"I have no voice! You have silenced me!"

The Premise

A young man receives a call from his girlfriend, inviting him over to watch a movie or two. The couple, laying about on the couch, watches the actors onscreen portray their roles as the hours pass. Midnight arrives.

The world ends.

The sky is cast a dark red, and the sun turns as black as coal. Where once the streets were walked by people, they are now host to beings of night, unclean creatures that seek the flesh of the living.

The couple discovers their talent to fend off these creatures, and they flee for their lives.

"What's going on? Are there any survivors? How did this happen? Is it just our city, or is it the entire state? The country? The world? What do we eat? Where do we sleep?

...Can we ever be safe again?
"

The Gameplay

Speak No Evil is styled after the Shin Megami Tensei model of gameplay, and is thus a battle-heavy, relatively difficult experience focused on elemental affinities; labyrinthine dungeons, and bosses that require an understanding of mechanics to defeat.

The most prevalent aspect of the game is the importance of elemental weaknesses. Striking a weakness deals five times more damage than normal - very rare are the occasions where this isn't an instant kill. So, the experimentation with elements, and the discovery of which are effective and which are not, is a central aspect of the game's design. As the player progresses, groups of enemies where one is immune to - or even absorbs - the other's weakness become increasingly common.

This might have proven frustrating, had new enemies with new sets of skills appeared in each area. However, Speak No Evil was built to prevent this by re-using enemy species - simply with higher levels. This, in turn, might have lead to a lack of enemy variety. Which is, technically, true - there aren't that many distinct enemy types in this game. There are, however, a large number of enemy troop configurations; and this is the biggest key to Speak No Evil's battles. Enemies that can berserk the player are paired with enemies that are immune to physical attacks; those that are highly vulnerable to magic are paired with those that sap the player's SP. It all comes together to create a situation where the player is constantly threatened, without being ball-bustingly hard.

The Sales Pitch

Speak No Evil is not for everyone. It wasn't designed with welcoming in new players to the RPG genre. Deaths, while not constant, are to be expected; explanations of what HP does or what Experience is aren't given nor expected to be necessary. The game was designed to provide the player with a decent challenge over the course of a mid-length eastern-style RPG. This game uses "fake difficulty" techniques at times, such as enemies that steal the player's SP or ones with unfair elemental affinities, and makes no attempt to hide it.

If you want a large about of story, or you absolutely hate dying, I would suggest you turn your attention elsewhere. This game is very light on story, and the difficulty starts high and climbs steadily.

For those of you who want a game that is capable of beating you once in a while, while being perfectly possible to progress in, I would recommend this game to you.

For the masochistic players, there's a HARDCORE mode available after achieving an ending. It's not even remotely fair, in any sense of the word.

If you're referring to their physical attack, it's typeless - Physical resistance won't do much good. If you're way early in the game, you can try and get your hands on Lightning equips to hit its weakness. The giants in the beginning are susceptible to lightning as well, so it'll make your life a lot easier.
Alright, I'll give that a try, after I find my balls. Thanks for the tip.
A couple of bugs in case no one has reported them:

Not sure if this was a bug, but I couldn't use any of Alexander's abilities once they were unlocked for quite a while, except for Sano, which only worked outside of battle. In battle, his skills were grayed out.

Trying to exit the hotel when you first arrive gives the player the option to "go home." If you choose to do this, it apparently skips through some of the plot and sends you to another place. There's a table that should block the exit, but you can actually walk through the right half of it.

In several areas, when you reenter a room, all the enemies and boxes reappear, so you can farm monsters and boxes indefinitely. In the police station for example, there's a red box next to a save point and a staircase. The player can save scum until the box gives double AP, then use the stairs to make the box reappear, save, and repeat for unlimited AP. You should probably keep red boxes away from save points to avoid that.

Regen 3 was set to resist, not inflict, so it wasn't working, but that's an easy fix.

Setting Int influence to 3 for all the damage spells makes the Skill stat almost worthless. RPG Maker 2k and 2k3 hate that stat so much that they make it only 1/4 as effective as Attack, so it makes almost no difference in raising/lowering damage for magic. That's why I always have to set attributes for magic to 400% for normal, just so it actually does something.
Finally reached that subway bug. Anyone know how to fix that? The only enemy left is on top of the train, so I always get stuck after killing it. Maybe I'll just tinker with the events.

Nevermind, I fixed it. In case anyone else is wondering, the event that is triggered when you kill all the monsters is in the Common Events tab. Just had to add a command to set the elevation to 2.
After the hospital, the next story segment won't trigger. When I use the bed, it just goes black, and nothing happens, but I can open the menu. When I exit the menu, it warps me back to the living room, and nothing has changed.

Also, is it supposed to be impossible to return to the first part of the hospital by backtracking? It just sends me in circles.

Second (?) floor of the alternate-version hospital, the room with 2 key boxes can't be entered because the black tile is impassable.

Another interesting bug: In battle, highlight a skill, then cancel, then use Recharge. You will use Recharge and the skill you had highlighted previously.

Fight #6 in the bonus starry path place ends in instant victory.

happy birthday
...I don't suppose anyone has tips for Joseph? I can't seem to do anything at all in that fight without him effortlessly undoing it.
Man, what's up with this game? It's not just that there are way too many enemies who are ridicilously strong, but the game is full of bugs. I'm wondering how anyone could play through it as I got stuck again and again, finally reaching a point in the hospital where it crashed no matter what I did.
I'm also getting the hospital freeze bug, with the added bug of ALL monsters, everywhere, vanishing; there's no encounters ANYWHERE.

I was originally able to fight monsters as usual, but I closed the window and reopened the program after a bad fight in the supermarket. After loading, all monsters were gone across my current save files. (The only non-current save files I had were just before Gabriel's boss, which I had no particular desire to refight.) Replacing all of my non-save files with fresh ones didn't appear to solve the bug, nor did rebooting...

When I go to sleep and head to the hospital (the cut infection talk, etc), it finishes, I am about to regain control, and I get a message "Access violation in module 'RPG_RT.exe' in with address 004A810D and offset 0379D6B7 of type Read occurred."

Things appear to work normally in a New Game, but working all the way back to where I was is extremely unappealing, especially when I don't know exactly what caused the bug.

Any help? I'd like to finish the game; it's enjoyable enough, especially now that I have customization options available.
I have played 3 persona games and 2 smt games and they are nowhere near as hard as this, and there are too many enemies

I agree. This game is way too hard which is a shame because the story line seems really good. In the beginning of t he game, monsters has resistance to your attacks and your spells. They are constantanly decreasing your speed and your defense. It wasn't fun. I won some battles out of luck. Next time, make mutiple difficulty settings. Also tone down the numbers of enemy. Get rid of the stupid enemies having resistance to your attacks. Hopefully but i doubt your gone to do it, make the game easier. I really wanted to finish this but the game is just way too hard.
i agree to you i have 3 persona devil summoner
this game is hard from the beggining if you don.t avoid them at the start of the game you die

I'm sorry, but: how?
I'm stuck at the battle against six red Renamons right at the beginning. I was so diligent about finding out what their weakness was and buying the right perks. But as soon as I whittle the party down to three, they always start pulling out the "Sucker Punch" move, which is pretty much "enemy presses F12". How. And why. And what. What is the strats n' tacts.

meisam your not using semicolon properly, and that's a laughing matter.

Well it was a good game, I hope you come back to this game and fix it's bugs, because in my opinion it have the potential to become a featured game, it just need some polishing.

Anyway anyone who don't have RM2k3 (and knowledge of how to use it) is out of luck to play this game, you will be stuck on supermarket 4th dungeon no matter what.
I can't use skills with Alexander after the battle with the 6 demons in the beginning.
