So this is a game I made for a project in my Greek mythology class last November. It's pretty bad, but technically it's my first completed game so I figured I'd submit it. I made it in under 24 hours for no reason other than that I'm a horrible procrastinator. Almost of the game's assets were made by me in that 24 hour period (I think the only assets not made by me are the sound effects and the game over screen. I would have made those too but I ran out of time. Also, the font, window skin, overworld theme and ship theme are recycled from earlier projects.)

For those who don't know the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, the story begins with Aegus, the king of Athens, who had been unable to produce an heir. Discouraged, he went to the Oracle of Delphi for advice, who told him: "Do not loosen the bulging mouth of the wineskin until you have reached the height of Athens, lest you die of grief." Aegus did not understand this prophecy and was disappointed. Leaving the Oracle, he went to the house of his nearby friend Pittheus, king of Troezen, and told him of the prophecy. Pittheus understood that the prophecy was a warning that Aegus should not have sex until he reaches Athens; but seeing an opportunity, he decided not to relay this meaning to Aegus. Instead, he got Aegus drunk and offered his daughter, Aethra, to him. Upon regaining his senses Aegus was furious, but there was nothing he could do. His heir would be raised in Troezen instead of Athens. However, before leaving, he buried his sandals and sword under a rock and told Aethra that when their son came of age, he must move the rock and take the sword and sandals to him to claim his birthright.

In time Aethra did bear a son, naming him Theseus. Upon coming of age and learning of his birthright, he moved the rock and took the sword and sandals, setting off for Athens. Along the way he had many adventures and performed many great deeds. However, he did not know the dire situation Athens was in at the time. Minos, king of the neighboring island of Crete, had a wife named Pasiphae who had long ago been cursed by Poseidon to fall in love with a bull. The result of this union was the Minotaur, a horrible beast which was half man, half bull. In order to contain this monstrosity, Minos had the great inventor Daedalus construct an enormous maze under the palace for the Minotaur to live. Daedalus called this maze the Labyrinth. In time it was learned that the only thing the Minotaur would eat was human flesh; if not fed this he became angry and grew impossible to contain. Minos was reduced to feeding his own citizens to the beast. And so, when Minos's son Androgeos was killed in Athens, Minos saw and opportunity. He asked for this in retribution: every year, fourteen youths from Athens must sail to Crete, in order to be cast into the Labyrinth to feed the Minotaur. If the tribute was not met, Minos's fleet would sail to Athens and destroy the city. This is where the game begins, with Theseus approaching Athens, unaware of the dire situation his city is in.

The game is very short, it can be completed in under five minutes. Also, due to being made in such a short amount of time, it's very unpolished. The songs are short and don't loop very well, and several of the art assets are just plain bad (especially the title screen, good lord.) Also, I made the minotaur way too strong. If you don't manage to beat him don't worry about it, all it does is say The End after that.

Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy it!

Edit: I almost forgot, I used Victor Sant's Victor Engine Plugin and his Sfonts plugin. Thanks Victor, your plugins are great!

In all fairness, bird shrapnel isn't as deadly as wood shrapnel

Oh my...! I'd actually considered a game like this recently. While I'm aiming for a sci-fantasy right now, it's awesome to see this. If it worked for Glory of Heracles in Japan (up till the DS game), why not for RPG Maker?

I promised I'd play and review a lot of games before. I still need to, but for what it's worth, this is on the queue. :D

Well, don't get your hopes up. It's only five minutes long and there's only one battle in it. But I do hope you enjoy it!
