Background
A murderous summoner has emerged and is looking to increase his power, directing his monsters to murder anyone in his way. A young boy stumbles out from the forest, bloody and asking for help. He’s been sent to find a former soldier, disgraced and in self-imposed exile, because she may be the only person who truly understands the danger posed by this new foe and has the capacity to stop him.

Ten years have passed since a community of dead villagers seemed to have risen from the grave, and four years have passed since the failed Rescue at Moranthia. The Shatter Teams have disbanded. Calista Strelley has retired to a peaceful, if not particularly fulfilling, life in the rural hinterlands. The boy seeking her help talks of a powerful summoner, gifted with abilities only matched by those spoken about in rumors and battlefield tales. To stop him, Cal will have to rely on her trusty direwolf companion and her old Shatter Team partner, Garrard Dwirisa. They will be joined on their adventure by two orphans with secrets of their own, as well as a former enemy spy who may be more trouble than she is worth.

Their journey will take them deep into the wilderness of the Kingdom of Laurentide and beyond, searching for knowledge and ancient technology that may hold the key to defeating the mad summoner. All the while, the kingdom’s newly installed king is preparing for an annual celebration and monitoring the emergence of a new, puzzling religion.

This game is the third in a series of At Last Alone adventures. Knowledge of previous events is helpful to fully understand some lore, but is not absolutely necessary.

Game Features:
  • Custom tilesets, sprites, music, conversation busts, animations, menus, and fonts

  • Side-view battle system powered by Battle Symphony

  • Triple Triad minigame

  • Magic QTE system

  • Lockpicking minigame

  • Dungeons with puzzle, stealth, and battle elements

  • Over 100 lovingly created maps

  • Over 400 NPCs sharing game tips, lore, and humor

  • 5+ hour main quest, with 10 optional (but highly encouraged) side quests

  • A script that was at least spell-checked

Praise for At Last Alone: Canyon of Fires

The character writing in particular is stellar, and I am absolutely down to play the next ALA title, I'm just hoping for slightly different mechanics.
-Early Reviewer

I would love to return to this series if you ever make any more of them.
-Youtube LP'er

The writing is superb though btw. Some of the best NPC dialogue out of all RPGs... By god, that ending got me in the feels. The final boss music really amped up like old Final Fantasy Final Boss Themes - starts off slow and almost like a hymn then breaks out into the intense rock! Excellent work, DJBeardo! You are an inspiration!

RTP-less Version

If you'd like to download a RTP-less version to see how some things were done, please click here. Warning: This is version 1.0 and will not be updated. It's stable enough to look at things, but will not be receiving updates based on player input; only the version in the download link above will get all that.

Spoilers and Trigger Warnings
This game was written by an adult and is meant for a more mature audience. If it was a movie, it would be PG-13 maybe? No bewbz or anything, but the game does include discussions about depression and suicide, cannibalism, and child murder.

2019 - "Best of" List!

I want to give TheGamedawg a big thank-you for listing Canyon of Fires in his Top 5 of 2019 list! It's an honor! TheGamedawg has always been a big supporter of my games and it was really a pleasure watching him play through the game earlier in the year. He, and his subscribers, were very complimentary and watching his LP helped make the game even better!

He does a great job giving exposure to RPGMaker devs! Head over to his channel, comment, subscribe, and slap that like button!

Awesome, thanks for your kind words! It's still a little rough around the edges and I'm working on incorporating some early feedback. But I'll PM you when it's getting to a good spot!
Thank you for the good collaboration!!

I hope my music fits good and that your game will get all the love it deserves :)
Your music's awesome! It adds a lot of tension and atmosphere to combat.
Auron has been a dream to work with! I look forward to watching his musical career flourish! I knew him when!
Hello, there's a bug that I've encountered during the prison break part. When the fourth guard comes (during the "joke" session), he gets stuck at one point and this prevents the scene from playing properly, thus preventing the game from progressing.

Oh no! That's terrible!
I have made an update and you can re-download and move your save over. That should fix it for you.
Thanks!
So the timeline of your games goes like this: Risen -> Rescue at Moranthia -> Canyon of Fires? I haven't played the other At Last Alone games, but I'll make sure to do so one day. Anyway, I found a pretty serious bug. Every time I try to view Cal's skills, the game crashes and quits to desktop. Other than that, it seems very promising. You deserve more recognition.

By the way, Cal reminds me of Lady Maria from Bloodborne :)

Thanks for fixing it but now I've encountered another error. After opening the final chest in the Scarlet Cave (after placing the Skull) the game crashes and gives the error below.

Script 'Scriptbox Errors' line 301: SyntaxError occured.

The firm timeline is Risen -> Rescue at Moranthia -> Canyon of Fires. However, they were developed as Rescue at Moranthia -> Risen -> Canyon of Fires. Rescue and Risen can be played in any order. But Rescue was my first game and has very "first game" issues.

As for the crash... I can't recreate this. But I do know that I had an old script that really messed up with the menu. But that's been gone for months. I am curious if other people are having this problem? Which map were you on? Where are you in the game?

Lady Maria: I've never played Bloodborne, but I hear it's badass! Waiting for it to come out for switch... I only have a switch.

Dangit! I thought I found all those. That was an old script call when I thought the game was leaking memory. Found and deleted! Again, a redownload and a move save should do you. Thanks for working through this! You're getting near the end! :D

Yes, finally finished the game without any more problems. Thanks a lot for the quick response. Btw, is the ending hinting at a sequel perhaps?

That's great! I think you may be the first person to get through it!

Yes, I have a rough outline for a sequel. Not sure how long it will take. I have a few other ideas I want to finish before I move on to that.

Nevermind, I reinstalled the game and the bug disappeared. Maybe something went wrong during the extraction. I finished the game satisfied with both the gameplay and the story. I know you said you're on to other things in your Reddit post, but I do sincerely hope for a sequel :)

Got as far as the canyon maze before the game crashed. This game isnt bad but it doesnt seem too polished. The lockpicking gets easily broken for some reason where it just stops responding to inputs after a few picks. Most NPC's dont say anything interesting and can easily block back alleys as they wander around, making town navigation difficult. Direct pressure heals for about 16-30 HP which is pretty much useless. Battles arent too difficult since everyone seems to have high crit rates. However, for some reason alot of enemies early on have counterattack and my party has no magic so there is no way to deal with it other than luck which felt a bit unfair, but it doesnt seem to have a high chance of success so it's not a big deal.

I assume this game is much longer than the other 2 games in this series, so its kinda sad that I ran into so much problems. This game probably needs more polish and bug fixes.

Yeah, there is a major problem with it and I'm not entirely happy with how buggy the fyxinput script made it.

Not sure which build you're playing - but there have been some substantial changes just in the past few weeks. But if you downloaded in the past few days, then things are still broke.

I'm pretty upset with how buggy it got... I really don't know what else to do aside from strip out a bunch of what makes the game even slightly unique.

Maybe it's time for a complete overhaul. :/
