"This is good...I think." ★★★★★ - hbgames.org (2021)

"Well Seymour, I made it, despite your directions"

I saw a bunch of rpgmaker games based on the Steamed Hams meme,
and was bummed that none of those games used footage from
the show... so I decided to take a shot at it.

"Steamed Hams, but it's an rpgmaker2003 game" is a tech demo that utilizes:
Cherry's new picture-in-battles feature
hedge1's spritesheet creator (revised/updated this method)
and converted videos with methods used from the rpgmaker2003 video thread.

Download now available

If you liked what you played, Be sure to nominate/vote on this tech demo demo during the 2019 Misao awards for:
"Punniest Game Alive"
"Lawsuit Waiting to Happen" Award
"Trippiest Game"
The "How the Hell Did They Do That?" Award
"Best Game Title"

EDIT: Honestly, this game works better as a video, but I thought I'd upload it anyways for those curious.
Please, only play this in window mode/or GDI rendering turned on.

If you wanna see a game that uses the same tech but without the memes.
Please check out SideWinder's Bounty Angel and Psi Dogs: Suns of Antares

For more traditional jrpgs:
please check out IGCM winner LRD's game: Theia - The Crimson Eclipse (Now Avaiable!)
MacBob's game I Want to Bring Her Back to Life but I Don't Know Where to Start
and vistorsfromdream's Shooty and the Catfish (Episode 1 now available)

Also Grimps: a Christmas Puzzle is the Diehard of Arcade Christmas Puzzles!

It's a great time to be an rpgmaker!

Special Thanks to
TheGameArchivist, Darken, anyon175, and Tau. This game was made possible by
using various methods and techniques found in old rpgmaker games from the rpgmakerarchive thread.

When I'm not making silly tech demos, I'm usually playtesting through EASYRPG or archiving them through RMARCHIVE.TK. By contributing to these sites you are ensuring more cool games like this one can be made in the future. So, please check it out RMARCHIVE.TK and EASYRPG.org when you have the chance.

Steamed Hams but it's SilverGunner?

Special thanks to business snek illy for bringing this to my attention.

I don't normally post stuff like this, cause i'm not much of a social media mongel, I have no idea how this works.
This actually happened earlier this year, but I'm posting it now so it won't fade into google search result obscurity.
I've been silvegunner'd:

Special Thanks to Luineny/Lu9. It's actually their work.

Back in 2018 when the Steamed Hams meme was in full swing. I was looking over a bunch of steamed ham vids. and I stumbled upon this midi they created. It was brilliant. You got this really great midi track that perfectly encapsulates the Skinner & Superintendent theme song in all it's sweet early 2000-ish internet rm2k3 soundtrack glory. But after watching a bunch of rpgmaker steamed ham rpgmaker games on youtube, it made me kind of angry no one was using it? Like, no one was using this in an rpgmaker game, when it should be in an rpgmaker game. How could you not use it? it's perfect! So, like a lot of the stuff that's in SH I decided to steal it/include it.

please check out Lu9's youtube channel and give them..."props"?
look esby, I'm sorry, I don't know what the kids do these days. I'm not "cool" anymore.

But seriously, this was great. Kind of bummed they took down their midi music site cause there was a lot of great stuff on there.
Anyone still creating midi music in 2018 is probably at the top of their craft. No joke.

Thank you Lu9, you're a cool guy! ♥

Yes, this is the pinnacle. This is all that the engine was made for. Time to shut this down.

Turns off the RPG Maker switch.

That's better.

Well done, lordbluerouge. You have definitely created a true masterpiece for the ages. And in a regional dialect, too!

I loved every second of this. It transcends both the source material and the engine while simultaneously embracing and celebrating both. The end result is a unique marriage of Meme and Maker, a sum greater than its parts. Beyond just being a pure joy to play, the game itself is quite a technical achievement. I can't imagine how long it must've taken to sync up the animations with the sound clips and everything.

Bravo!

Thank You narcodis! ♥ This is actually what I had set out to do when I made this and I appreciate that you mentioned this! As I said on discord, it was a lot of fun to make, but it was also a lot of work. But every time I finished off a hard section, I’d go back and play it, laugh at it, and then move onto the next part, which made things easier. XD Thank you for your kind words man! Stuff like this, gives me the courage to do more and be more involved.
Thank You my dude! ♥ This really means a lot.

Demanding next month's game of the month to be this game. Or else I'll sue.

LOL! Thanks for the support J-man!♥ XD!! Naw, I heard the featured game for May was going to Theia, it's very well deserved! A couple of years ago, Blindmind and I had seen it on RMN and was wondering why it wasn't getting more attention. It had sort of slipped under the radar. But now that it's complete and finally in English, it's finally getting the attention that it deserves. Be sure to check out Theia, if you haven't already - This feels like the game we all wanted to make back in 2007, but it's actually finished! It's very well done!

Personally, I'd really like to see OFF finally get featured this year as well!

As for Steamed Hams being a featured game?

Lol, I love the expression on Chalmers face when you’re faced with the dreaded YES or NO options after the whole Aurora Borealis bit that he just looks so…dejected based on Skinner’s answer like he crushed his spirit by telling Chalmers the truth… Too bad it didn’t play this scene (at @ 0:12 below) right before he ultimately rides off into the sunset. I think that would have been a more fitting choice instead of what was used.

But I must say! Out of all the Steamed Hams parodies that I’ve seen, this one definitely ranks up there among the top (IMO) just behind the DK Rap one and the Metal Gear Solid one…especially when it comes to RPGMaker, as I think this one FAR surpasses all the others that were made before it. It really is quite amazing how smooth the animation flows while running the game in real time. And it’s even more amazing if you’ve used RPGMaker 2003 for so long yourself and you see this and you're like, “…How the hell did he do that???” And then you wanna figure out how to do it yourself after that. Well done!

And…yeah, if I had to review this myself, I probably would have given you the same exact score as Frogge did in his review and probably give you a non-rating as well. Because, as a game, there really isn’t that much here that deviates from the meme itself (besides two different endings) that it can be even counted as an actual game. It’s definitely an impressive technical display of what you can do with the techniques listed above, though, so it's got that going for it.

Make me wonder if you're planning on doing something similar again for next year - and what exactly that could be? You've already done Dogs and Hams... What else are you planning???

N…Nah…I’d dunno if I would go down that route myself…maybe as a possible Gamespot for May - or, maybe you could possibly save this for next year’s April Fool’s Day before announcing the actual Featured Game and do something like that! That could totally work!
Thank you Master Addit!♥ Thank you for pointing this out!!

Yeah, you kinda hit the nail on the head here. I hate saying this, cause I don't want people to think differently about the hard work I put into this, But compared to other, Steamed Hams, this one was always kind of plain, straight forward and a bit stiff.

My favorites are the Metal Gear Solid one,(they use stock fmv footage, just like in the game!)
Another, really good one is the All Your Base. (it's very good, it's only 3 minutes long)
However, the one that convinced me, this could be done in rpgmaker2003 was
the Megaman Battle Network one. Because everyime I watched it, I said "hey, that can be done in rpgmaker!"

As you guys probably noticed though, I ran into a lot of road bumps, near the beginning with this, while trying to figure out how to get this to run in rpgmaker2003. You'll notice things became a lot smoother near the end and I started to add small things to sort of spruce it up.

But the hardest scene to pull off in this, was the oven scene and the scene that followed after that. Because the fire battle animation, would be playing at the same time as the clip, and it would just, slow down, everything - so I had to eventually figure out a way. Of how to get those problematic scenes to play right, on the first play through, for everyone.

If I had a chance to go back, I'd probably figure out a way to get unique battle formations down, So I could have added more battle animations to this (Skinner and Chalmers are placed at the very top of each battle so the HP damage can display right). But ya, I'll probably eventually post a blog, listing the stuff I originally wanted to add to this, but couldn't either due to technical limitations or time constraints. But yeah, this was hard at first, but definitely easier over time once I figured it out and I really want to eventually post a very small infograph/tutorial for anyone who wants to try this for themselves. Cause I can't wait to see what others will do with this. The stuff that SideWinder is doing in his games is already pretty exciting!

Having said all that. My favorite moment in this tech demo, is when Chalmers and Skinner both turn to look at the door and the text "Aurora Borealis Approaches" slowly crawls up on the screen, and for a moment it's almost like Skinner is reading the rpgmaker text, that's playing in upper window - like he knows he's in an rpgmaker2003 game - Before turning around and saying what he just read to Chalmers. XDDD

...You got me here! XD I was gonna make a joke about this to Darken - I'm fresh out of ideas! No um, I do have some ideas, but they'll be short, but they probably won't be as funny or as head turning as this one was. After a 3rd of 4th attempt at this, I'll probably go back to making more traditional rpgmaker games. In fact I'm kind of worried of getting DMCA'd. Steamed Hams on youtube was safe, but other stuff like fresh prince of bel-air or fraiser might be a problem.

XD I had this exact same idea. Which Is why I wanted to finish it for the month of April. But yeah, thank you for the kind words and constructive criticism Addit, it really means a lot. Thank You!♥

Yeah, but don’t beat yourself up too much about that. I would imagine that the general objective of making this was to see if something like this could be done and also use it as another teaching tool of what you can do with the listed techniques above and inspire other developers to make a short game like this. Sure, I would have loved an additional boss battle against the true form of Aurora Borealis – but it’s fine the way it is. :)

I’m sure when that time comes you’ll have your next project ready, I’m sure of it! (Although, A Fresh Prince one would be pretty sweet...)

And, yeah, it looks like from the sounds of it that you’ll probably do maybe one more of these and then head back into actual gamemaking again. And as for Youtube and getting DMCA’d? Well, at least you don’t have to worry about that if you post the game up on RMN, or something. (Seriously, Youtube – what the hell?)
An experience most would treasure!

Any chance of a sequel?
For Steamed Hams? probably not. But for other animated shows? Yes absolutely!

I already started working on something in the background, but I probably won't release it until next year.
It probably won't be as funny, meme inspired or draw as much attention as Steamed Hams.
But if you guys like anime and wondered how some would look like in rpgmaker2003, you'll probably like this one.
Thank you flurry!

LOL! Thanks for this! Yeah, the picture-in-battle's feature Cherry made for rpgmaker2003, is a fairly new feature, unfortunately.
I did the same thing you did: awhile back, I tried running this game and other games I've made that use picture-in-battles, through Easyrpg,
just to see if they'd work - Unfortunately, I got the same results as you.

It may take a while, but if this feature ever gets fully incorporated and supported on Easy RPG - I promise, you guys will be the first to know.

Thanks again for the comment, this really made my day.
It made it to the gems showcase. I can partially accept this. Still wanted it to be the game of the month. :P

...No harm in wanting to vote for this game to be in June? :D :D :D

Thanks for the vote of confidence J-man! XD Everytime I get comments like these,
I wanna make 10 more of these short games and go even further with these crazy ideas!

But yeah, as cool as this tech demo is, I don't want it to take away from games with more substance from being featured. Like, ideally it'd be cool if this game were featured on April 2020.(finger's crossed)

However I do want OFF to get featured, this month, or next month. A lot of new and current rpgmakers that are entering the fold now, like bleet (huntress of the hollow), hogwash (lonestar) and rindre (flux, aria's story), have referred to OFF as a source of inspiration at one point or another. I feel like OFF is long overdue for a feature on RMN.

Let nobody tell you that video games can't be art. Aliens will put this in a museum some day.

Hallelujah! The most historically significant achievement in the history of games. (Actually I don't mean to pooh-pooh this game, seems quite impressive.

I didn't know this memed (I mean, I know this meme, 22 short films about Springfield is one of my favorite pieces of television ever, but I didn't know it had gone memetic) and I just watched the Metal Gear Solid one and it was really funny and then about halfway through...

Then I realized that there really actually were lengthy and serious discussions about hamburgers in the latest real Metal Gear Solid game and I facepalmed myself silly. Anyone who has finished Phantom Pain knows what I'm talking about.
