WAYS TO IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY/MAINTAIN ITS AWESOMENESS.
Posts
I use 'community' rather loosely in this regard; what I really want to say is 'site in general', but since any group of communicating humans for a central purpose is a 'community', it's all semantics.
LISTEN UP SONNY
1. Don't needlessly complain. Pointing out a problem, an issue, or something otherwise unpleasant is okay, but continually railing on and on about it is wasting time.
2. Related to the above, don't complain about a problem if you're not willing to put forth any effort whatsoever into either fixing it, or raising awareness about it. All whiny talk and no action is some punk ass shit.
3. Don't hate. Nobody likes haters.
4. Once again related to above, give credit where it's due. Give good games/games you enjoy the praise they deserve, give good posts the credit they deserve, good users the respect they deserve, so on and so forth. Positive reinforcement breeds positive results.
5. The 'jaded developer/gamer/player/member' thing is kinda played out. NO I AM NOT ADDRESSING ANYONE SPECIFIC. Keep being cool, you know who you guys are. Seriously. I'm actually addressing this towards the community as a whole. Cheer the hell up and be more proactive and optimistic about what you're doing and why you're here, jeez.
Discussion isn't drama! This community is a fun place to be and making games and playing games and talking about both is fun as hell and I wouldn't be here if I didn't like doing it! So I think everyone should really appreciate and embrace the kind of place this is, and continually work and help each other out in improving it. I'm not really sure where this topic came from but I want to put it out there; I really like this place and I want it to continue to grow and be awesome. So no matter what your role is and no matter how much time you spend here, turn it into an investment for yourself and everyone else here.

you're like the black uncle i always dreamed of having. the one who would give me positive reinforcement and teach me to be a man, with a firm hand, a proud stance, and a no-bullshit attitude. sort of like Finding Forrester, but with the roles racially reversed.
in other news, i could not have said it better myself! i will also take this opportunity to say something i've said a couple of other times that seems to get glossed over a lot:
if you have a problem with something, contribute to the site and tell people about it in a formal setting.
RMN has all sorts of groovy features like articles, the review system, podcasts, and stuff like the SNEWS and Dudesoft's recent interview series, or whatever he's calling it.
it's great to soapbox on the forums, but your opinions will actually carry some weight (hint- weight helps actually get shit accomplished) if you say it in a formal, well-presented manner.
i saw that we had a new featured game. regardless of what i thought of it, i played and reviewed it. it's troubling to me that mine is the only non-staff review up for it, especially after people seemed to have such strong opinions about it. personally, i didn't like the game. but if you liked the game, why didn't you review it? it looks pretty shitty that the only people who will actually do the work to give back to the site are the people whose job it is to do so. come on guys, you're bigger than that.
speaking up doesn't mean bitching on the forums.

You're right, though. If people have strong opinions about a game then they should write their own reviews instead of bitching about everyone else's.
EDIT:
The 'jaded developer/gamer/player/member' thing is kinda played out.
No it's not!
D:
i just saw your review, F-G. wow, i look pretty nice in contrast! but props for getting your opinion out there in review form!
When I read this topic title I knew it was a Mog topic. Also, I believe it stems from a recent IRC conversation. My response was something like "Improve the site by being a shining example." By which I mean, if you find some shortcomings in the site, get up off your duff and do something to rectify it.
Not enough reviews? Write a review. Not enough completed games? Complete your game. A game isn't getting the recognition it deserves? Write a review/newsletter/record a podcast/vote for it in the misaos/make a TVtropes page for it/interview the developer/a half dozen other things. People don't realize RMVX is awesome? Make an awesome game/tech demo in RMVX. People have a negative attitude? Keep a positive attitude yourself. The titlescreen for Looming Spire is hackneyed and lame? Make a better one. And so on.
blah blah blah actions speak louder than words shit or get off the pot step up your game get off your ass and git 'er done yadda yadda

Agreed.
I can't really say much about this besides the fact that pretty much everybody should read it and take it into consideration. That includes myself as well. I know I frequently get involved in the drama around here but that doesn't mean I like it, and I realize that I need to actually hold my opinions up to something more concrete once in a while. I hate being a whiner, cause I'm certainly not in "Real Life". I don't know where that attitude is coming from sometimes on the forums.
Okay, I write reviews (sometimes), I play games (sometimes), have a games released topic, and am trying to figure out how to make the RM2k3 battle system go faster than a snail's pace. Setting the agility to 999 didn't work.
It looks like setting it around 250 works, so the characters will at least get to attack once per five seconds, rather than 40 seconds. Still seems a bit slow, though. I wonder if there's a patch for that?
V That's different from the usual "use RPG Maker VXP" response, for sure.

from VideoWizardYep! It's called RPG Maker 2000.

In all seriousness, I'm surprised there hasn't been a hack of the engine fixing its slow ATB yet, considering how popular it still is. Or maybe it's just easier to upgrade instead...

Shut the fuck up. This post is not helpful, nor is it doing anything except undermining MOG's good intentions. This is the kind of behavior/attitude that makes me bitch about this site.

I will try to be less of a jerk, and will continue my quests to making this place better by kicking people.
Yeah, you're right, that doesn't help. That's half the reason I posted it. The other half was out of pure snarkiness, which is kinda the point this whole thread exists. o_o
Not to be snarky, but to combat that kind of attitude. It's not easy being an active contributing member, but it's well worth it. I guess it's also important to mention that contributions don't have to be big. Little stuff helps too, though the impact may not be as noticeable.

There's two rules of 2k3 agility: More combatants will slow things down and a larger disparity between combatants agility will slow things down. There is no speed up, only reducing slow down. One extra protip is avoid using large numbers of the same enemy too as same-enemies all use the same ATB and they'll all act as once. It's a far cry from a good solution but when you need fire and all you have is a pair of sticks, well...
Alternatively, Wolfcoder's remaking the engine to play 2k3 games from scratch (or GameoverGames 2k3 speed up hack)

Funny, I'd imagine Emptybrain saying something around these lines when people have complained about their software. You know, broken agillity, variables mysteriously being reset, only being able to use one chipset, reflect tennis freezing the game, etc. Oh no it's not the job of the software vendor to produce good products for their customers, they'd better fix it themselves!

Thank you Tony Hawk.
I agree with the rest of your post though, but I think its too fashionable to hate on gaems these days anywhere. As long as you're providing constructive criticism, your words aren't empty when responding to games.
There's a particular rain cloud on the forum that I heart hating, because its a rain cloud. However, I don't voice my hate, but I dread seeing when the user has posted.

I have a similar mindset you do, although we may or may not be thinking about the same poster.
I think the OP is quite good. I normally devote a lot of time to my own projects/projects that I enjoy playing, but I try to make up for it by helping out in any small way that I can (should the opportunity arises), and by

I think you can set the player agility to 30 and all the monsters to like 10 or something. Go down 5 for slow things and up 5 for fast ones. I haven't tried it in a while but I remember it working.
