PSYCHE Locke is a puzzle game with a story about finding yourself. Since the game is very short, I will try to avoid spoilers regarding the story. The main character (named Locke) is a psyche, meaning he has the ability to merge his soul with that of other NPCs and that's what the Gameplay is all about - believe me, it's a lot of fun. As mentioned above, it's a short game, but therefore it's very polished and fun. If you also consider that this game was created within a short time during a GameJam Event, that is quite remarkable.

As I said before, this game is about controlling as many NPCs as possible to achieve your goals. Doing this, you have a time limit of 30 seconds per merge before you have to return to your own body. Sometimes a bit tight, but always enough to do what you have to.

Before taking possession of your victims souls, you will first find yourself in their so called Mind Palaces, where you can collect information about possible weaknesses, strengths, connections and characteristics of that person. Important texts are displayed in red in this game to make sure the player don't misses any important information. How you can make sense of the usage of another person strongly depends on what kind of person you've possessed. Using a slim person you can squeeze through narrow air ducts. A physically strong person has the ability to push heavy obstacles out of the way. Other NPCs can help you unlocking doors or influencing other people as well. I liked the idea of how some possessed can even use weapons for silent kills, although it often happened that I pressed Q instead of W by mistake and thus broke up the merge in some tricky situations.

Altogether, the level design is oddly satisfying.

However, there are also some things that have struck me that could possibly be done better with some fine tuning. For example, I wondered how these SEELE-soldiers could constantly see me through walls, always caused me to go instant Game Over. Also, if you failed at a puzzle, you have to start the whole stage from the very beginning. This can be annoying as the puzzles are sometimes very long. It should be said that it would be neat if the line of sight of each opponent could be graphically shown. As you have to do some puzzles more often, it would be even better if there was a way to skip that Mind Palace scene to instant-occupy the person's mind. By the way: I was curious to know what this childhood memories door is all about. Unfortunately, I never got into such a room. Maybe I missed something?

To put it briefly to the point: This game is absolutely recommendable! It has its little flaws, but that's no reason why it can't be fun, because - it is. I'll give it 4 stars. Well done!

I'm really, really, really glad to know that you had fun playing the game, TwoFace^^ Thank you for taking your time to write a review for me.

The checkpoint system and the whole "you have to go through the Mind Palace everytime" thing is something that has been criticized a lot.

I'm probably going to make the Mind Palaces skippable, but I dunno about the Checkpoint System. I will study those a bit.

I'm particularly glad you liked the level design. I didn't have the time to work on very complex levels, but I did my best nonetheless. Glad that it shows.

Can I ask you what do you think about the story? D'you feel like it was okay, well told, interesting? No need to go into spoilers (but if you want it's perfectly okay with me. Better to use a "hide" tag, though).

Thank you again, TwoFace.^^

Yeah, sure thing.

Yes, I found the story interesting and well told, though I had hoped that in the end it would become clear who Locke really was in his former life and how he got into this situation. But at the end, he seems to accept that he’ll never know who he actually was.

Aidi was okay as a "tutorial lady," but I didn't understand what her motivation is and what she actually does in Cognitus City. I think I see her as something like "a voice in Locke's head", because she can follow him to Mind Palaces and stuff.

Btw.: I didn’t fully understand the scene in which Locke put off the helmet of this SEELE-soldier. Sure, the scene was meant to point out that these SEELE soldiers have nothing human about them anymore. But this scene started out of nowhere and was just over as fast.

I’ll keep this game in mind as „Matrix ReLocked“. xD

I have to agree with all the points that Tw0Face brought up, the game mechanics of this game are pretty neat and the story is well told.

I can understand your doubts, they are legit. Who Aidi really is, who Locke really is, what it means to be "Yourself", and the whole story of the game... a lot of things are open to interpretation. The game leaves you clues for you to... "intepret".
