Welcome to Anthos City.

A calm and peaceful city, divided in (formerly) nine districts, that despite its noticeable flaws, worked well in harmony.
Then, something changed.
A strange disease called The Silence came to the city, attaching itself to all its citizens.
The disease slowly kills its victims and sometimes transforms them into horrible abominations.
Alongside it, a strange figure arrived with it.
Some people of Anthos have perished from the disease. Others started to praise the strange figure like some sort of god, saying that is a messiah that came to bring the end of everything.
And there are those who got even more miserable fates.

Five years later, everything worsened. One day, all the city became radio-silent. The surrounding communities feared that the city became a ghost town without their knowledge, so lots of people tried to go to the city to investigate. They never returned.

You are The Listener.
Someone who appeared in the right place at the wrong time.
You take a train to Anthos by demand of your superiors at The Department to investigate why the city is not receiving nor giving any signs of life when suddenly something attacked the carriage you're in.
Waking up in the now abandoned and nasty train station, you try to make sense of what happened to you, and what's going on.
There's something by your side. A book with a strange symbol on it.
The book appears to be a diary of some sort. Of someone named "Napoleon".

Now it's up to you to make the best of the situation.
Will you try to save the city? Maybe escape from it?

It's up to you.

All there is to know is that Anthos had seen better days.

The Game.

Dying Cat is a top-down, turned-based, grimdark, neo-noir RPG heavily themed around existentialism, theoretical psychology, nihilism, the philosophy of mind, perception of reality and human misery, taking inspirations from games like Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Yume Nikki, LISA: The Painful RPG, Spec Ops: The Line, Fallout, Bioshock: Infinite, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and many others.

Answering more questions.

Hello.

So, there are some more questions that people asked me about the game, so I'll be answering them now.

Is this a horror game?

I don't think it is by itself, but the game is largely inspired by horror games and it contains horror aspects such as body horror and cosmical horror.
The thing is, I didn't make Dying Cat with the intention of creating a horror game (like Purgatory or Mogeko Castle), but a grimdark roleplaying game that has horror elements in it.

Why it looks like the story changed from the last entries?

Because it has changed.
The original story didn't sit well with the RPG elements that I've planned for it, and lots of game mechanics that were made for that story in mind were severely unfriendly to players, so I changed the story to fit a more RPG perspective.
And I guess it worked.
Maybe I'll reserve that story for another game that isn't an RPG.
But a lot of the original story remains in the new one, so it isn't entirely new.

Why are you using RTP and assets from Modern City?

Sadly I don't have any more money to hire someone to make new tilesets and character sprites for the game, so I'll do what I can with what I have.
I'm doing custom sprites and battlers by myself, but I'm not a good spriter nor an actual artist.
That's one of the reasons the game won't go full nuts with horror, otherwise, I'll just make a fool of myself.

How's the game doing? Any estimates?

The game's doing fine. Slowly, but fine.
I don't believe I'll release it anytime soon, but I'll try to keep you guys informed about its status.

Is there a way to contact you or have more news on the game?

Why yes, you can actually hop on the game's new Discord server, Tales from Anthos City.
There you can make questions and talk to me directly since I'm more prone to use Discord than having to look on every single page my game has. And I answer faster too.
You can also email me at carlosdavilla999@gmail.com, but I doubt anyone would do that these days.

Haha, I'm glad I made you happy. Seriously though, it looks pretty good. Keep up the good work!
I enjoyed listening to the soundtrack on your itch.io page. The character designs look professional, too.

I wish you luck on this game!

Below the four screenshots, there are the game details (developer, engine, genre...), right? If in between the game details and screenshots aren't the words Hiatus or Cancelled, then you know that the game is probably still in production.
