Crystal King - Aulmar K. Character Reveal

Mirror mirror, on the wall, who's the most handsome orc of them all?

It is no secret (or maybe it was) that there was a final party member in the game. And today is finally the day that I talk about my secretive character I've been developing on the side: Aulmar K.

Who is Aulmar K. you might be asking? Well, he's an orc that you'll meet on the way when his village gets attacked by a Fell creature. He's armed with a crossbow and utilizes 'Sniper' talents in combat. You can think of him as your 'Gun Mage' from FF X-2 to get an idea on what his class is. If it's not clear by his sprite, you can see a red sling on his right arm. I visualized Aulmar as a broken armed warrior that can still fight through sheer grit and bravery.

But that's not the only thing that's interesting about Aulmar. In fact, the one thing you'll notice when you meet him is that he's entirely mute. That's right. He's a silent orc that lacks a voice. To be honest, I was afraid to go this route because I'm not sure how people feel about the silent protagonist trope. It was a risky move but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense to me and why I stuck with it.

You see, Aulmar K. is sort of cursed. According to his biography, he's been bullied by the orcs because of his muteness. He was born quiet all his life. Most of the orcs believe he's an ill omen that has brought nothing but misfortune to their village. In fact, the orcs easily blame Aulmar for the creature attacking their village in the first place, even though he's done nothing wrong! Those orc bastards!

Despite the harsh treatment, he is a down-to-earth orc with a gentle heart. He also likes cookies! In terms of who he'll get along with, he seems to like Azhal and Bhazjadorr a lot but doesn't like Worik very much. First impressions are everything Worik!

The biggest mystery surrounding Aulmar is, what role will he play in the story?

Inspired by my conversations from dasgibtesnet and Kylaila, I like to know what you think of Aulmar K. so far and what his destiny is in relation to the game's motif of curses? How do you think Aulmar K. was cursed? Will he be able to speak at some point? Why does he wear that mask on his face? What kind of special powers does it have? I leave it up to you to theorize his character. I'll be unveiling Reuben Redwing soon as the next character. Until then, Happy National Boss Day everyone!

Sorry I am late with my ideas but i was... distracted. Got a few new books and have spent all my time reading.

Well that is a bomb.
I am interested... how does he communicate with the party if he is mute? Do we know the sign language or is simply a feeling of "he might want to do that or that".

Anyways..... on a less serious note than before he was probably cursed for stealing the cookies of the princess since he liked them so much he thought it would be a worthwhile trade... his eye for some cookies. A truly admireable trait.

Well on a more serious note I think one eye was turned into s crystal.

To make actual guesses I know far to little about the bugger apart from him beeing born mute (how did he survive his childhood if he was as hated and was blamed for every catastrophy? Was there a lack of catastrophes to blame on him? Where his parents royals or otherwise influental people that could keep him alive?). Who trained him? Someone must have taken it upon himself to train him... and he must have been paid well to train the one bringing misfortune, maybe even an outsider... which leads me back to the idea that he is the son of a rich trader or the royals. If my previous ideas where right he might be a key "reagent" to get rid of the curse if the orcs where part of the group casting the curse.... which I kinda doubt. But I wonder why only an eye might have turned into a crystal. And if he was a baby growing up cursed how did it survive if the curse is as deadly as i thought? Might it not work on something basic as I thought Or does he have a different curse alltogether? There is to little to go on to make any worthwhile ideas. Maybe he is a reincarnator and some higher entity sealed his voice and made him unable to learn to write so he cant tell anyone what he knows? Heck its farfetched but it wouldnt surprise me. Anyways maybe give me something more to go on please? =P

Hey, no problem. I got caught up with SC 6 for a while so no rush on the conversation. About how he communicates, I was thinking he could possess Worik so that he could have some sort of medium to talk through. It could set up some hilarious moments given that Worik is the comic relief.

Aulmar isn't exactly to be blamed for every catastrophe. I think it's only recent that they started to blame him for several things such as the war chief's disappearance, Layla getting sick and the river running dry without any evidence to support their reasoning. You know, orcs kinda lack reasoning.

Now that you mention it, there is someone who takes care of him in the village. Her name is Layla, the war chief's daughter. But the war chief does not want Layla to get "too affectionate" with Aulmar due to his curse. If you think about it, the orcs could be jealous of their relationship considering they spend more time together than any other orc in the village. He is the most handsome of the lot and certainly the 'ugly duckling' to orc standards. Or that they're hiding something important to Aulmar that would resent him even further. Ironically, the orcs in the village are so tough against Aulmar, yet they are cowardly in numbers to fend off a Fell creature. And Aulmar was the only one brave enough to fight off the creature despite a broken arm and no voice.

Speaking about training, there was a man who challenged him a long time ago. This would result in Aulmar's arm being broken upon defeat, to which the man replies to him, "You are not ready for me. I don't think you'll ever be ready." Something along those lines to imply that something important went down with Aulmar and this stranger. Can't tell ya who it is but it's just a side detail.

Is the curse deadly? Not at all but the orcs think it is. Maybe his voice isn't just the curse but maybe the eyeball too. I mean, it can detect hostility and can see things ahead of time sort of foresight. Maybe the eye serves as a defense mechanic for self-defense due to how much bullying he's been through. Having a crystal like eye, able to possess things, lacks a human component and is cursed. It awfully sounds too familiar to someone in the game. I don't know who it is but maybe they could be...related?

That's all the details I can provide to you on the surface level because otherwise, I'd be spoiling 95% of the plot revolving around Aulmar. Extra hints will cost ya. =p

P.S. I will add that Aulmar K. has the saddest backstory of them all. It's probably why he's becoming my new favorite character in the story.
Possession? He certainly has interesting abilities, no surprise that the villagers may think of him as a .... hazard. Who would like beeing possessed? I know I would try to resist as much as I could. This reminds me of Damien from Umbral Souls with his puppeteering....not quite a hero ability but I am fine with that.... could really lead to.... interesting situations. Who did he "possess" before? Layla? I kinda doubt that.... anyways this could give him the ability to possess enemies in battle (if you want to do that, you can simply link the ability to an event that gives Aulmar a state that immoblizes him)so that they attack your enemies. Or to rob a shopkeeper... or to do some mischief..... ya know stuff like that.

Interesting..... so Aulmar is pretty much a warrior at least in spirit.... still doesnt explain how he got good at fighting.... (I mean he must be good to defeat the Fell creatures you mentioned if seasoned warriors are to afraid of them.... or maybe the... eye? Maybe the eye is something from an ancestor that shares his knowledge with him... would explain why he might learn stuff in a rather.... unorthodox way compared to "normals".)

To the part of beeing related I am still waiting for the new demo to come out =P But my guess is on the mysterious crystal king. But if the eye is that usefull... is it not more blessing than curse? There is something I am missing.... Or the whole idea why they cursed someone is wrong or maybe he is the wrong recipient. Or there is more than one curse (yes I just read the characters page and got some new ideas) the heartless king has a negative curse, Bhaz was turned into a bugbear, Aulmar has a crystal eye and no voice.... the later has additional abilities to make up for something like that he might not be related at all to the curse or the positive part of the curse, while the middle one might only have gained power thanks to the curse and might be the tool to break the curse for good but... why?.... the former though has a very deadly curse and got screwed over badly...

Might the caster be the "dragon" you hinted at? He might profit from a fair bit of infighting if he isnt all that strong after all... hmmm.... gotta think on that and maybe play the demo if that might help with my confusion =P If he isnt the caster than there is a fair chance he manipulated things into it....

Yeah I think I gotta wait for the demo. There are way to many possible variables and things I dont know to make a somewhat fitting conclusion I am currently grasping at straws and all of them are at best losely tied together.
