeling sick to actually just go and do the final bosses.
Then when I was piddling around doing other stuff I discovered the wonder of a Link to the Past Randomizer and now I'm playing through that! I watched a few race videos and those taught me a general starting strategy and where treasure troves are and so far it's been a lot of fun. I can't find the boots though so moving is so slow, and the flute was in the pyramid fairy's chamber, I'm lucky crystal 5 & 6 (required to visit the pyramid fairy) were the Eastern Palace and the Palace of Darkness and I got the loot to do both fairly quickly. I'm running out of chests that I know the location of though and I'm still missing a few critical things or just dungeons I don't want to do without magic upgrades or more health (hi Turtle Rock!). The last one I know of is on Death Mountain and if I'm going to do that I might as well try Turtle Rock too...
(poor yakuza 5, I want to finish it before I get to Yakuza Zero too!)
