Darkness & Demons

Welcome to a real nightmare!
Under the Night (Sa Ilalim ng Gabi ) is an action horror game in which we play as the priestess Liwayway, a servant of the goddess of light, Hanan.
Our heroine is totally alone in her apparently simple task: she has just to light seven lanterns. Too easy? Well, she has to stay alive, and many servants of darkness are hunting her...

Under the Night is an apparently simple game: you run, dodge enemies and try to find these lanterns looking at the various locations on the map. You also have some useful places where you can hide from the pursuers, because our friend Liwayway isn't a warrior at all. And she has just three hitpoints, rapresented by three lanters that are mercifully restored when you light a lamp.
Oh, I forgot to say that the location of the lamps is randomized so you will have to visit the different stations, hoping to find them before the monsters find you, luckily Liwayway is a smart girl and she will mark on the map the locations that you have already visited.

As I said before the game is only apparently easy since we have a lantern that has three different settings: lot of light, dim light, directed light. While the first two are easily understandable, the third is simply the "exploration setting" that points the light in a precise direction to "explore" the surroundings, and as you can expect it is really useful!

Another complexity is that different monsters and demons exist, each one with its particular behaviour and/or weakness, some will kill with just one attacks, others will need three. There are some notes that you can read in the beginning, but do not expect that these will explain everything! Oh and salt is useful against them, if you will be able to collect it!

...Kiss a llama, On the llama, Llama's llama, Tastes of llama, Llama llama ... F**K!!!!

Graphically the game is nothing exceptional but still nice: there ae Rtp and some edits, anyway I liked the particular setting, monsters and also the different costumes! Oh yeah, Liwayway can wear different clothes! But no, this won't save you from the ugly beasts, sorry!

Non, the sounds. I was impressed to hear the main character voiced! Very well, but of course the main sounds that you will hear are those of the monsters and these are all different. The footsteps, the growling sounds... the horror atmosphere is really immersive.

I forgot to say that Under the Night is a Philippine-mythology inspired game, and while I am not an expert of Philippine mythology, I found the various monsters really scary especially because they gave different methods of killing our protagonist. Ok, it's pixelated violence but... still scary! Oh, and if you think that you can do that, play the hard/expert mode!

Verdict
In conclusion Under the Nightis an unusual little horror game. The simple concept is well realized and this is a solid horror game. Unlike other Rmk action horror games I have played, I found this game hard but not unfair, there's always chance to survive. But there are also some surprises, and some aren't pleasant at all, but I won't tell you anything more!

Play it, light those lanterns!
This game earns 4 lanterns out of 5: a scary and nice little horror adventure with a singular setting and situation.

You'd think MZ would use a dictionary for switches/variables by now?

Despite the fact that I am pretty bad at this kind of games, this is a nice little gem and I had really fun with it. Good job!
