A 30 minutes run!

Chicken Run is a game that tricked me!
It looks like a typical Rm2k game, but it's a RPG Maker MZ game! One that uses the typical Rm2k graphics, of course. I also believed it was an action game about a chicken running, instead it's a classic party based jrpg!

In this game the protagonist is Frank, a chicken (as you guess from the title!) that will be served for dinner... IF he doesn't escape the farm before it's too late! But if the jrpgs taugh me something is that one single hero cannot do anything without a party of trusted friends, so the first thing is finding some companions.
The second is buying some potions from the dog. Ok, but how does he pay the dog? But with corn, that is used as money by the animals of the farm and can be found inside some pots, or looted from the defeated enemies. Corn is useful because not only you can buy consumables, but also permanent upgrades (to attacks, defense or even hitpoints) for the party members. And that's a good thing, since they do NOT level up!

Guess what? They will have to fight him sooner or later! And no, that pig isn't a normal animal of the farm... it's a monster!

What? Oh yes, no matter how many combat encounter you win, the protagonists are farm animals so they will stay on level one! Ok, there is the possibility to buy the permanent upgrades like mentioned before but this is not enough, isn't it?
No, luckily their quest will put them against the ghosts of three animals that tried to escape and failed, and act as bosses. Defeating them grants a key to unlock another zone AND also some skills: for example the Sammy the cat (that is a weak combatant but has a nice debuff skill) will become a spellcaster, and Clarence the ram (that is strong but slow) will learn to be the party cleric...

Enemies for the most part aren't really dangerous: you may avoid them (yes! No random encounters!) and are pretty weak, in the beginning you can even one-shot the evil pumpkins, later enemies are a bit stronger (and able to cast elemental spells or heal themselves), but still not as tough as the bosses.

For the rest the game is a single dungeon with some lever puzzles, hidden loot and secret equipment. Nothing complex, nothing hard, all fun!

This is probably Sammy's most useful (and only, at the beginning!) skill!

Final Verdict
Chicken Run may be played and finished in thirty minutes, or you can spend one hour to look everywhere and look for secrets, because I admit I did not unlock a particular door that I guess is some kind of secret, anyway I had fun and I guess this is what is really important.

The game is simple, and offers a classic dungeon delving adventure and combat against monsters, but with the addition of humorous dialogues, puns and funny exchanges between the party members and other animals of the farms. And ghosts!
It's a cute mini-rpg that still has some peculiar features (the absence of levels, the unique setting, for example) that distinguish it from the rest of the other games.
Also, it's fun! And if you are bored you can speed through the game without too many problems, because the combat encounters aren't particular difficult. Ok, you know what to do, of course, and take advantage of the learned skills and use the consumables, nothing that an experienced player cannot do!

Yes, the game is all here, anyway it's polished and looks good, even if probably a bit too classic and old style for someone. But not for me!
It's pretty good and fun, with nice use of the rm2k RTPs and lightning, nothing complex but still very well done!

I'm an rmn newb, and I never saw this review until now. So, sorry for the super late reply.

But thank you so much for the kind review! Glad to hear you enjoyed it. In retrospect I would probably would have done something different with the leveling system (perhaps just have the party level up normally, instead of doing the stat buy with corn system).

Anyway, lots to improve upon for future games. Thanks again for the feedback!

Heya! Was a fun little dungeon romp that I played it from the beginning to the end so... not bad at all, there were many neat ideas there!
