In the year 1691, Dracula's castle has risen to the skies of Transylvania. Simon Belmont, wielder of the Vampire Killer, set on a journey through the halls of the dreaded castle, his objective to destroy it's master.

He succeeds in this task, but, Dracula cursed the warrior with his last breath. This curse not only affects him, but the entire Transylvanian countryside. Now, Simon must find a way to remove the curse.

Notes
As expected of a Castlevanina fan-game, expect the classic action-adventure aspect. However, various RPG aspects will be included, as well as changes to certain game mechanics, to better adapt to the engine and keep the challenge fresh. Such as the ability to maneuver Simon in an attempt to dodge enemies. Note that the area of action is not a traditional 2D plane, but uses a "bird's eye view" that still keeps the feel of a side-scroller.

The second part of the game was re-worked to have a better flow, and be a challenging adventure, yet still keeping with the feel of the world from the original games.

Fixes

Hi.
Made small fixes here and there (keys don't turn into old man anymore lol), cleaned some little bugs and reworked some mechanics that will make the battle system more intuitive and enjoyable (It was really lacking some recoil when the enemy took damage, to give the player some ground).
Also implemented a proper day/night cycle to the Castlevania 2 part of the game, with a small clock showing up on the right corner of the screen.
That's it.

Digging those maps. Downloaded.

Edit: If the game uses all custom resources you should consider making it work without needing to install the RTP.
Looks great. I'll let you know how it plays.
Excited about the perspective change! Downloading it soon enough~

I have had the RPG Maker 2K3 RTP installed for a long time, and did a re-installation to be sure, still cannot start the game.

Kyubey, try downloading Harmony.dll, use winrar to extract the file and place it in Castlevania's game folder,

let us know if this worked.

Didn't work...I've tried redownloading and that didn't help, either. Other RPG Maker 2K3 games work fine for me. It's just this one that doesn't want to start for some reason. I really would like to play it, I'm always up for more Castlevania RPGs. I just can't imagine what's wrong.
The answer is quite simple. Locate the RPG_RT.ini file, open it up in notepad, and add this line at the bottom.

FullPackageFlag=1

I was getting the error myself, and when I added this to the file, it loaded for me. If it crashes because a file is missing, and that file is from the RTP, any player could add the file and continue playing. But...

Richterw, you should update your download to include that line in the .ini file and also ensure that ALL resources are included in the download. If you used even one thing from the RTP, you need to locate it and place it in your game folder. That will make the game self-contained so people won't need the RTP installed, and won't have any issues even if the RTP is installed.

I played the game a bit. While the maps look really cool, the game mechanics are very rough.

When the character walks left in the opening, he's facing left on the next map. I would have him facing right, minor nitpick.

The song doesn't loop right, there is a pause.

I don't see anything happen when I destroy the candles and I don't understand what is happening when I open a chest and there is a person who doesn't do anything when I smack them around.

No visible health meter kinda sucks. Death snuck up on me. Is there any healing? Are there any items at all?

The attacking is basic and I tend to get hit a lot.

Then I died. I don't have time to play it again right now. Just curious, would you be interested in a little bit of help with the game mechanics? Like showing HP and attacking?
^ Thank you very much, that worked! Game is playable now. I'm currently just after the second boss.

I agree with Link's comments. A visible health bar would be nice, and I'm not sure why a random person appears any time I pick up a key.

Also, @Link, destroying candles gives you money. You can buy 2 different food items from a person that you'll find in various places.

I'll work on fixing those problems. Thanks for playing and for the feedback.
Dude, you need to give serious thought to the balance of this game. It's like this.

All of your codes are like 3 pages long. And most of these are variables that you do not need.

No items dropped means you just have the whip. Don't need X Y. In fact, you very much shouldn't have it, because it slows down attacks and screws with the actual range. This is because action events typically gain 1 1/2 (when a creature starts to move in you have a minor window where they don't hit) squares, whereas by xy has a strict location that you can attack from.

I'll explain, you need just a local Parallel process that defines monster HP, and then your monster is a simple one page local that looks like this:
(Collision event, Same Level As Hero)
<>If Action Started
<> (Animation based on facing)
<> (Remove HP per hit)
<> If HP variable is 0
<> (Awards Here then erase event)
End
<> Else
<> (Handle damage)
End

And that's it. No four pages of crap.

No items dropped also means you can't replenish hp without plodding through monster after monster hoping for a merchant (you'll get killed first). I made it to the second part only by avoiding basically half the monsters. The candles dropped all kinds of stuff, but since you have copypasted code, basically all your candles are all the same (dude, this is an action event, the other was a collision event; just add your animation properly maybe using facing, then vary these candles ALOT more). From what I saw, they all give about 5 gold or so. Some could drop items. Also, I don't see why candles fall on two hits. These things I remember being one-hit wonders.

If I gave you an actual review, I'd give you a rating of 1 (I considered, but decided to just keep reviews out of this now). Seems harsh? It's because the game's overcomplication makes it difficult to fix, and the challenge issues are game-breaking.
Start the enemy events and objects over. (1) Make objects one hp, a simple one-page animation + Action event with few variables and mix up items/rewards. (2) Enemies are collision with an If Action Taken/Else mix, and make rewards here more varied too. (3) Randomize more things (drops, damage, etc).

I get what you're saying. This game sure could be improved, but sadly i don't have the time to fix it.
Still, your criticism will be taken into account for the other game that i'm working on right now. You make really good points in here, and i'll keep those in mind, so thank you for taking the time to look into it.
