A SHORT, STANDALONE PREQUEL TO CARLSEV SAGA
Playing Carlsev Saga is not necessary to play this game.

The time is thirteen years before the Great Revolution that would engulf the continent of Carlsev. Far from his homeland, the 25-year-old Major Xevic (renamed from "Deckiller" in the series) is leading a team of crack Carlsev soldiers on a mission to rescue prisoners from the neighboring continent of Berasev.

En route to their target on the far side of Berasev, there is an...incident. Major Xevic finds himself washed up on a desolate shore with not a single soul in sight except for local humanoids who call themselves "Demons". Xevic quickly realizes that he is unable to cast spells: the Essence, or the invisible substance that powers magic, seems to not exist on this island.

One thing is for certain: with this twist of fate, the lives of millions and the course of history will be changed forever.

Carlsev Zero is a short game made in 14 hours for the 14th Birthday event (actually, it'll be closer to 35 hours of devtime by the time I finish the full game). It is a heavily expanded version of the opening flashback cutscene from Carlsev Saga I; Xevic is Deckiller, and Ethan is the soldier who accompanied him during that cutscene. The goal here is to rekindle my passion for this universe, sharpen my writing chops, and hopefully offer a taste of what this universe has to offer in terms of story and lore.

Gameplay is similar to the original Carlsev Saga: combat is turn-based, and characters grow stronger by crafting tonics made from items dropped from enemies. The process has been streamlined a bit though, and another character can craft valuable accessories as well. Everything is handled via the 2k DBS as this was a short project for an event. The game is a little more than an hour long.

It's not Unchained, but...

Events really get me workin'. The RMN Birthday event was a golden opportunity for me to tell a story that I was going to include in the Carlsev Remake. This is part of my plan to address some of the valid criticism levied against Carlsev Saga 1 - namely, that the characters just plain sucked.

Although rushed, I managed to finish about 75 percent of the intended game for this event. Needless to say, the upcoming full version will actually be more than twice as long...

So here we are again: a small REFMAP project with both an event version and an upcoming expanded version. This is a little different than Unchained, though: I'm adding a lot of story content instead of optional stuff, with a TON of added scenes and a proper climax. The lore and dialogue have been reworked extensively to both make more sense and be more in line with my plans for this fictional universe. The event version is very much a rough draft of a larger thing.

I will probably use this project as a foundation for the flashback sequence in the remake, especially if it is well received. Fingers crossed.

Unchained is still coming and is basically complete in a rough form. I just need to give it a good playtesting and revise some trouble spots. But sometimes you have to strike the iron while it's hot, so I'll be finishing this before putting the final touches on Unchained. This story means something to me, and its completion will be a little cathartic for me.

I chose my username based on the original character who is now called Xevic. He unintentionally came across as a bit too perfect in CS1 - a "Mary Sue" as several people said. I knew he was far from this, but I did a piss poor job communicating that to the player in Carlsev Saga. I had plans for his development in later episodes, but clearly I should have done a better job setting him up sooner rather than later. What good are plot twists and lore when the characters are bland? This is my first step toward making things right.

Carlsev Saga! This name brings back so many memories! I'd be curious to play this... classical Rm2k!
Carlsev Zero looks better than Unchained.

Haha, thanks. The story is probably better than Unchained. Gameplay probably not so much. It's only a couple hours long, without sprawling dungeons and puzzles, but I'm optimistic :D People seemed to like the event demo. I'll probably be wrapping this up before going back to wrap up Unchained anyway.

Awesome! I'm really hoping to use this project as a springboard back into this universe. This was originally gonna be an extended flashback sequence in Carlsev Saga Remake, but I think it works better as a standalone mini prequel.
I admit I don't frequent the site very much any more, but please let me know when this has a download - I think I may be obligated by honor to review it.

Best of luck with this, and any other projects you may have up.

Nice to see you! It truly has been forever! Hope all is well with you too!

I should definitely finish this prequel sometime soon - the contest version was over a year ago now ;w;
