Faced with doing probably the tenth Goldilocks or Red Riding Hood story for this event, I decided instead to stretch the limits of what was considered a "fairy tale", using the myth of the world's creation in Shinto lore. It isn't quite a once upon a time story since there are references to some racy topics, but I tried to keep it PG-rated.
This is the story of Izanagi (male) and Izanami (female). The story originally goes like this (from TvTropes):

In the beginning, there was darkness, stars, and an endless ocean. Amongst the first gods born were two siblings named Izanagi-no-Mikoto (male) and Izanami-no-Mikoto (female). They came down from heaven and created the first land by stirring the ocean with a spear, and after that, they built a house, got married, and made some babies. The first of these babies was the malformed fishing god. The next eight were the islands of Japan. They had many more children; however, Izanami died giving birth to the god of fire, Kagutsuchi and was sent to the underworld. Izanagi missed his wife and traveled there to retrieve her, to which she agreed on the condition that her husband was not to look at her until they reached the surface. Of course, he looked anyway and saw that she was now a ghastly, rotting corpse. Izanagi freaked out and ran away, rolling a boulder in front of the entrance in order to escape Izanami's wrath. Izanami promised that she would kill 1,000 people every day in revenge. Izanagi countered that he would create 1,500 people every day. And that was the end of their marriage.

Played a bit of this, and then got stuck in the large area with the poisonous spiders without any idea where to go.
It's not horrible, but has a few major flaws that would be worth looking at. The mapping in particular really isn't very good, and large open areas without anything interesting in them really isn't all that fun to explore, just tedius. I also ran into a lot of passability issues, most notably behind the trees when you can't move sideways sometimes for some reason.

Okay, you're supposed to push the stone. There are two endings, depending on how you push the stone .
The big map is mainly for extra grinding, and I probably could stand to add more enemies and stuff. You're probably playing the earlier copy, as the second one points out that you went too far (vaguely). It also has more of an impact from grind (provided you rest at the house).
I'm gonna see if I can improve some issues. Then I'll release version 3. And yes, the scenery is dull. But remember the origin story. The land is kinda freshly created and there are no other people to speak of. That doesn't give me much to use.

Trees exist in that world from what you've show, and I'm sure cliffs probably should too. There's plenty you can do with just that besides empty areas of grass. Maybe some subtle details such as flowers, bushes, or just little patches of taller grass.

Actually, it's a Japan chipset. It has very little in the way of cliffs. I has alot of town stuff like pickled fish or jars or samurai gear, but little in the way of anything but straight up farms, trees, and coastline. It's a large island, and kinda flat. And I'm using one tree type as a peach tree. It does have rocks and rivers. I'll see about mixing stuff up.
Come to think of it, there are some deities born to the main characters, I could add a few NPCs.
Alright, I've got a few NPCs, mapping is a little better in some areas (that big map is kinda hard to manage, but it's a least a bit more mixed). I'm gonna do a walkthrough to make sure I'm not crossing water or stuff, then upload. Looks good. I'll update pretty soon.

Interesting! I've always loved the Japanese folk-lore xD Not to mention I came to love Izanami's character more because of *cough*Smite*cough* ;) XDD
