Welcome to the family of adorable reapers

I saw a development blog for this on Tumblr a while back and I don’t remember why I followed it. Maybe it looked cute(which it is). Or I maybe I find reapers cool(which I do). Or maybe I followed it by accident(Which helped me noticed it when I found it on Steam). But I’m always ready for a good Indie RPG or beat the snot of one that just play sucks so lets play.

Story:

Okay. I’m not going to talk about the plot, mainly cause it’s short, free and I’ll most likely give the entire plot away if I talked about it. I’ll just say you’re dead and adorable.

Gameplay:

So that battle system. At first, it seems pretty cool. It’s an ATE styled turn system with a QTE attack and evasion system. But after a while, you notice that their are some issues with this. One of the obvious issues is that that an enemy might attack you as your going through you commands and it gets annoying after a while. Another issue would be hard to notice but I have no idea how long a turn is. This is the most obvious with the Filch move, It’s suppose to stun an opponent for 3 turns and the enemy still attack before I did my move.

I think a fight in dungeon 3 against a Perry and Caroline shows this battle system at it’s worst. In this fight, Perry will protect the both of them so you can’t hurt them and Caroline will steal you’re SP so you won’t have enough points to use that move that ignores defence. I admit, I like that the basic attack giving you SP depending on you timing and the evasion QTE is a good idea, the fact that it’s also a part of this ATE system is just too much to worry about

Now this is where someone would tell me to just use an item to restore my SP and while that would be a good idea, I needed to buy health items more cause aside from a drain attack you don’t have a heal skill so I need every health item I could get. And more importantly, I needed that money to buy skills and stat ups cause if you don’t increase those, you’re going to have a bad time. Sure you just get kick out of the dungeon but still.

Now this might make it sound like I hated this game but I don’t, I just think the flaws are so obvious that they need to be pointed out. As for things I liked. I liked that the lack of healing skills encourages you to use items. You have some good skills like an armour piecing attack, some coloured flames, poison, etc. I like the dungeon designs. And of course there’s the story and presentation.

Also, a few glitches I found. Back tracking through the second dungeon, you can encounter a reaper you already help, even after you beaten that dungeon. And the game doesn’t pause when you’re in the menu so if that’s open and you get into a fight, afterwards the interface would still be visible until you close it. The menu not the game.

Presentation:

At first glance, its a lot of purple and IT’S SO CUTE! And on second glance this kind of reminds me of OFF. Then I noticed little things that point to it being the same engine so that explains it. As for the artwork, have I mentioned how CUTE it is. The sprites are cute. The portraits are cute. Everything taste like purple. No faults on that front. As for the music, I was reminded of both OFF and DOOM. It might have been the instruments used.

Verdict:

The battle system may have issues but it’s short, free and bittersweet.

7/10

This is an issue I'm struggling to fix, unfortunately. :( It seems difficult to be able to make RM2K3 stop showing the menu at the same time as the QTE.

Will work to fix the others bugs and balancing mentioned in this review :) (It's coming along slowly, though).

Thank you for playing, and thank you for leaving a detailed review!
