A Game About A Genderbend Guy Saving The World

My playtime: 07:03:33 (based on in game clock before the final area).

Intro
The New Earth is a game about a boy turned into a girl who has to party up with a catgirl, martial arts master, and an angel in order to stop a fallen angel that tries to destroy the earth.

Music
To be honest, the music is one of the best parts in the game. There are a lot of music in the game that i find enjoyable.

Graphics
I don't really have any problem with the area's mappings, but i think it still needs improvement since the area looks lazily done (especially the last town). The screen transition when you're going between places also needs to be made slower to make you feel like actually moving.

The level design is horrible though. There are 4 dungeons that i encountered on the game (apart from the forest that the main character was in on the first time). The first dungeon is just too obvious on the chest placement and there are also a lot of places that are just too big. The second dungeon looks like a lot of work but sometimes it's just annoying since you have to take a long walk instead of just finishing the dungeon (I like the concept though). The third dungeon is just.. a very long walk (that might take 30 minutes+ to finish) without any branching path or whatsoever. It just seems as if the developer got burned out designing the second dungeon and just putting anything available for the third one. And lastly, i'm not sure why the developer puts a dungeon with invisible paths that leads to a game over screen on some of the dead ends in the last dungeon.

Story
Just as i said before, the game's story is about a boy who turned into a girl who have to party with a catgirl, a martial art master, and an angel in order to fulfill the prophecy in beating a fallen angel that tries to destroy the earth. To be honest, i hardly can remember the story at all since the writing gives me a headache; i can't even understand what they are talking about most of the times, especially when the story is focused on the villain side. However, i find that some moment (that is related to the main party) to be funny.

Also, the intro text is also somehow hard to read.

Can you tell me what is the text written over there?

The game
To be honest, i don't know what to do for a moment after i pressed the new game button since it only shows the option menu. I tried to press enter and z but it doesn't work. Strangely, it works with x button (which i figured out how it works after a few random button press). The option menu's font is actually great though. I'm not sure why the game doesn't use that font instead.

The game is very hard at the beginning; you'll die a lot because the enemy hits you very hard while you can only attack once every two turns (because of the weird "Wait" status). Saving and loading becomes my friend on the first few hour of the game just to survive the first area, only to be butchered by the enemy on the overworld after that. To be honest, i didn't really enjoy the game at the first, although i somehow find it tolerable after it becomes easier (since i can just play it while playing other games). The game becomes easier after you finish the first area and buy an item in the first town (Sprint Shoes). The enemies become more difficult (again) in the last dungeon though. Luckily, one of the party member has an instant kill skill that can kill the enemy faster than you kill it normally (which i find it weird). The enemies in the last dungeon also gives a lot of exp. I even got the level maxed out quite fast after getting lost a lot of times for exploring the big dungeon.

There are seasons in the game that only gives the map a special effect and a popup indicating the season. I find it to be useless and somehow irritating though since the special effect tend to make the area to be hard to see and the popup sometimes shows on the weird place. There's even a time when the popup shows as someone's dialogue since it happened to pop out when someone was talking.

I hardly can see anything!

This game relies a lot on the character's skills. You'll mostly cast your spells since you won't be running out of MP for casting them (except for the last party member which somehow don't regenerate any MP), even to normal enemies. You can even kill most of them in 1-2 turns (except for the enemies in the last dungeon). As for the bosses, well.. let's just say that they're not different from normal enemies except for the fact that they can summon minions (that can be killed in 1-2 turns) and has higher HP than normal enemies. Sadly, even if you use skills a lot, some skills have unclear description so you have to either guess or try it first (it's also happening on item descriptions by the way).

In this game, you can't just save from the menu. Instead, you have to catch a fairy that is roaming in the area (if there's any). However, there are also traps that look like the fairy that will give you an instant death after you touch it. Luckily, you won't need the fairies to save in the last dungeon.

Speaking of instant death, there are also a lot of choices that can lead you to instant death in the game, even by talking. There are several times where you have to reset the game on the second dungeon if you're going to the wrong place. You also have to blindly guess where is the "instant kill" spot in the last dungeon is in order to traverse through it safely.

Reset? Do i need to reset the game?

The game also crashes a lot for unknown reasons. There are times when i crashed at one point and then not having it when i tried it for a second time, and there are times when i crashed several times when i tried it yesterday and not having it when i tried it today, and so on. Also, although it didn't happen that often, there were also some occasions when the game just crashed when i was on a battle.

Lastly, the game just feels.. empty to me. You'll talk to people, go to dungeon, go to the next area, and so on. There's nothing that connects them and you can't feel any sort of attachment to the people. Even the ending just seems like too many character developments and story happening all at once to me.

Pros:
- 4 dungeons.

Cons:
- Unbalanced difficulties (the game is super hard in the beginning and becomes super easy after that, and then becomes somewhat "hard" at the end).
- Unnecessary "seasons" system.
- Unclear description text.
- You have to catch a fairy just to save the game.
- A lot of instant game over screen.
- Crashes a lot.

Conclusion
You'll need a lot of luck to survive the first area, a lot of time to grind after you see the first town, and then a lot of patience to finish the dungeons (and survive the crashes). All in all, it's not an enjoyable run.

---

Random crashes:
- When you're trying to sneak past the girl on the border (south area after you leave the forest; the place that is leading to the snowy area), the game will return to the main screen with "insufficient memory to create stream." error after the second battle. It doesn't happen again when i try it a second time though so i'm not really sure what triggers it.
-

Talking to this guy crashes the game. He's the guy in the city in the snowy area. I didn't experience it again when i did it later on though.
- When you're fighting the hordes of creatures after talking to Michael, the third fight will return you to the home screen with "Event script referenced a skill that does not exist." error. I think it has something to do with the angel's skill because i also got it when i'm fighting the random enemies in that area after that.
- I crashed when i entered the mountain after getting a boat (with "insufficient memory to create stream" error). I didn't experience it anymore after i reloaded my save though.

Bugs:
- When you exit Michael's home, you will exit from the building on the left side (Ambrosia's home) even though you're entering from the right side.
- When you exit Ambrosia's home, you will exit from the building on the right side (Michael's home) even though you're entering from the left side.
- When you exit from the house north from the inn in the village that you reached after you get a boat, you'll exit from the building on the right side instead.
- When you exit from the house north from the armor shop in the village that you reached after you get a boat, you'll exit from the building on the left side instead.
-

Cropped text.
-

Collision error.
-

You'll fight an enemy for infinite times if you accidentally walk to this spot.

This was a troll game. And yes, I could fix the infinite fights thing (it was mainly a check against boat docking there). But I probly won't.

"Insufficient memory to create stream." Huh? I have been known to do quirky things with patches, but this is a new one.

Those are "clouds" not snow. The idea is you are walking on solid clouds. Lemme look at some of these glitches.

Okay, some of those teleport bugs are intentional (see troll game above). There should actually be more in that area. Cropped text is not, neither is evil game crash man. Not sure about the border girl, as it sounds like a conditional thing. Lemme check around there for any code that doesn't add up.

The options menu can be escaped by hitting Esc. It's a color-menu. The game starts out color-toned horribly, so it should actually screw with your eyes. You can use the cursor keys to adjust stuff like size and color.
To provide a little backstory (that "empty" comment)... The New Earth was originally an RpgMaker 2k3 game that I redid on XP because it seemed to have better graphics. I worked (on and off) for 10 years on the game, but it stunk. Some of that was because the code of XP doesn't work quite like 2k3, and some stuff just failed. See the other reviews.

I got frustrated and killed the game basically, and I'm not sure I know if there's a copy of the XP version in existence. After about 5 years of no game at all, I'm like, "Maybe I could remake the game just on 2k3." I decided against something that sunk 10 years of my life, so I decided to make the game in about 3 weeks or less, and intentionally a little bit horrible. Even three weeks was a bit too long, as I realized how much the whole concept annoyed me, how frustrated I was that I had spent all of this time hoping for a game to be good, and it was awful. So, if it seems like my heart's not in it, it kinda isn't.

I'm gonna fix bugs in one hour, and whatever doesn't get fixed will stay in.

I checked the code for the guy who crashes the game, and there is no discernible reason for it. His code is very simple. I think I must have background code from my patches and plugins that is screwing with stuff in general. One of the plugins does that "skill that does not exist" thing. I've figured out essentially what causes it, it's something like one of the patches creating a glitch where after you get hit (usually in the first few rounds), you have to wait a few seconds before using attacks because it sorta forgets that skill for a second. I could never figure out which patch did it.

I think "insufficient memory to create stream" refers to some kind of memory leak, which could be due to one (or more) patches trying to gobble memory to make pictures or whatever. The other thing it could be, is that with the first one you mentioned, the guard tower, there were like 20 move events happening at once. I stopped that, so it should be good. But the same isn't the case when entering the mountain.

I'm gonna remove some of my patches and see if the game runs better.

to be honest i'm still confused with the "troll" game definition that you meant. if it's meant to be annoying, well i guess that really suits the game perfectly.

just so that we are on the same page.. we are talking about the area that is reached after you pass the guards, right? (the one with the lighthouse in one of the area)

yeah, i didn't notice that (x actually does the same thing as esc) after pressing every button in my keyboard.

well, i know how hard it is to make a game. at least you still manage to finish the game though (and probably gain something from it).

as for the bugs and stuffs, i'm not really sure how to reproduce it as i got it randomly, but yeah, i hope the patches works. thanks for taking your time to fix it btw!

These things? Clouds. Otherwise, maybe snow.

I hope so too. If not, well, I'm kinda burnt out of the game anyway. Since I can't reproduce the bugs, I have no idea how to fix them.

no, i meant the one in the overworld, haha. that pic is actually for the second list.

well, take your time! perhaps replaying the game might help. but again, i won't force you :)
