In the ancient days, magic was a myth, a story told to frighten children and fleece fools out of their hard earned silver. Not all stories stay myths forever, though, and the world changed when a new moon appeared in the sky, bringing with it a very real power... and a very real cataclysm. From the ruins of the old orders arose new ones, who struggled against one another until a balance was found. Eventually, peace replaced war, and magic found a place in society outside the dark corners of the land.

Moonsong begins alongside great events which will undoubtedly change the world once more. Take control of a band of outcasts as they struggle to understand their role in the conflict and the scope of the perils which face them. From humble beginnings in the back country of a mighty kingdom, they will embark on an adventure that will take them all across the land- and through no shortage of danger- as they attempt to counter the growing darkness.

I started this project many years ago (perhaps a decade?), but it sat on a shelf for a very long time. Last fall I decided it was time to pick it up and dust it off, and in doing so I found the kernel of a promising project. Unfortunately, I'd done less work than I'd thought, but with my shearing scissors in hand a LOT of elbow grease I've gotten it up to a playable state: certainly worthy of a demo release. I've trimmed out the things that I could never finish, culled the story, and reined in my lofty, impossible ambitions to put together a short, atmospheric quest that I hope you'll all enjoy.

Key features include:
- Choose 3 of 6 characters to form your party.
- Each of the 6 can choose to change class later in the game, offering numerous combinations to suit your playstyle.
- 6 unique skilltrees (one for each character) which let you spend ability points earned from monsters however you like, letting you customize your party.
- A linear story with lots of exploration, with ample treasures to reward perceptive players.
- An interconnected world where every step is shown off in high-detail maps.
- A mix of custom, edited and ripped graphics that all work together to form a cohesive aesthetic.

I hope you'll all enjoy this project from yesteryear: it took a lot of work to revive it, but I think, in the end, you'll agree it was worth it.

Moonsong v1.2 update now ready!

The second update is now here! There should be no save inconsistencies between this update any any older versions of the game so once again you can update the game just by extacting the contents into the same game folder and overriding the old files.

If this is your first time downloading Moonsong, please make sure to install Moonsong.fon, which is located in the main game directory. This is necessary to make the fonts appear normal in game. All you need to do is right click on the file and select install and that's it! Fonts fixed!

Please let me know if you have any problems with old save games!

Fix list:

  • Fixed Aria's scaling (reduced its effect by 1hp per level but correctly scaled to level IV) (thanks to Deckiller)

  • Fixed Quartermaster item rewards for Khalid (if you took the Contender ring in v1.1 it is now a working item)

  • Fixed Quartermaster item rewards for Siegfried.

  • Tweaked AP rewards in certain areas (most notably the blue jellyfishes, Man-o-Wars, now give 1AP. The pink jellyfish, the Man-o-Peace, still gives 2AP).(thanks to Deckiller)

  • Removed a major pathfinding issue on the Merchant's Coast (thanks to Punk_Kricket)

  • Kindle now does a small amount of fire damage in addition to inflicting ignite to better balance Elle's early game skills. Although the damage is low, with multipliers it can be a nice bonus. (thanks to Firefly84)

  • Removed a strange, misplaced testing event in Marahas (thanks to Firefly84)

  • Fixed several small encounter issues (thanks to Firefly84)

  • Corrected several graphical mistakes in the skill trees (thanks to Firefly84)

  • Minor tweaks to some sidequest rewards.

  • Added several crates and barrels scattered around with minor loot inside.

  • Re-added (and tweaked) a very small new area just south of Ebora that had been dummied out.

  • Tweaked some dialogue, especially around Ebora.

  • Changed Elle's starting items (added one Energy potion, removed one health) to give her an easier time in her introductory scenes.

This update fixes all the bugs reported so far, but I'm sure there are still some floating around. If you spot anything (even a typo!), let me know!

Soon! Very soon, hopefully. It needs a lot of polishing, but it's currently playable... although I absolutely just got killed by an overpowered boss in my nth playthrough, so maybe not quite.

Screaming is an acceptable currency.

Haha, the classic feel might come from the fact that I believe I started this way back in 2010 originally before it was relegated to a long hiatus. I hope to resuscitate the glory days, if only for an hour or two.
I know a thing or two about shelving stuff so the only thing I can say, please don't give up, as this looks really promising.

No worry of me giving up! I almost gave up on it a long time ago, but it's back now and very close to completion.
Kaempfer, you sleaze! When did you sneak this onto RMN? I am hugely interested in this. Finish it!
And Evoker too. Slacking will not be tolerated.

=)

It's pretty much already finished, albeit a bit janky. I'm just completing my alpha test and then I'll do a closed alpha and then it'll be released.

Been playing this and encountered a few bugs. Didn't take note of most since they were pretty minor (mostly passability bugs, and I think I broke sequence in the city with the postman sidequest by interacting with the alchemist before getting his package? When I went back to the post office the game said I delivered his package and got attacked but I didn't) but I did just encounter a game breaking bug I figured you might want to know about - in the Marahas where you're supposed to meet up with Giovanni in the south docks, if you talk to the guy in the blue outfit so that he moves out of the way, but then go outside rather than go down the stairs, when you go back in he will be in the hallway and you won't be able to progress because you can't pass through. Figured you might want to know about it.
I'll check it out. Good work.

Yikes! I'm working on a patch, so I'll fix these up and they'll definitely be fixed in the future. Thanks for telling me about it. It seems no matter how much testing, something always slips through (and sometimes it's big!).

Try to reach the center.
The way I did it was going back to the top left corner, and walking down right (one step down, one right approximately) until I found the ruins.

Correct!
I did this, made 20-25 steps south from the cave exit, then go all right (est). You should find a lone rock that is important landmark: if you continue right you will find the oasis, if you go south from the rock you find the ruins.

So the trick is finding the rock (that's in the middle), there is only one!
