About
Black Crystals is a hand drawn RPG with colorful characters, a versatile battle system with a few twists, detailed and interactive environments, and an engaging story about friendship, family, and a journey to make a wish come true.

The Story So Far
Starsio, a mild mannered occasionally sarcastic street performer, finds himself in the stickiest of situations. Starsio was kidnapped off the streets of his home town and brought to the raunchy brothel Paprika where he is forced to become a “performer”. One rainy night, Starsio gathers his courage and wits and plans an escape. He convinces Arthur, an apprehensive and fidgety new found friend, to accompany him. Starsio sets his escape plan in motion with one last song.

Features
As Black Crystals is still in development features will be revealed as their implementation is completed.

Battle Features

Interact and Talk – Conclude a battle without the need to fight. Interact with your environment and devise an escape route.

Skill Potential - Learn new skills by using skills. Each skill holds the potential to learn much more powerful ones. Its up to you how your party evolves.

Spontaneous Learning – New skills are learned and unleashed in the middle of combat.

Jigsaw Chain Coop – Each skill contains a jigsaw imprint. Executing skills with compatible imprints in order will unleash a coop skill.

State of Mind (SOM) – Characters gain Flourish and Destruct SOMs throughout the game. These SOMs impact the character's effectiveness in combat and provide insight on their personalities and thoughts

Scenes and How I Animate Them

I might have mentioned this before, but in Black Crystals there are a good number of scenes where the characters interact with one another via animated events. Here's a bit of two of the completed scenes.

Making these has been very time consuming but I think is a good alternative to using large portraits. It makes use of the larger than normal sprites as well.

This tutorial is for RPG Maker MV, since that is the software I am using, however I believe the concept should be the same in other RPG makers.

I’m going to work on a clip from the fountain scene! In particular we’ll look at Starsio’s animation.

First off, the scene animation relies on a particular set of commands, in the Set Movement Route page:

econd off, the animation frames for non-walking animations must be located on the first cell of every row in the sprite sheets.

Now, for Starsio, his animation is contained in three sprite sheets. I basically alternate between the Turn commands, Wait Command and Change Image so as to show a continuous flow of frames. Like this:

This is how a sample code looks like, here you can see that between the Turn commands, I place Wait commands to pace the frames transitions, and then I Change Image to switch the sprite sheets.

Final Tip - In RPG Maker MV, when you use Change Image, the new sprite sheet starts at the same location the old sprite sheet stops, so if your sprite sheet is at the Turn Left cell, and you Change Image, the new sprite will be at the Turn Left cell as well. You will need to pay attention to this when planning your scene animations.

I hope this tutorial/blog post thingie was helpful and gave you ideas on how to make your scenes in RPG Maker :) If you have questions about any specifics please let me know!

Looks interesting. The combat seems pretty unique, which is hard to pull off in turn based games. Best of luck with this!
Been following this for a while. I also hear the musician is a cool guy.

Thank you! I've updated the anticipated release date!
Those animations are slick. I would actually play this(I'm a jaded old fogey that doesn't play games anymore)
The chaining of different moves together reminds me a lot of Legend of Legaia! And I loved that game so that's definitely a good thing |D

also I'm still jealous of your animating skills waaah

I love Legend of Legaia!!!!! To be honest it wasn't on my mind when I worked on this feature (I based it on Saga Frontier) but now that you mention it I think Vahn Noa and Gala were in my subconscious the entire time!
And Thank you! <3<3<3<3

I'm really interested in seeing how the jigsaw mechanic plays out. Good luck with development!
Man, your animation skills are just so amazing. Goals. The backgrounds are also neat; they kinda have an old-timey feel to them~
