Now I fear the shadows...

Hello!
This is my third review of a game of the Repent-Loci game series. This is the third game so far, and it's a bit separated from the others since I did not see a recurring character and location of the past episodes, but maybe someday everything will be clearly explained...
Maybe!

The game is divided in two parts: day and night, and both are set in a school. The first is just a "visual novel" section in which you have to walk and talk, talk and walk. The first thing that surprised me was that there are no more shades to represent the "less important" characters, but maybe this is because the students are all important and know each other and the protagonist, that is one of them. So they are a bit more characterized that other Npcs in this series, for example I liked the funny guy with the sunglasses, but I admit I did not try to talk with everyone...

Here's our alter-ego unnamed student protagonist. He's angry because he has to do everything by himself!

The second part instead is set in a school engulfed in darkness and populated by deadly shadows (this reminded to me the Severed Waters episode, go and play that so you can understand what I mean, it's quite short and easy!). The shadows fears water and this can be used as an advantage, considering that it's also possible to pull chairs and use them as a barrier against these hostile beings. But there are two things to consider: the first is that on water our characters (and chairs too) will slide, and that in order to progress you also need to recover some items that will be used to unlock the doors of the other classrooms (that acts as level and becomes more and more difficult, of course).

The good thing is that you can save anytime during the puzzles, but pay attention because it is possible to be stuck or save a game in a position where you won't have the time to move and you will be istantly killed by the fast black creatures.

Hey! That's the witch... just a last little effort and I will reach her!

Final Verdict
Hm I assumed that this time we do not play as the protagonist unlike the other Repent Loci games, since the girl/witch is the most important character of the game, anyway I liked this game (probably less than "The Orb" but more than "Severed Waters"). Graphically this is nice, the maps are simple but well made and organized and fit the (school) setting appropriately, the portraits of the characters are really good and also the music is very atmospheric.
With the mop bug fixed, the only problem I had with this game were the shadows. In the corridor they were slow and peaceful (even if difficult to see and sometimes I fell directly into them, lol), when I entered the classrooms they become the deadliest and fastest predators ever seen, and being this a sliding puzzle (a kind of game I like!) it was sometimes unfair due to their excessive aggressiveness. Well I admit that it felt like you need a lot of luck and quickness, even if you plan your moves carefully. But since I was able to complete it, probably difficulty is well balanced!

I loved the Orb, but I think this is a matter of personal tastes, this is a worthy episode of the series and an interesting story, a bit different from the other two.
4/5 is clearly deserved, as for the other episodes before.

PS: A problem I found with the version of the game I played was the useless mop! Oh that mythical mop is said that it can be used to dry the puddles... but no, it did not work even if I tried to enter the inventory, press the indicated keys... it was no use, it never worked as intended! Buuut this was not a problem for me, since I was able to complete the game without using the mop (that maybe it would have made the last room too easy to complete), in any case this issue was solved. So I have no typos, bugs, problems or map errors to report. And that's good!

You're quick and steady, that's admirable.

You're right, this episode isn't connected to the others via its characters or location; but there are thematic common points. And you even spotted one when you thought about Severed Waters =D

All the balancing, monster speed and aspects like that have been the fruit of much discussion to be honest. In a way, I'm worried about the reception, but in another, it's also what taught us the most, so... I'm cool with it yknow. Plus, you seem to have enjoyed it in the end.

I'll show that to the others. As always, good job on indeed understanding the game, and thanks for playing~

Well game is short, and this is an aspect I like because playing small episodes do not require a lot of time, they aren't boring and still they contribuite to a larger picture of the setting presenting new situations and characters in a familiar setting.

I know, here it is probably a matter of personal taste: I know that Rmk isn't an engine well suited for action scenes but on the other hand there are many Rmk horror games with chases and similar sections that the series Repent Loci lacked so far. But despite the fact that I am pretty bad (The Orb was longer but easier for me because it left me time to plan my moves) I was able to finish the game without much hassle. So yes, I liked this despite my lack of skill (I admit that I abandoned other similar games before reaching the end, but this was not the case!).

Oh thanks for the reply!
If you managed to get through The Orb, you can't be that bad, really xD. Now that's one game that had people drop it. It's quite interesting that you would say that you found apologies harder, I didn't expect it.
