A game for 2014 IGMC by Marimo and Caz

TIRAWRMISU IGMC PAGE

“This soufflé has sunk so far, it brought back souvenirs from Atlantis!”

“The sponge is so bad, even the frosting is running from it!”

Dragons were never the best of cooks, despite themselves being baked in the burning core of the planet itself for 30 minutes - and not a second longer - at precisely 6000 degrees (or gas mark 421 to some of you well-seasoned cooks).

Spawned from the mighty oven of the universe, they desire just one thing from this world: cake.

Well, okay – cake and virgins. But mostly cake.

And although they were born as a result of such mighty talent, they are not always so lucky to possess such a skill themselves. This is where the humans come in, for so long as we bake delicious goods for our scaly overlords, our virgins will stay safe and go mostly unconsumed.

Of course, no two dragons are the same, and some can be a little.. greedy.

Atop the tallest mountain of Draigville, in the deepest depths of the ancient catacombs, lives one such dragon: enter Gordon Roarsay. Don't let his sexy accent fool you; this oversized lizard means some pretty spongy business.

He has been quite the terror to Draigville for rather a long time now, and is on the verge of eating even his own kin to satiate his cake-lusting needs. Almost every business in the town has widened its scope to the bakery market – a desperate last resort to save themselves from Roarsay's hunger.

But dragons do make such lousy cooks..

At the well renowned Draigville Bakery on Main Street, Dunkin scrapes together the last of his savings to hire a fancy new chef from a sophisticated pastry school.

But this chef is perhaps not of the calibre Dunkin had expected from such a prestigious establishment..

FLAVOUR
- You can whip up a storm of dragon-themed baked goods to appease the humans, and keep your shop topped up with stock.

- Haggle with your customers over the price of each sale. Keep a balance between your shop's cleanliness and serving customers to earn as much money as possible!

- If I can get it done in time, you will be able to cook each product yourself, and maybe even venture out and collect the ingredients yourself.. but we'll see!

Shops, Maps, New Music!

Hi there, long time no speak! Still hard at work, polishing this thing up!

If you hadn't already seen in the new images for the game, I've been busily sprucing up the Shop part of the game. This is the place where, in the contest build, you could buy extra shelves and extra ingredients. For the time being, you can buy Wardrobe items here as well as ingredients, but at a later point, I plan to add some customisation elements to the game where you can choose how your bakery looks.

Huffy lady is a placeholder until we get an even grumpier merchant!

Also got ourselves a minimap for exploring new areas! You can unlock new places to go such as harvesting areas and minibosses!

And check out the Wardrobe's new music! It's pretty damn sweet!

Right people, we have to start talking about the game over at the contest site too, there's a leader board for most discussions!
It's certainly a solid base. But guess it's not ready to be reviewed anyways?

I don't know what you've planned, but there are a couple of things that could be improved upon. As it's neither fast-paced, nor story driven, nor with a world to explore, a little bit more variety and customization would be awesome. It feels like someone else's shop, not yours.

You earn way too much money later on, especially in comparison to your hygiene rating. Some optional spending options would be neat - even if it's just changing the color of your carpets.
Getting the later shelves does not seem to achieve anything at all, you have the same amount of customers (at least with the first one), and given that you do not have a limit to how much you can store in one, it doesn't give you any real benefit.
A different background music for the open shop would be nice.
We've already covered the time^^ has too little impact on the game.

And lastly .. where do dragons come into play? Aside from the introduction and food names. I love them, but it's a little bit sad that they are more or less obsolete to the actual game when you promote it like that. (you know, was customers and such ..) Of course, there's already a welp in the real thing, eh?

Well, so much from me! But it's not exactly my cup of tea anyways, so take it with a grain of salt ;)

Ahh Kylaila you are awesome, thank you for the detailed feedback!

I will shamefully admit that a lot of balancing issues like too much money, no real point to shelves, etc. is down to my lack of testing it at the end. I had noticed from a couple of people's playthroughs that they were getting ridiculous amounts of cake COUGH NESSIAH COUGH and money.. Carpets and wall colours would be really cute options to put in, yes! I had originally planned to make it so you could expand the size of the building itself, not just buy new shelves, but I sadly had to cut that one.

I also understand that there is not.. a great deal to do in the game, other than collect ingredients, bake ingredients, sell, and it gets incredibly repetitive after even just a few minutes. I find the music probably doesn't help at all, I was starting to feel nauseous from listening to it during development ahaha. If I were to spice it up, I'd definitely put in some new areas, new ingredients, new products to sell (maybe not just cakes!), different minigames for the cooking (not just changing the speed/difficulty of the current one but making new minigames to play for each product).

As for dragons, they are mostly just part of the story premise. There are humans in the town, but the only dragons you'll really see in-game are Dunkin and Roarsay. If I had expanded, I'd have changed the clunky "shop" menu to a full town where you could visit other shops to haggle for ingredients, decorations and what-have-you. There would definitely be a lot more dragon NPCs visible around the town!

For something that's not your cup of tea, you have certainly been very kind and lenient so I thank you for your valuable critique and will certainly take on board what has been brought up! :D

(also was that TWO food puns..?!)
Haha, glad it's useful! I'd like to have reviewed it, but with demos it's a thing for itself. So if you want more naggging and nitpicking, just give me a hollar!
It not being my cup of tea may make it less enjoyable, but far easier to view objectively ;)

And with the music I actually meant to have two tunes, one for your closed shop (the music does fit the preparation I'd say) and one for the open one, to differentiate that a little bit.

So two dragons it is, I would've imagined one barging into the shop one day and demanding a higher quantity of cake, actually, haha.
And on a side note .. the forest to gather ingredients is very cute! I'd dig a game styled like that.

Kudos for the natural pun-throwing! Gordon Roarsay and others have not been overlooked^^
The ideas sound lovely. I admit I didn't really mind that there is no full town - it'd be even fine to just expand that to not-business-related areas as well. Makes it easier to create polished spaces rather than a huge town which tends to get messy easily.
Keep up the good work!
This is a very charming little game with the puns, the intro, forest, cake creatures, and little drawn dragons amid calligraphy. I loved reading the intro text alone! I do wish that the flour and creme came from separate piles or at least an area with a little more sprinting room. It's not played for the deep strategy but for the adorable strangeness.

After I actually beat it, I may do a proper review.

Either it's just me, or customers seem to come in stupid-fast. Though, going from level one to level five in one go (by baking 40-ish Tirawrmisu, then 20-ish Dragonnuts) was probably the cause, and probably didn't help me all that much!

It is a cute game! I got to play it and I have to say it is nice! I was making cakes and customers were buying them and I got rich and then I forgot WHY I was making them and ended up.... having less cakes than I meant to. I was right there by the oven with a ton of ingredients too! ;w;

Overall good job caz/marimo!
Hello hello!! I'm not sure if you guys want a review at this stage so I'll just put my thoughts in the comments!

First, I really enjoyed this game! It's super cute and Aarin is hot, plus the concept itself is so quirky and loveable. I think it's definitely worth the time to play as someone who likes sim games like these!

If you two are planning on reworking this to fix up balancing issues and add more content here are some things I suggest looking into!

--Time: I think this is because of the deadline crunch and not a game bug in itself, but at the dawn of Day 7 while Aarin was out ingredient-hunting he said Dunkin would be back on Day 13. When I got back to the bakery later that day and started cooking, Dunkin visited to whisk me away to the boss battle in the early morning. You two were probably already planning to include more days to do things in a full version anyway, but still ;w;

--Ingredients: I think you may want to put a second ingredient in the sugar pile since that's the only one (I think) that only has one ingredient. Or you may want to expand the Black Forest Cake Forest... er, the forest, so each ingredient has its own pile, I'm not sure. :''D

--Ingredients 2: The cupcake made from the pitcher and strawberry is deliciously OP, where it sells for 1450 easily. Once I got it unlocked I could easily harvest the pitchers and buy strawberries from the shop to get mega profits. I didn't try out the other recipes with rare ingredients because they didn't seem worth the trouble compared to the easy cupcake scheme. To balance this, add another ingredient to the cupcake so that it's harder to make?

--Uses for money: In the current version the main goal is to make a ton of cakes to feed Roarsay, while there's no reason to maintain the shop (other than because you don't want poor Dunkin to go out of business). Maybe you can include an endgame bonus if you collect enough money? For example, hiring people to gather ingredients or bake for you, or even upgrading the stove so that it bakes twice as many cakes for each slider press.

In any case I'd like to say that I really do love this game concept! I'd be really happy to see an expanded version with more time to bake some yummy goods ehehe (❁´▽`❁)

Great job!!
hello, btw great game! just asking though, what font did you use on the main dialogue box? it doesn't quite appear as it is on my downloaded game, it uses the default (VL gothic) font

@Accha - thank you for the feedback! Y-yes most issues are due to deadline crunch.. everything is stupidly overpriced towards the end, and nothing is very well balanced at all. I mostly realised the game was too hard and threw in some duff numbers right before time was up just to make it easy enough to play, but it might have been too much..

I will definitely try to make the ingredient gathering more interesting, and put in some ways to use money when I patch this babbu up!

@Ponkan - thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! As for the font, that is very odd.. The font is called 'Please Write Me A Song' by Vanessa Bays, though that link leads to a mirror because it seems her website is currently down at the time of this post.. It is strange that it would default to VL Gothic though. Does it still look okay like that in the game? :x
sorry for the misunderstanding, the other one works well, the Please Write Me A song font, what i mean is the other font that's been used on the character's dialogues/scripts asides from the PWAS font. it uses the default font on the actual game though it uses a different font on the screenshots. can i know the name of that font? anyway this is just a nitpick, i still loved the game..very much, best of luck on the competition! :)

Pretty sure that's DK Cool Crayon, it's in the font folder of the game.
thank you! all fixed now. unfortunately the font is not on the folder so i have to download a copy of that tff. again, thanks a bunch! :)

Hm that is odd.. the other fonts in the folder were never actually used (I should've removed these, oopsie..), the only one used is PWMAS throughout the whole thing.

Caz, that font in the screenshots for the dialogue looks exactly the same as DKCC and nothing like PWMAS. The lowercase 'l' and 't' gives it away, PWMAS has no arm attached to the stem for l and no terminal on the t, DKCC does and so do the dialogues, look at soufflame and things.

ponkan, maybe it depends on which version of the game you downloaded, I grabbed mine early but my font folder has PWMAS, DKCC, codePro, Scrappy & Sprinklecolours.

Man, that kid that comes to your store all the time is such a little buttmunch. He never seems to have enough money on him to buy anything here and he always wants you to give him some kind of a “hometown discount”. I’d say ban him – BAN HIM, I SAY!!!

I’m enjoying this game thus far, as it does remind me a lot of my older retail working days and how hilarious it was. Although, I don’t think the customers spat on the floors and dumped their trash everywhere as much as they do in this game, lol.

*Morpheus face* What if I told you.. that's not spit..

But I'm glad you're enjoying! :D When I get a couple other things out of the way, I'll be trying to update this game over the next few months. I've already got a lot planned based on the feedback I've received, so thanks a bunch everyone. I'mma try to make it better~

On a lesser note, I’m completely finished with the game now and have submitted a wacky review for it! So, like it or not, expect a bit of a boost in your's and marimo’s makerscore within time, you lucky, SOB’s! :D

Ooohhh I am so excite for review, I can't wait!

So excite in fact that I withdraw the Morpheus-ing! It IS spit~!
I CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY THIS GAME AGAIN
PLEASE LET ME DRESS AARIN IN THE MOST RIDICULOUS CLOTHES

I like how you're even going to add effects to the outfits bahaha I look forward to "extremely likely for customers to leave unhappy and possibly terrified"

Also, the graphics overhaul looks amazing! Do you think you might make this commercial? Or donate-able? There's obviously tons of work being put into this, and I'd love to support you guys somehow.
