This will likely be my last solo project to use the RTP

This will likely be my last solo project to use the RTP, barring contests or the like - and I guess one cannot rule out using the amazing 2k3 RTP. I'm just sick of the blocky nature of things. 16 bit is bae, and my style is more suited to that era anyway. Assets like REFMAP are way more fun to use, on the whole, and require less editing. I've spent a ton of time recoloring and editing the MZ RTP to suit my desire. Sure, it's a great foundation, but the kind of games I make just aren't well suited for the visual style of the RTP since VX Ace.

The only reason this project uses the MZ RTP is because of the fun I had in the MZ Trial period. After making "Project4", I started puttering around with dungeon edits and came up with a design that I liked. Jamie was created to showcase some of the dungeons I made with the edits.

After Jamie, I'm probably going to dive back into mapping commissions as well as my own 16-bit game - perhaps an update of Carlsev Saga or a port of Solitary. It's up in the air at this point.

Whether it's justified or not, it's true that many people avoid games which use the RTP resources. Not using RTP can certainly help your games stand out.

Oh for sure. And there's a huge preference for the 16-bit style. Even commonly used resources like Rudra and REFMAP are far more popular.
Rudra and REFMAP are like pizza. Even when the maps are bad, they're still pretty good.

Hello! I'm here to shill for White Screw!
If it's on the docket, it's never a bad time to consider making custom assets, too. When I started making my own assets, my projects started feeling like something I could truly call my own, which is a feeling that I didn't have as much of when I was using the RTP or edits.

I know it's not the route for everyone, but you might find a sense of immersion that you never knew before. Just something to consider!
If you do consider making your own assets, I recommend the program Aseprite if you're looking for a pixel art tool. It's $15 but is absolutely incredible and I use it for everything that involves pixels.

I'll have to give it a shot! Right now I'm using Photoshop haha.

Also, those White Screw assets look sexy af.
Aesprite is definitely the way to go.

Even for making edits, its dope.
I am so use to photoshop at this point and have it set up for pixeling that I can't bring myself to go for Aesprite myself. I am pretty sure I got it in a humble bundle at one time though. Is it that much better?
