Attack of the MZ RTP is a short game made for the Trials of MZ event. Participants had only a little over a week to create a game, in addition, Plugins were not allowed and the only assets allowed were MZ RTP and self-edits of it. So, how did this game tackle these limitations?

As can be guessed from the title, the story is about an invasion from the default MZ database characters, who travel through the dimensions to conquer different worlds in the name of their "Dark Goddess". Their latest target is an advanced technological world populated by their SF counterparts with names that are anagrams of their own. You are of course playing as the SF characters fighting against Reid and his cronies. Along with Kasey, who is the only default character to join the heroes.

The game structure is simple and it's basically a series of boss battles connected with hallways containing vending machines that allow you to buy items. You enter the room with whatever next RTP character is the boss and after a short cutscene you enter a boss battle and after your victory you head towards the next one in a nearby room.

The battles themselves are a mixed bag. There's not that much tactical difference between the bosses and certain encounters seem to be badly balanced and could wipe out most of your party with one lucky crit. I have to appreciate the Reloading mechanic for certain weapons, which couldn't have been easy to implement without a plugin.

The story is alright, despite the silly premise, it actually does take itself seriously enough to be somewhat compelling.

Taking into account that this is an event game made in a week with limitations placed on the project, I've decided to add half a star to the final score, so this game gets 3 stars for me. A decent entry to the event, but not something that will stand out, for reasons good or bad.

Thanks for the review! I've recently replayed the game myself and found a lot of things I wished I could have done.

I treated it as a learning experience, since I don't make short games with short gameplay loops often.

No problem! It was a fine submission for the event :)
