OUT OF CONTENT - TIME TO RESTART, RIGHT?
Posts
There are many ways the mini-scenarios around the world can play out and affect each other depending on things you do and don't do as well as choices, yeah.
Post-ending game content ALWAYS depress me. Sometimes I like the game so much I don't want to stop after beating the final boss/whatever, but I always regret the decision.
Only exception: pokémon. Pokémon starts after you beat the game.

A game doesn't necessarily have to end when the main storyline does. The focus just has to switch from a narrative-driven experience to a exploration and environmental one. It can have "plot" reasons for happening, but I feel it should be more along the lines of solving problems in the world that are more or less unrelated to the main campaign; ie- side-quests.
"Yay, we just destroyed the uber evil lord who killed my father, and is also responsible for everything bad that happens in this planet! The two main characters got married, had a baby, and live a happy life in the country! Now let's go kill some goblins and level up a bit more"

If the player wants to play more of your game, there should be more game to play.

Chaos I'm not quite sure what your stance has been this entire topic. Can you uh, rephrase? I mean eventually the player is going to run out of shit to do.
My stance has been "all of the things your player has gained are wasted if they have nothing to apply it to".
Ultima Weapon of FF fame is pretty much the antithesis of this stance - you give the the player the ultimate, oh-shit inducing sword... and nothing to use it on? If you could rebattle Omega Weapon with it, then yeah, it'd make sense. Or maybe hunt a bigger homie? Just do something with it.
Why not let players, say, rebattle bosses from earlier in the game, revamped, in some other mode in the postgame? Why not let them NG+ a hardcore mode? Why not do something that puts all of those Excaliburs and Ultimas to good use instead of having nothing to apply them to?
Basically, don't make a player give up all of their rewards and effort just to get more out of your game, and don't give them stuff just to have it sit there. There should always be something worthwhile for the player to use them on.
EDIT: Why can't you re-do that mission instead of having it vanish forever? Even FFTA had tournaments every month with special rules that stayed fresh for a long, long time.

Well, sure. However I said before that given a finite amount of time, I'd prefer if people, especially in this hobby, finish their games first and foremost. I fear that implementing those features would take a lot of time that could be used actually getting the game out there. Once the game is finished from A to Z, everything else is extra. Also like someone said earlier, this is more of an extra credit thing. I've never really heard anyone lament over not having new game pluses and post game content.
I think all chaos is trying to say is there should be some other stuff to do at the end game (some of it repeatable) besides go kill the final boss, not a never-ending cycle of new things to do forever (which is obviously absurd.)
Sounds strange, but if I wanted a player to finish playing I'd rather them finish at 'My Ending' rather than want to just stop when you were bored of the parts at the end.
can people stop saying "I'd rather the game was finished first"
because that is not relevant to this discussion at fucking all
thanks

Just wanted to mention that postgame content is still content. So yes if you run out of content it is time to restart because if you run out that means there is absolutely nothing left. Content is content regardless of where it is placed in the "story".

Yes, this topic is badly misnamed.

Sure it is. How isn't it? When thinking up new features, one must always account for the time it actually takes to do so.
Also, one way to solve that "Ultimate weapon after defeating the strongest optional boss" is to not give that as a prize for beating the strongest optional boss. "Received Omega trophy! It will be displayed in your hero mansion" or something.
I'm a bit of a fan of new game+, but unlike just about everyone else in this topic, I like it to be easy and retain all the stats. Sometimes it's nice to just quickly go through the game and just watch the story again instead of grinding and doing all that stuff. You can always start a completely new game if you wanted that challenge again.

Final Fantasy does this a lot of the time. Your mileage may vary.

Except that never happened before FF12?? Your usual reward was something quirkier (have materia with all the spells in the game, oh and if you haven't beaten Ruby yet these will have legit use too) or, more often, a simple "You are a fucking hero"-trophy.
Yeah...that is right, isn't it? None of the FFs really had a 'get a cool sword/armor/thing with nothing to use it on' scenarios.
Huh. So much for that point, Chaos...

The argument is still valid, and Sol managed to sum it up quite nicely at that.
"Hey, uh, you're wrong becausethis entry in the series(my bad, durp) the example you gave didn't do quite that."
