A clear artistic vision

This is the second game from Smokingspoon that I've played in the last 24 hours, the first being Dead Again, and I am equally impressed as I was with that game!

Dandelion is another short but sweet experience featuring no combat or really much conventional gameplay to speak of, yet it still manages to be a very enjoyable experience for the time it lasts.

Smokingspoon's original, distinctive pixel art is perfectly suited for the extraterrestrial / existential concept at hand. The color scheme is a neon orange and pure black - it brings to mind the deactivation of HAL scene from 2001: A Space Odyssey, and is fittingly alien. The use of black as the primary color for the ship and use of orange as the primary for the barren planet below is a clever and interesting concept when considering the plot of the game. In addition to the great pixel work, the game also features a few excellent uses of movement and cinematography. The encroaching shadow of your ship as it hovers over the planet-side lifeforms is very well done in particular.

The music utilized in the game is by the inimitable composer Isao Tomita. The analog synthesizer soundscapes lend a fitting atmosphere for the proceedings. Also featured are several "voice" sounds from your ship companions - these slot in with the music in a very natural way. These ring modulated samples are again fitting in creating a succinct atmosphere.

The mood manages to be cute and funny, yet also distinctly existential and detached, simultaneously. It's an interesting vibe and definitely an unusual one for an RPGMaker game. It is also refreshingly subtle with these concepts.

Dandelion is a small yet bold piece of art. It once again shows that a grand scope is not a necessary ingredient for a successful game - when you have a clear vision, and can execute it as excellently as Smokingspoon has here, you can achieve greatness.
