The Lost Art of Innkeeping

Available on Itch.io and Steam for US$4.99!

Synopsis

The good news is that you've just inherited Cascade Manor from your eccentric Aunt Agatha. The bad news is that the manor is in a dismal condition and you have no money to pay for repairs and its upkeep. The even worse news is that the bank has given you an ultimatum: pay off the mortgage within the next thirty days, or the bank will seize the manor.

You decide to convert the manor to an inn, but while you’re busy trying to satisfy the needs of your unusual and persnickety guests, you discover that there is more to the manor than meets the eye...

Highlights

  • Explore the manor and its surroundings, and unlock new rooms and discover new areas.
  • Hire an interesting cast of characters to work at your inn.
  • Meet a gaggle of guests, including adventurers, inventors, opera singers, fairies, and many others, all of whom have unique personalities and varied preferences.
  • Complete mini-quests such as hunting down the ghost haunting the manor, finding coal for the blacksmith, restoring an ancient temple, and more!
  • Configure the guest rooms. purchase amenities, and upgrade the manor and nearby village to keep your guests happy.
  • Design advertisements to attract more guests, but be warned, false advertising will not be taken lightly either by the authorities or your visitors!
  • Find items and beautiful paintings that will help you pay off the mortgage and solve the mystery of Aunt Agatha’s puzzling behavior.
  • Replay the game with a New Game+ and discover several exciting new items and guests, and experience different outcomes and multiple endings based on your choices and actions.
  • Unlock achievements, master the art of innkeeping, and become the owner of a 5-star inn that caters even to royalty!

This game is an extension of my Indie Game Maker Contest 2017 game, The Rock and the Rose (which won 2nd prize!), with many more new items, areas, characters and upgrades, additional gameplay elements, a richer storyline, achievements, higher-resolution artwork, and improved pixel art and UI.

Version 1.2 - new upgrades for the garden!

Have you always wanted a gondola for your manor, or well-sculpted bushes in your garden? Or even a poetic sculpture to decorate your lawn? Well, even if you never thought you’d want them, now you can have them! These upgrades are available in late game, when certain conditions are fulfilled, and some very important guests will appreciate your gorgeously upgraded garden!

I also made a few other minor changes, and fixed a couple of bugs and issues.

Both the Steam and Itch.io versions have been updated, and are now on sale for US$4.49 for a limited time (regular price: US$4.99).

Oh, I'm so happy to see this go commercial. I remember judging it during the IGMC and it was such a pleasure to play. One of my favourites to come from that year's IGMC and I loved how you made it work.

I also love the title change. While I liked Rock and Rose for how stand-out it was as a title, I think this is a little more... ingenious.

I'm definitely keeping an eye on this space!
Beautifully clean and streamlined concept, with a mystery as well! Love it.
Maybe too early to ask, but will this game be available on Steam?
Thanks, Liberty and JRibbons, for your support! Also glad to see that there's some love for the new title - it literally took me days of thinking. :)

I hope so... it'll definitely be on Itch, but I'm going to try to put it up on Steam too.
Based on feedback from the first few playtesters, I'm looking to add a couple new guests to the game. I posted a crowdsourcing request on Twitter, but I'd love to hear from forum members too!

Any suggestions for who would visit an inn in the year 1900?

So far I have an adventurer, a writer, inventors, train engineers, fairies, opera singers, a burglar, a mermaid, royalty...

Note: the final decision will depend in large part on my (limited) ability to draw or frankensprite the characters! ;)
Bought the game, played it all day yesterday, managed to keep my inn with a 20% payment plan (just missed out :< )

Loved it. The changes made between the original version and this version really help it shine and I can see the difference. There's a bunch more to do, more places to open and go and more people to kick out of their rooms. Fun was had!

Great job~ >.<)b

Yay! So happy that you had fun, and that you thought the additions were a good improvement! Thanks again for playing the game, and good luck if you replay again. :)

Good to hear that you're enjoying the game!

I'm pretty sure you get only one achievement (not four) if you give Nobby the money without any strings attached and you won't get any more money in return.
