A Comprehensive Walkthrough

|| They Took My Beloved Endings Walkthrough ||

I've always thought I should make walkthroughs for some of the games that I made so I'll start with They Took My Beloved, being the most complex. This walkthrough will be chock full of spoilers so make sure not to reveal parts that you don't wish to see. Each section contains a part for a quick summary of the key requirements for the ending, one for tips, and one for the step-by-step explanation of what to do.

Some things to point out:
- The three bars on the top right indicate, from top to bottom, Affection, Sanity, and Health. The general rule is to keep all three high/maxed out for good endings.
- There are only two good endings out of eight.
- There are a total of six items, but you don't need all of them at once for any particular route.
- Sound cues are extremely important most of the time.
- The locations in the game are generally divided into Bedroom, Supermarket, Neighbor's House, and Underground Labyrinth. Day and night indicate the time of day. Each area has exploration sequences. In general, you should explore all rooms in an area for good endings.

-----------------------------
Ending 1: Denial
-----------------------------

This is a Bad Ending.

- Summary
The main requirements for this ending are to come to the underground labyrinth at night and to lose against the Butcher. The values of Affection, Sanity, and Health are irrelevant.

- Tips
It is very easy to achieve this ending, therefore it can be done by loading early saves for night routes (endings 3. 4, and 7). The key here is losing to the Butcher, which can be easily achieved by attacking at every turn, especially during the Butcher's heavy or counter-attack. It is best to unequip any weapons as they increase defense and attack damage.

- Detailed Guide

1. This route does not consider the final values of the meters, therefore you may choose any option up to the point of reaching the Supermarket.

You must not visit the Butcher's Stall on the right and instead go home immediately.

Alternatively, if wanting to visit the Neighbor's House, you must choose to leave whenever a prompt appears.

This will take you to the night route.

2. Leave the Bedroom upon waking up and head to the Neighbor's House. You may skip investigating the car as the Wrench is not necessary.

Head immediately to the bottom of the stairs to avoid getting caught.

The puzzle of the door should be solved quietly to avoid having to fight the Neighbor. The solution is shown below. It can easily be solved by listening to the softer-sounding clicks that indicate the correct value for each bar.

3. Once within the Underground Labyrinth, listen to the footsteps of Them. They will attack the Protagonist if players stay within the room or approach the direction that the sound comes from.

All the doors will be locked initially. Head to Room S at the middle right side of the map first.

Flick all switches down by pressing the text buttons beneath the images.

When leaving the room, make sure to listen to the sound of footsteps. If They are outside, remain still until the timer runs out and it becomes safe to leave.

4. Head to Room E1. It is located on the top left side of the map.

5. When the final boss fight begins, unequip any weapons to make the fight end quicker. The Butcher will instantly kill if you remain still during a heavy attack and deals large damage if you attack him during a counter-attack.

You will then achieve the Denial ending.

This is the easiest ending by far so I recommend doing this in conjunction with the other night routes.

-----------------------------
Ending 2: Guilt
-----------------------------

This is a Bad Ending.

- Summary
The main requirements for this ending are to have low Sanity (50% or lower) and to come to the Underground Labyrinth during the day. You must defeat the Butcher.

- Tips
An easy way to drop sanity below 50% is to explore the train upon arriving at the station. Do this only twice as doing it three times will cause an instant game over. A weapon is neccessary to kill the Butcher without relying on luck. The Wrench can be obtained by entering room D and choosing to leave immediately while the Knife is obtained if you encounter and defeat the Neighbor.

- Detailed Guide

1. At the start of the game, the Protagonist has 50% Sanity so it is best to drop that immediately upon every opportunity. Leaving the Pills, for example, drops the Sanity and raises Affection. The reduction is small, however, so it is safer to take it along as the key requirement for this ending is defeating the Butcher.

The Pills can be obtained by checking the desk in the Bedroom.

2. An easy way to drop sanity is by exploring the train twice when visiting the Supermarket (going forward on the train). Doing it three times will cause a game over.

3. To enter the day route players MUST visit the Butcher's stall. This is done by going right while in the Supermarket.

4. After being taken to the Neighbor's House, players must make sure to stay within the house and find the entrance to the Underground Labyrinth. This can be done by immediately going forward when the option appears.

The first attempt will be unsuccessful. Later, by choosing to have dessert players will have another opportunity to explore the house.

A puzzle lock stands in the way. It can be solved by listening for softer clicks that indicate the correct value for each bar. The solution is shown below.

Failing this puzzle will force players to meet the Neighbor again. You can fight him, but it will be difficult. The Pills can be used in this fight to make it easier.

5. Once inside the Underground Labyrinth, make sure to always listen to the sound of footsteps. If They are around, do not stay in the same room or head toward the source of the sound.

All doors will be locked initially, so make your way to Room S first. It is located on the middle right side of the map.

Flick all switches down by pressing the text buttons beneath the images.

When leaving the room, make sure to listen to the sound of footsteps. If They are outside the door, make sure to remain still until it is safe to proceed.

6. If the players do not have a weapon at this stage, the Wrench can be found in Room D. It is located at the top right side of the map.

When an option to leave appears, select that one to receive the Wrench. Proceed to leave the room.

7. Finally head to Room E1. It is located at the top left side of the map.

8. When fighting the Butcher, a weapon will automatically be equipped should you have one. Make sure to watch out for his attacks as he has four attack patterns: Weak Attack, Normal Attack, Heavy Attack, and Counter-attack. In general, always attack during weak and normal attacks, but defend during heavy attacks. To avoid getting damaged during counter-attacks, players must not attack or defend.

The Wrench has higher defense while the Knife deals more damage. The following is an example of a counter-attack indicator dialogue.

Defeating the Butcher lets you achieve the Guilt ending. The prompt to kill the Boyfriend will appear twice but regardless of choice, you will still reach the Guilt ending by this point.

Using this save file you can also lose to the Butcher and achieve the Reborn ending.

-----------------------------
Ending 3: Rage
-----------------------------

This is a Bad Ending.

- Summary
The main requirements for this ending are max Affection, high Sanity (50% or higher) and to come to the Underground Labyrinth during the night. You must defeat the Butcher. You also must fail the final quick time event or not take the Biokey.

- Tips
To obtain high Sanity players should pick options that seem the least dangerous, most rational, or most polite. Affection on the other hand, is gained from things that seem emotional or related to the Boyfriend (e.g. looking at the teddy bear at the bedside, looking at the box of cereal at the supermarket). Try to increase Affection and avoid actions that deplete Sanity.

- Detailed Guide

1. To ensure that the Affection reaches maximum at the end, you must try to visit every location that increases Affection. Dialogue affects Sanity and Affection but as the change of value is minimal, simply pick options that don't seem irrational.

In the Bedroom make sure to pick up the Pills and look at the teddy bear (forward and left option). Once those are done, go out of the room (go right).

2. When going to the Supermarket, DO NOT explore the train as this will reduce the Sanity.

Immediately pick the left option.

3. In the Supermarket make sure to look at the boxes of cereal (forward option) to increase Affection.

Once that is done, visit the Butcher's Stall (right option).

4. In the Neighbor's House, choose to stay so that you can maximize your Affection and Sanity.

You will then have the option to explore the house. Choose right so that you can talk to the Neighbor in the kitchen.

5. You will need to ask all questions in the kitchen. All of these will increase Sanity and Affection.

After eating together, choose to have dessert to further increase Affection.

6. After waking from sleep, avoid interacting with anything in the room as they drop Sanity significantly. Immediately go outside (go right).

You can choose to investigate the car to obtain the Wrench. Enter the Neighbor's house and head for the Underground Labyrinth entrance (go forward). You can also go to the kitchen to get the Knife (go right). To defeat the final boss you will need to have a weapon.

The entrance to the Underground Labyrinth is blocked by a puzzle door. To solve it, listen for the softer sounding clicks that indicate if the value of the bar is correct. The solution is shown below.

7. When moving in the Underground Labyrinth make sure to listen for the sound of footsteps. If They are nearby, you must not stay in the same room or head in the direction of the sound.

All doors are locked initially so head for Room S. It is located in the middle right side of the map.

Flick all switches down by pressing the text buttons beneath the images.

When leaving the room, make sure to listen to the sound of footsteps. If They are outside, you must wait until it is safe to proceed.

8. If the Affection and Sanity are still not sufficient at this point, head to Room E2. It is located on the middle left side of the map.

Choose to investigate the room. If you take the Biokey, make sure to quickly select the prompt to remove your hand to avoid getting damaged.

9. Finally, head to Room E1. It is located on the top left side of the map.

10. Defeat the Butcher in combat. The Butcher has four attack patterns: Weak Attack, Normal Attack, Heavy Attack, and Counter-Attack. Observe the indicating dialogues and react accordingly. In general, attack during Weak and Normal Attacks but defend during Heavy Attacks. Do not attack or defend during Counter-Attacks.

An example of a line of dialogue for Counter-Attack is shown below.

11. If you have the Biokey at this point, make sure to fail the final QTE by waiting until the time runs out. This will give you the Rage ending.

-----------------------------
Ending 4: Despair
-----------------------------

This is a Bad Ending.

- Summary
The main requirements for this ending are to have low Sanity (less than 50%) and to come to the Underground Labyrinth during the night. You must defeat the Butcher.

- Tips
An easy way to reduce Sanity is by exploring the train twice upon arrival (-40% Sanity). Do not visit the Butcher as this will take you to the Neighbor's House, where opportunities to gain Sanity and Affection are abundant. Immediately go home instead. Later in the Underground Labyrinth, visit room D to reduce Sanity if it is still higher than 50%.

The Pills can be obtained by checking the desk in the Bedroom (forward option).

2. An easy way to drop sanity is by exploring the train twice when visiting the Supermarket (going forward on the train). Doing it three times will cause a game over.

3. Leave the Supermarket immediately by heading home (left option).

4. After waking up at night, you will have the option to explore. If the Sanity still needs to be lowered, you can select the forward and left options. DO NOT reach zero Sanity as it will cause a game over.

Leave the room by going right. Take the Wrench from the car and enter the Neighbor's House.

5. Head down to the Underground Labyrinth entrance (forward option). You can also get the Knife by heading right to the kitchen first.

Solve the puzzle door by listening for the softer clicks which indicate if the value of the current bar is correct. The solution is shown below. Do not fail this as you will have to fight the Neighbor.

7. If the players do not have a weapon at this stage, the Wrench can be found in Room D. It is located at the top right side of the map.

When an option to leave appears, select that one and proceed to leave the room. Otherwise, you can also reduce Sanity by choosing to investigate but this will not reward the player with a Wrench.

8. Finally head to Room E1. It is located at the top left side of the map.

Defeating the Butcher lets you achieve the Despair ending.

-----------------------------
Ending 5: Promise
-----------------------------

This is a Bad Ending.

- Summary
The main requirements for this ending are to have max Affection, very high Sanity (90% or higher), and to come to the Underground Labyrinth during the day. You must defeat the Butcher. You must fail the final quick time event or not have the Biokey.

- Tips
The Protagonist is given 50% Sanity at the start compared to Affection having 0%, therefore prioritize filling up the Affection meter first by picking things that seem emotional or related to the Boyfriend (e.g. looking at the teddy bear at the bedside, looking at the box of cereal at the supermarket). To come during the day, players must visit the Butcher's stall and explore the Neighbor's house. Never pick the option to leave. If a fight with the Neighbor is unavoidable, use the Pills to heal. It is better to take the Biokey and fail the final QTE instead of avoiding room E1 as that room gives quite a lot of Affection and Sanity.

- Detailed Guide

1. This ending is tifficult to complete. Although there are variations, the following is the simplest and most effective route.

When meeting the Neighbor for the first time, choose to greet him politely.

Next, choose to ignore him.

2. In the Bedroom you must look at the teddy bear (left option). The pills are optional but can be picked up to make the final boss fight easier.

Leave the room by going right.

3. When going to the Supermarket, DO NOT explore the train as this will reduce the Sanity.

Immediately pick the left option.

4. In the Supermarket make sure to look at the boxes of cereal (forward option) to increase Affection.

Once that is done, visit the Butcher's Stall (right option).

5. In the Neighbor's House, choose to stay.

You will then have the option to explore the house. You must choose to go forward so that the Protagonist is aware of the existence of the Underground Labyrinth. You will be able to get a chance to sneak down later.

5. After eating together, choose to have dessert. You will have the opportunity to sneak down instead of leaving.

The way will be blocked by a puzzle door. This can be solved by listening to the softer clicks which indicate if the value of the bar is correct. The solution is shown below.

Alternatively, failing the puzzle will give you the chance to fight the Neighbor. This will be a difficult fight. You can use the Pills to heal to make it easier.

8. You will need a weapon to win the final boss fight. The Wrench can be found in Room D. It is located on the top right side of the map.

You must choose to leave immediately. This will reward you with a Wrench.

9. If Sanity and Affection are still below the required value, head to Room E2. It is located on the middle left side of the map.

Choose to investigate the room. You will be able to fully max out Affection and Sanity. When taking the Biokey, make sure to quickly select the prompt to remove your hand to avoid getting damaged.

10. Finally, head to Room E1. It is located on the top left side of the map.

12. If you have the Biokey you must fail the final QTE by waiting for the timer to run out. You will then receive the Promise ending.

-----------------------------
Ending 6: Reborn
-----------------------------

This is a Bad Ending.

- Summary
The main requirements for this ending are to come to the Underground Labyrinth during the day and to lose against the Butcher. The values of Affection, Sanity, and Health are irrelevant.

- Tips
This ending can be achieved by loading a save for ending 2. As you only need to get to the Underground Labyrinth during the day, the only key requirement is visiting the Butcher's stall and exploring the Neighbor's house when the opportunity comes up.

- Detailed Guide

1. As the key requirement for this ending is to reach the Underground Labyrinth during the day, you are free to pick any option until reaching the train. Avoid exploring the train three times as it will cause a gameover.

2. To enter the day route players MUST visit the Butcher's stall. This is done by going right while in the Supermarket.

5. Finally head to Room E1. It is located at the top left side of the map.

6. By losing to the Butcher you will achieve the Reborn ending.

-----------------------------
Ending 7: Acceptance
-----------------------------

This is a Good Ending.

- Summary
The main requirements for this ending are to have max Affection, high Sanity (50% or more), and to come to the Underground Labyrinth during the night. You must defeat the Butcher. You must have the Biokey and succeed in the final quick time event.

- Tips
To fill up the Affection meter select options that feel emotional or related to the Boyfriend. As Sanity starts off at 50% it is easier to simply maintain it rather than attempt to maximize it. Visit the Butcher's Stall and go to the Neighbor's House as you will gain more opportunities to increase Affection and Sanity but make sure not to enter the Underground Labyrinth. Make sure to take the Biokey from room E1 before entering the final boss fight.

8. Next, head to Room E2. It is located on the middle left side of the map.

Choose to investigate the room. When taking the Biokey, make sure to quickly select the prompt to remove your hand to avoid getting damaged.

11. Solve the final QTE by equipping the Biokey and going to the control panel. This will give you the Acceptance ending.

Acceptance symbolizes the true end to the cycle of grief. As opposed to Closure, I consider Acceptance to be the best ending.

-----------------------------
Ending 0: Closure
-----------------------------

This is the Canon Ending.

- Summary
The main requirements for this ending are to have max Affection, very high Sanity (90% or more) and to come to the Underground Labyrinth during the day. You must defeat the Butcher. You must have the Biokey and succeed in the final quick time event.

- Tips
This ending is the most difficult to achieve so it is better to attempt this ending first and load save files afterward to achieve other endings. Obtain high Affection by exploring all areas in the Bedroom and Supermarket (avoid exploring the train). Sanity can be easily maintained by not picking things that appear too risky. When entering the Underground Labyrinth make sure to solve the puzzle instead of entering through brute force to avoid losing too much Health and Sanity. Make sure to get the Biokey at room E1. There is a wrench at room D that can only be obtained if the player chooses to leave immediately upon entry.

- Detailed Guide

1. This ending is the most difficult to complete.

8. You will need a weapon to win the final boss fight. The Wrench can be found in Room D. It is located on the top right side of the map.

You must choose to leave immediately. This will reward you with a Wrench.

9. Next, head to Room E2. It is located on the middle left side of the map.

Choose to investigate the room. When taking the Biokey, make sure to quickly select the prompt to remove your hand to avoid getting damaged.

10. Finally, head to Room E1. It is located on the top left side of the map.

12. Solve the final QTE by equipping the Biokey and going to the control panel. This will give you the Closure ending.

You can use this save file to complete the Promise ending.

Closure is considered as the canonical ending to the story, but it strays from the symbolism of the cycle of grief. It explains the narrative of the story, but doesn't deliver a very strong emotional impact. I personally consider Acceptance as the best ending.

----------------------------------
Bonus: Alternate Variations
----------------------------------

There's a way to obtain the Knife even in day route. To do this you must have Sanity below 50% and Affection at least 40% then talk to the Neighbor in the kitchen.

You can then ask about the Boyfriend. As your sanity is low, the Protagonist will be enraged and impulsively choose to kill the Neighbor. You will equip the Knife for this combat.

Possessing the Knife allows you to change weapons when fighting the Butcher. Originally this was an intended feature as the boss fight was supposed to be even harder.

The only reward now is just possibly getting all six items and getting some bragging rights about it.

Miscellaneous

Version 1.2.0

Hi!

After some final thorough debugging, I've finally removed all bugs that cause certain endings to be unattainable. Version 1.2.0 is the final version of the game unless any major bugs are reported.

Other updates include:
- Fixed audio delay in the secret hatch segment
- Minor adjustment to the final battle
- Fixed some dialogues and sound placement
- Achieving best endings now alter the main menu image

Miscellaneous

Version 1.1.2

Hi!

I've updated the game to version 1.1.2 which includes the missing sound effects and bgm, plus descriptions for items that you can view in inventory. This should help make more sense of what they'd be used for. I also fixed a bug where one of the endings get switched up.

Edit: I've also fixed some rollback issues and displayables showing up at the wrong times.

Miscellaneous

Updates

Hi!

I just want to note that, while the game is complete, there's some stuff I realize I haven't put in (up-to-date backgrounds, sound effects, etc.). There'll be an update later but I'll put it up after the event ends cuz there's quite a bit I need to fix.

Hope you enjoy the game as is though, it's pretty much done!
