My Computer, a short cyberpunk scenario!

My Computer is a cyberpunk game by coelocanth: we play a Lacuna an operative that has to retrieve a data disc from the mysterious Facility 5. In her quest she’s helped by My Computer, and artificial intelligence that will support her during her mission.

The game wastes no time in introductions and starts directly with our two protagonists teleported inside the Facility 5. Our mission is to guide them inside the complex, to find clues and passwords, fight enemies and stole this data disc. The game consist in exploring this modern dungeon with random battles, learning to use the impressive arsenal that Lacuna owns: besides her katana she has equipped some programs such as one that lets her shoot a laser from her mechanical arm, another that gives her psychic powers and so on. She has also a useful abilities that lets her steal from enemies useful data, passwords and new programs (like the one that summons a support drone), but to use these additional programs it’s necessary to change the setup of her abilities, since you have limited memory slots and they are already all occupied. You can for exchange the laser ability with the support drone, or instead remove one of the memories that give static bonuses to keep both of them, it’s your choice!

Health is completely replenished after each fight and the energy (used to activate attacks like the laser) and the mana (for the psychic powers) slowly recharge automatically, but you can also use some consumables that are found during the exploration of the Facility 5. This is a choice I liked a lot since it makes the game quite simple, and not frustrating at all. I also liked a curious feature, the fact that sometimes My Computer will take control of Lacuna, and choose the next couple of actions: this may seem a strange way to support the operative, but usually these interferences did not matter much as My Computer always chooses the best strategic options.

Combat as an important part of the game, thanks to the frequent random encounters, but thankfully enemies are quite easy to dispatch so fights are usually short and quick. The boss fights are a totally different matter, and while the first one is ok (medium difficulty, and medium length), the last one is really difficult and long, thanks to two incredibly powerful opponents. But it’s ok since it’s at the end of the game.

Take this!!!

Graphically the game is nice, I am not familiar with the resources used but for the most part they are coherent and recreates very well the mysterious rooms and corridors of the Facility 5. There are many little details, I especially liked the animations of some interactions with various items, what I did not like about the graphics is that most enemies feels out of place, not only because they look like they belong to another genre and setting (for example the knights), but also because they are drawn in a different style compared to other characters, such as Lacuna and Magical Girl Aria.

Another minor detail that I did not liked is the loud beeping every time you select an action (instead there is just a little noise when you try to open a closed door without success and no message, so since I kept the volume low due to the loud beeps I had a hard time to figure that.

What else? The adventure is short but pleasant and entertaining, there are some optional places to explore and different endings. I did the secret ending and the roof escape ending, but I guess that there was the possibility to steal a motorbike, unfortunately when I try to use it My Computer keeps mentioning the data disc, even if I had it in my inventory! Weird. Another thing I did not understand is the need of the “prediction power”: this is a mental power that lets you learn the enemy’s future action… by the way this looked like a totally useless power since you will lose your action using it, and then you’ll suffer the enemy action (it’s like predicting that someone will shoot you one second before this happens)... but NO! I was wrong when Coelocanth told me that this lasts the whole combat. Ok it's not an indispensable skill but has clearly its uses,

Verdict
My Computer is a short but interesting and entertaining game with some nice features and few little flaws that do not spoil the fun. As usual I found me wanting for more, since many aspect of the story aren’t fully explained, no matter how many times you play and how much you explore. That’s not a bad thing, but I’d like to see Lacuna and My Computer in other adventures. Even if it’s a just little scenario like this one, just to flesh out the setting and characters that are introduced here.

My Computer is a short and original adventure, a scenario full of details and interesting features. 3/5

I end this review with the little fanart I did for the christmas secret santa. Here you see our two protagonists wandering the Facility 5 corridoors
