Breaking Thoughts by Muffle
Length: ~10 minutes

Breaking Thoughts is another one of the four games released by Muffle within this month, and one of the three I'll be reviewing. It's a short, meta game about, well, breaking thoughts.

Visuals wise, it's just like the other Muffle games. Lot's of Ayene tiles, mixed with some rtp. The mapping is pretty nice as per usual, and there's some impressive visual tricks here and there, such as bad end 1's fake-crash. There isn't much there in the way of music, other than a few meh songs (nothing really stood out) and a monster sound effect that was very annoying when played on loop. My biggest visual gripe would probably be the default blue windowskin (Which I forgot to mention in my other Muffle gam reviews, I think. It's pretty much the same in all of them iirc.) Something more custom would have been nice, but it's not too big of an issue.

What WAS an issue was the gameplay. There isn't much beyond interacting with some objects and button mashing at one point. That wasn't a problem for me - what was a problem was getting the true ending. Muffle herself told me that the true ending was supposed to be hard to get, but you basically have to interact with some objects like four to five times to obtain it, and if it was just two times, it wouldn't be so bad, but in its' current state it's sort of impossible to figure it out without a walkthrough (good thing there's one on the game page!)

Thank you for being silent, non-smelly, and hence not giving yourself away at dinner at Aunt Marie's yesterday.

The story seemed very interesting at first, and the first book you find in one of the bookshelves had me hoping to see some meta stuff at play. Sadly, there wasn't much other than a cool fake-crash once, and an ending with the character talking to you. It's a short game, so I guess it's a bit excusable, but I still would have liked to see more done with it.

My other problem with the story would be that it's, other than the meta stuff, your generic depression story. I can't really say much in the way of this, since it's apparently supposed to be semi-personal, but I still would have liked to see more, especially of the breaking thoughts monster, who was a cool persona that deserved more screentime.

The game was pretty well polished, and I wasn't able to find much in the way of bugs (other than being able to walk on the walls in the final room of the true ending). I guess the biggest issue here would be that some of the dialogue didn't fit in one dialogue box so it was displayed through multiple (this is a huge pet peeve of mine). Instead, I think Muffle should have had every sentence that did not fit on a seperate text box. It would be easier to follow.

I give the game three and a half seductive arabian men out of five.

Thanks, Frogge! ^-^ I'll keep in mind the text box thing for later! I understand the issues with the true ending though I feel it fits this game, but if it's any consolation I don't plan to ever do this on any other game. c:
