Sacred Reviews: Hu'mon

Foreword

I suppose it's a bit weird to go back and review a game I played months ago, but I still have notes from back then floating around my computer desk. In fact, I had stuffed them underneath my monitor with rough drafts for "Landy Land" and "Final Quest the Disciple's Journey". Oh well, at least these notes are getting put to use a bit sooner then those. Since I played one of those games well over two or three years ago at this point. Though, I suppose I should stop side tracking about my need to horde notes for projects I should have taken care of a long time ago and get to talking about "Hu'mon".

Intro

"Hu'mon" was developed by Fomar0153 for the year of the owl. An event that was truly a hoot of a good time. Especially if you were looking for a knock off of Pokemon.

A hoot out of ten!

A fact, that even IGN could recognize even if they do work for Team Magma. After all, the internet should never forget those comments about too much water in Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald as far as I'm concerned. That being said, I should probably start talking about the story whose greatest strength was recognized by the Owl Times.

Story

author=Owl Times
Best use of a Snowy Owl since Hedwig from Harry Potter!

After all, every good Pokemon knock off needs a rival whose a total jerk in my opinion. Though, it's always best to take away the ability to name them less the player get highly creative and name them something like asshole or what have you.

Outside of the best use of a Snowy Owl in recent memory. The story largely boils down to the usual quest to be the best there ever was like no ever was before. Of course, the story also contains a few nods to old rumors surrounding the original games.

Gameplay

On the difficulty side of things the game is rather easy if you go out of your way to catch every Hu'mon you can find. After all, who doesn't want a massive roster of units to use. Albeit, I mostly stuck to crushing everyone with the site's princess of choice. After all, if there's one mod to rule them all around here it's definitely Liberty. And while I'd normally find the lack of challenge a disappointment. "Hu'mon" is on the shorter side of things and meant to be more of a joke game then anything else. So, I really can't hold that issue against this game.

On the other hand, I find the touch encounter system rather annoying in certain areas. This is because a lot of the maps contain narrow hallways and encounters kick off as soon as you touch one of the eight tiles around a hu'mon. As such, it can be damn near impossible to avoid fights in certain sections of this game. And if your as massively over leveled as I was at times you really don't want to spend your time on unworthy opponents when your in a hurry to get to the next town.

Outside of my issues with the narrow hallways leading to fights that should have been optional in my opinion. After all, why include touch encounters if your going to funnel the player into fights anyway? At that point you might as well just use random encounters. Since it will achieve the same end and not be as frustrating to the player in my opinion. I feel like the various hu'mons really needed a boost in terms of move sets. After all, the amount of moves your monsters can learn is rather limited. So much so, that the game reminds me more of "Shaman King: Soaring Hawk/Sprinting Wolf" then of Pokemon.

Mapping

Outside of the mapping being rather narrow at points. I also felt the mapping was a bit sloppy. Though, I'm willing to overlook that to a certain extent because of the nature of the game. On the other hand, I'm still scratching my head over why I could pass through a fencing tile in this game. After all, fencing tiles should definitely not be squares I can walk through.

Conclusion

"Hu'mon" is a pretty fun in small doses. Especially if you can never satisfy your itch for games about capturing and raising monsters. And that's definitely an itch I can devote hours to scratching. After all, I've devoted hundreds of hours to Pokemon at this point.

Wow, thanks for the review. I feel like you've been really generous with the score.

To be honest I didn't give maps a second thought given that I had to get everyone done in a weekend.

Being as you liked the Snowy Owl, my original plan was to release two versions (Barn and Snowy) with online trading (I'd successfully made a proof of concept back on VX Ace) but that was something that I just didn't have time for in the end. The Snowy Owl version will sadly have to exist only the game data files much like Pokemon Pink version.
"I feel like you've been really generous with the score."

I suppose, but I really don't consider this a particularly serious game, but a nod to the community. So, I really didn't feel like scoring it like a serious project like "Luxarren Allure" or "Under the Rain".
