Sacred Reviews: Owlstanding Delivery

Introduction

"Owlstanding Delivery" is an extremely boring sidescroller developed by JustAShyDoge with the unity engine. And while I'll openly admit that it's easy to understand why this game is so poorly designed. It doesn't make it any less of a chore to get through. I suppose I should just be thankfully that the game is relatively short as well. Since, I don't think I could put up with this game if it was as long as a certain tower defense game on this site.

As for why "Owlstanding Delivery" is such a massive mess upon arrival. The answer to that is pretty simple. This is one of many games that were developed as part of the 48hr Owl Gam Mak Event. An event that gave developers two days to throw together games based around owls. And while the Pokemon parody "Hu'mon" managed to skirt by on the notion of having the goddess of RMN running around and beating all of the other notable members of the community into submission. "Owlstanding Delivery" doesn't have anything like that going for it.

Story

You play as a recent addition to Santa's flying forces. Thankfully your an owl and not a reindeer in this game. Since, the reindeer in said force tend to father children on one night flings and never look back. After all, why would you want to start a family when you can spend all your time carrying Santa's sleigh in preparation for the big night or getting drunk at a bar run by the elves? Instead were a prim and proper owl that delivers presents to all the good little boys and girls around the world that fall outside of Santa's usual range of coverage. Seriously, the dude needs to switch over to a better network, but it's hard to find a phone company willing to service the North Pole.

As for why you joined the forces. I'm guessing Santa picked us up at Diagon Alley. After all, how else would he find owls capable of finding anyone with just a mere street address?

Gameplay

On the gameplay side of things you merely need to remember the five ds of dodgeball in order to conquer this game with easy. So always remember to dodge, duck, dip, dive, and doge. Or in other words fly up and down in order to evade oncoming obstacles. Otherwise you'll loose hit points and eventually drop the present your carrying and will need to start the stage again in order to beat it. Sadly, the game's overall difficulty is highly casual. As such, it's so easy to dodge oncoming obstacles that the game becomes highly monotonous in a hurry.

Sound

The game play some thematically appropriate music in the background. As such, you can expect to hear various Christmas Carols as you dodge around blimps and whatnot. Though I really wish the developer had decided to liven things up a bit by including a few tracks by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra such as "Wizards in Winter" or "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo".

Graphics

While I wouldn't go so far as to say the game is ugly. The overall look of the owls is rather simple. Add in a lack of variety when it comes to the obstacles that get in your way. And your left with a game that isn't all that visually interesting.

Conclusion

While, I'll openly admit that "Owlstanding Delivery" was effectively doomed from the get go. After all, games made under such tight deadlines really need to go for some comedic appeal in my opinion. After all, this is why I enjoyed my initial run through "WWF vs WWF" so much. The mere concept of big hulking wrestlers body slamming porcupines and alligators was initially hilarious.
Sadly, "Owlstanding Delivery" lacks any sort of comedic appeal to help prop it up. As such, I really wouldn't recommend this game to anyone. At the same time, I don't want to give this game a painfully horrible score considering the short amount of time JustAShyDoge had to work on it. As such, I feel comfortable giving this game a 2.5 out of 5 despite it's glaring flaws.

Hello and thanks for the review!

Firstly I'm really sorry the game's idea and the execution did not go as I had planned.
The purpose of the idea was to make a chill game, except as pointed by you, it turned out bland and lack of gameplay. Again, really thank you for pointing out the issues, I promise I'll improve and do better next time.

And to be frankly honest, I am surprised when I saw the notice of your media AND review for this game. I am really grateful for what you are willing to do for this crap game. And even more surprised when you gave it a 2.5 than I had originally expected a 1 or 0.5

Again, I am really grateful and thank you for your time. And...sorry for this crap game XC
For what it's worth, I liked it.
