Falus is a retired Fae looking around in the forest to find a monk he got in contact with in search of a magical item called the Palantir. Falus finds the monk who reveals that there are, in fact, three Palantirs and not just one.

The monk tells Falus that he can only choose one Palantir. Falus picks, and finds himself transported to a new world. But as he escapes, his greed over comes him, and he finds himself looking into the other Palantirs to gain their knowledge too.

But are the Palantirs really as magical as they seem?

The Misadventures of a Fae is a short comedic RPG made for the Swap in the Middle with Two event. The first half of the game was Mirak and the second half was made by Frogge.

Explore three dumb dungeons while you meet a variety of dumb characters and solve some dumb challenges.

Hopefully! Mirak's sense of humour is definetly eons above mine, but I hope my half will at least do it a little justice.

I'm pushing to get a download up by the end of this week before school starts, hopefully. I'm already 50% done so might be a little longer or shorter depending on how much time I spend on polish and how quickly I finish this third dungeon.

Three Palantirs? I think there were at least two in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Could have been more. Can't recall very well any more.

I... kinda doubt if that's the reference this game is going for, though.
It probably is considering the final boss is named Saruman.

Suraman the Beige is not related to Saruman the White like at all guys ffs.

Believe it or not I didn’t catch on the “Suraman the Beige” reference until like two days before the release. So wouldn’t blame you for missing out on it.

I wrote this as I played, sometimes after playing a few segments, and sometimes right after doing something that called my attention.

TO EVERYONE ELSE THERE ARE SPOILERS HERE
I loved the letter sounds, for some reason it really really fits the game. I understand now what you meant about the fixed pixels, both the system and font looks so nice and congruent. I like how the battle screen looks without so much antialias, though idk why it's like a dark shade of blue when the textbox was black. Probably because of the palette you used?

That room with the rolling stones that put you back at the start had a stone at the top with a delay in it's exploding animation and I fell for that trick so many times fghddfs and I also liked that part where the beardragons breathe fire at you, tho I had a bit of difficulty getting back due to the timing on both dragon's fireballs, I had to reload there.

God I'm starting to like this song out of stockholm's syndrome. Fedora was actually a legit useful dude, I don't think I'd have gotten past the five-man pimplegem army. (I wish you could have fixed the scratch on the cat tho, since as it is it doesn't do any extra damage unless it lands a crit.) Chamomile tea says remove "status all effects" i think i screwed up there, and this boss dragon can drain mp but there is no item to refill mp, I'd have loved one in this battle.

Frogge. Why can you sell water bottles for $25, if you bought them for $10. You also sell the chamomile for $10 and it costs $5.

HEY. PIXEL INCONSISTENCY WITH THE ASMR WHISPERY DUDE ONE STAR ONE STAR

Speaking of stars, I loooove the tileset in the last palantir, the starry walls and details on the doorways look so nice.

Frogge this is horrible.

FROGGE THIS IS HARD.

FUCKIN

AAAAAAAAAAA

AAA FINALLY

Yeah, the moving star platforms were a neat idea tho the time to reward ratio of thar $50G chest wasn't worth it. I like what you did with the mechanics of the memories and spirits, they were entertaining to fight.

Oh, so the tech that recovers MP comes until lvl 10.

Oh. You recover a single MP with each use. I guess it's useful in a pinch if you want another swig of the water canteen, but since I was stupidly rich from selling and re-buying water bottles I never used it.

Final boss time! Btw there's a passage mistake before entering the boss room, right at the door, you can walk behind the walls there. I don't know what's the deal with that "takes you to a dark place" skill, it really wrecks my shit. How many freaking times does it hit!?.

I'm not sure why you thought my humor is on a bigger level, you did such a splendid job in making my night. I think I'll have break free in my head for the following three days tho. I also didn't understand the very final scene after the credits, where it pans on the forest. I wonder what that was about.

I enjoyed it a lot Frogge thanks for finishing my half!

OH SHIT DUDE I'm so happy you enjoyed the second half I feel so honored <3 <3 <3

"I like how the battle screen looks without so much antialias, though idk why it's like a dark shade of blue when the textbox was black. Probably because of the palette you used?"

Yeah, that's probably it. I think I accidentally made black the transparency color on some of them so when I changed the color palette it removed black from them automatically, while the windowskin was not actually bound by the palette.

"That room with the rolling stones that put you back at the start had a stone at the top with a delay in it's exploding animation and I fell for that trick so many times fghddfs"

I know, sadly I tried to fix that for a while but couldn't do it. The trick is basically to not step at where the boulders explode until the animation stops playing. It's fairly easy to get through as long as you just do that.

"and I also liked that part where the beardragons breathe fire at you, tho I had a bit of difficulty getting back due to the timing on both dragon's fireballs, I had to reload there."

Not super proud of that room, admitedly. I feel that getting through is too easy and getting back is only hard if you can't time your moves well. Though, by dying, you can actually offset the distance between the fireballs a little bit to make getting through easier. Glad it was fun, though.

"God I'm starting to like this song out of stockholm's syndrome. Fedora was actually a legit useful dude, I don't think I'd have gotten past the five-man pimplegem army."

Yeah, I think I may have made the enemies in the second half of that area (and especially the boss) a little too hard to beat if you don't have Fedora in your party. I doubt the boss is actually even possible unless you grind up to around level 5 or 6 or something without Fedora. Fun fact! I actually used that song because I had it stuck in my head thanks to The Good Place.

"(I wish you could have fixed the scratch on the cat tho, since as it is it doesn't do any extra damage unless it lands a crit.)"

Crap, totally would have if I had noticed. Might fix that in a future update.

"Chamomile tea says remove "status all effects" i think i screwed up there, and this boss dragon can drain mp but there is no item to refill mp, I'd have loved one in this battle."

The reason I had no MP refills up until you get the end game skill was because I wanted MP management to be a part of the challenge so that you would have to use your moves sparingly, same reason why I didn't allow reviving party members in battles. I maybe could have done what I did with the elixir and hid one item in the entire game that can recover MP.

"Frogge. Why can you sell water bottles for $25, if you bought them for $10. You also sell the chamomile for $10 and it costs $5."

Crap, probably an oversight or something I messed up in the game files. Should definetly look into that in a future update.

"HEY. PIXEL INCONSISTENCY WITH THE ASMR WHISPERY DUDE ONE STAR ONE STAR"

I know, I am a horrible person. Fun fact! I was actually going to keep the mode 7 at first but I ended up not being able to find a 4x4 font to use and the 8x8 one caused pixel clash. That's... actually pretty much the biggest reason I got rid of it, among others, of course.

"Speaking of stars, I loooove the tileset in the last palantir, the starry walls and details on the doorways look so nice."

Thank you, I'm glad you do!

"Frogge this is horrible.

Haha, that one's actually my favorite minigame room in the game after the boulder one, probably, because it's like a game of pac man. It's actually not that hard, just gotta make sure you manouver carefully.

"Yeah, the moving star platforms were a neat idea tho the time to reward ratio of thar $50G chest wasn't worth it."

Wait, 50G? Could've sworn I put at least 150 in there. I guess I could replace that with something more useful later.

"I like what you did with the mechanics of the memories and spirits, they were entertaining to fight."

I'm not super sure which mechanic you mean because I just gave them a bunch of random skills with no careful planning, but I'm glad they were!

"Oh, so the tech that recovers MP comes until lvl 10.

Oh. You recover a single MP with each use. I guess it's useful in a pinch if you want another swig of the water canteen, but since I was stupidly rich from selling and re-buying water bottles I never used it."

Looking back I guess it's pretty useless at that point. Unless you grind, you'll probably only get to use it for the final boss. Could also look into buffing it up a little bit, at least.

"Final boss time! Btw there's a passage mistake before entering the boss room, right at the door, you can walk behind the walls there."

Crap, that I should fix.

"I don't know what's the deal with that "takes you to a dark place" skill, it really wrecks my shit. How many freaking times does it hit!?."

It's meant to be the hardest skill in that boss. He's not meant to be able to use it more than once or twice and it's very easy to not take too much damage if you've healed before hand (which you should with the final boss, the main strategy to beating him is keeping your hp as high as possible at all times).

"I'm not sure why you thought my humor is on a bigger level, you did such a splendid job in making my night. I think I'll have break free in my head for the following three days tho."

Dude, are you kidding me? Your half was downright hilarious. I was gonna list here all the lines in your half that I adored, but I realized that would basically be literally every single line of dialogue in the first palantir. I'm so happy that you thought it was funny enough to match you, though!

"I also didn't understand the very final scene after the credits, where it pans on the forest. I wonder what that was about."

It's meant to be a sort of cliche ambigious twist ending, implying that there are real palantirs somewhere out there in the forest.

My god I'm so tempted to tell you what I thought of Half-n-Half Affair but I think my totally secret review that I'm not gonna tell you about so it'll be a surprise should be what you read when it's approved.
Well, I've got my own review in the queue for this game. Though, I think the biggest chunk of that review is dedicated to bug reports.
