Christian Horror Story

Inner Sanctum is a horror game starring a young girl named Meadow Springfull, who comes to live with a christian community at a nearby church after her parents are murdered. Well, atleast at first. You will play as multiple characters in this game, guiding their steps and determining their fate. Depending on how you do, you will receive one of four possible endings.

The environments are gorgeous, if you are looking for an example of great usage of RTP resources, this is it. The edited resources also add some unique charm to the game.

The gameplay is mostly a "walking simulator", combined with some choices that determine the fate of the characters. Also a few "chase scenes". There's also one part early on where you have to look for a key, but that's it.

When it comes to the decisions, each character has their strengths and weaknesses, written on a tablet each of them carries in their inventory. The idea is that you will have to guess the correct decisions based on what the character's good at. This isn't hard. In fact, it's probably too trivial. To give an example, a character's tablet might say "he's great at chess, but he can't run very fast" and then you have a choice of challenging someone to either a chess match or a footrace. It's a bit more involved than this, but not that much. Still, it has some nice moments.

For the chase scenes, here's where you are most likely to lose a character. You are locked in a room with a monster and in order to fight back, you have to locate glowing interactable objects in a room and use them. Interacting with said objects damages the monster somehow (even if it's on the other side of the room behind a pillar and the interactable is a huge vase you wouldn't be able to lift and throw at it). After interacting with all of the possible objects, the monster is defeated. I'm not really a huge fan of it, but it works fine. The exception is one of these sequences late in the game, where you are in narrow dark corridors with only a few of these objects visible at the screen at a time and you have to guess where the last one is while the monster is chasing you. That might have been a bit overboard. If you lose all of your HP, that's it for that character and you automatically move on to the next one.

As for the story, it flows well and is generally pretty engaging. The atmosphere is properly conveyed. There a few issues though. For one, while the characters all have different personalities that are conveyed very well, every so often, there's a weird line, where the wording makes the sentence some strange or a line that sounds a bit too corny and funny in an otherwise serious situation.

There's a few more issues I could mention. Like a possible early Game Over, whose logic is difficult to accept even after you complete the game and everything's revealed. Or a certain plot point, where an important piece of evidence is suddenly brought into the plot by a little girl, who apparently obtained it off-screen in a very improbable way.

Also, the main villain seriously has a potty mouth. While this is a staple in this type of fiction, like the Exorcist movies, it also makes the villain seem more like a little kid who just discovered swear words exist rather than a serious threat. I don't mind swearing, but some of his lines were so over the top that I just burst into laughter, I just couldn't take that character seriously past a certain point.

Still, these issues don't detract much from the experience. If you like horror games, certainly give this one a try.
