Monthly Update: July 2023

MONTHLY UPDATE: JULY, 2023

I'm excited to post a pretty big update this month. As always, thank you, AVEE, for more amazing artwork! You're the best!

NOTE that the new features below are not in the current demo. They're being added and will be going live soon. And now... the update:

Indie Detective Video Feature

bio-Synthetica was featured on the YouTube channel Indie Detective as "10 Indie Game Demos You Missed - Steam Next Fest 2023." You can catch the full video below (1:25):

Evasion Counter System

A new feature will be added to combat with the next demo update. Whenever R3-M1 evades an enemy's attack, a small slider mini-game will populate under you. If you hit the target quickly, you'll perform a counterattack and deal some additional damage to that monster!

Corrosion Build-up

In the current demo, Corrosion is a state that applies, and stacks, as a result of specific attacks. There are currently three levels of corrosion that do damage over time based on the level applied. This got irritating to manage and heal during combat. As a way to reduce the frustration, a new system will be implemented that will slowly build up with each corrosive attack or when R3-M1 performs a melee ability on dark bile enemies.

When the bar to the left fills up completely, R3-M1 will be inflicted with Corrosion Lvl 1. The bar then resets; if filled again, Corrosion Lvl 2 will apply. This will help players manage this debilitating state, giving them more strategy around avoiding it. Certain items will reduce build-up and remove the state altogether.

New Enemy & Battle Introduced Sooner

The biggest complaint I've received is how long it takes to reach combat. The beginning has a slow burn and takes a bit to build up, confusing many players about which type of game this is. Since bio-Synthetica is an adventure game and will feature a lot of combat, I wanted to find a way to introduce it sooner. Since you won't meet The Lurker and his minions until later, you will encounter the horrifying "Bile Rats" early on.

These dead rats have been infested and reanimated by the dark, mysterious bile that's been found around The Dilapidated Factory. They're weak and can be easily killed but possess a horrible attack that causes Corrosion build-up. Best to take them out as quickly as possible.

Mod System

In an attempt to enhance the player's experience of controlling a robot that can learn/upgrade its abilities, I'm adding a new mechanic that lets you equip three types of mods: Utility, Defensive, & Particle Gun. R3-M1 will receive various perks, benefits, and additional abilities when you find and install these mods. More details to come on this new system, including screenshots & videos. This will eventually be added to the demo with several mods to discover and install.

I hope you enjoyed the update. Remember that the four new features above are not in the current demo. They are being implemented and will be featured in a demo update soon. Feel free to "watch" this post, wishlist my game on Steam, and follow to be informed once this update goes live. I'm very active with my community and willing to listen, adapt and implement popular feedback into my game. Day 7: The Shadow Ox

The Shadow Ox

Eidari is the strange ox found at all of Sagrim the Vendor's locations. It's unknown if this animal is another breed of the creatures that surfaced after the great cataclysmic event or simply an ordinary ox corrupted by The Overlord's presence.

One thing is for certain-Eidari is the only shadow ox R3-M1 has encountered. It follows Sagrim, helping to transport his many goods, and it's unknown how this massive beast even arrives in half the locations Sagrim occupies. Magic? A rare animal trait? That part is a mystery. Yet, despite this, Eidari is a loyal companion to Sagrim and one of his only friends.

Or is there more to this monstrous beast?

Day 6: BATTLE-bot

BATTLE-bot

BATTLE-bots are what put Iylo-tech on the map and helped move forward the distribution of robotic entertainment. Starting as small mechanical toys for children, BATTLE-bots quickly evolved into larger, more substantial units that took the combat sports industry to the next level.

Robotic fighting became all the rave, and after a few prosperous years, Iylo-tech became a billion-dollar industry. BATTLE-bots were on every billboard, magazine, television advertisement, and corner of the globe. Yet, with all other forms of advanced technology, it took no time for different groups and organizations to develop their form of robotic fighting units.

News traveled the globe that several terrorist organizations started creating their own version of "BATTLE-bots" to help during times of war. It wasn't long after rumors began circulating that Iylo-tech had started to receive funding from the U.S. Government. Speculation quickly surfaced that testing had begun using advanced weaponry, vehicles, and robotic field units to help aid in military training. This, however, has never been fully proven.

Day 5: Karn

Karn

Karn was an action-adventure beat-'em-up game popularized in the mid-80s. Players took on the role of Karn the Barbarian as he hacked and slashed his way through hordes of undead, goblins, and other vicious creatures.

Sadly, while this particular game is no longer playable, that didn't stop R3-M1's creator from using what was still functional to turn it into a retro-style training database. Spending experience to learn new abilities and upgrade current skills is just one of the several features this hub will provide. It also acts as a music player and tutorial guide. Select which song you'd like to play while relaxing in your living quarters, and refresh on some tutorials. This retro-data hub is the perfect mini-computer and nostalgic decor to help spruce up any living space.

Day 4: The Brute

The Brute

Brutes don't fit the typical idiom. While they are mostly all brawn, they possess quite a bit of brain. These large, hulking minions of The Overlord's army have proven to be effective and quite dangerous during combat. They hit hard and, when enraged, have an even more powerful crushing attack that renders R3-M1 confused.

A Brutes hulking demeanor isn't the only risk they pose. During combat, they will roar, inspiring their minion companions to fight with more ferocity. This tactic makes the Brute not only a physical threat but a strategic adversary, as well. They hit hard, can take a beating, and provide support to their allies. While many would say it's best to take them out as quickly as possible, this will also allow their minion companions to strike you in great numbers. Any battle against a Brute requires quick thinking and a great strategy to come out victorious.

Day 3: Sagrim the Vendor

Sagrim the Vendor

Sagrim is shrouded in mystery. A brethren to the shadow creatures that seek death and destruction, yet he does not share this desire. Sagrim prefers peace and trading the various objects he has discovered while exploring the ruins of the fallen human city.

He loves shiny things and is willing to barter for everyday items—common goods by human standards but "treasures" to him. For each item you bring him, he'll grant R3-M1 a unique coin that can be used to trade for more rare objects.

Yet, his peculiar and, often, irrational behavior poses the concern that he may have a hidden agenda. Does he desire peace, or is he simply biding his time for something more nefarious? He has offered his services to aid R3-M1 in their quest, so until his true purpose is discovered, there's no harm in keeping him as an ally.
