Ain't That A Witch

Hello and welcome to the review of Witch.Rpg DX or Witch(DOT)Rpg DX, a game by Fee_Nicks made with the OHRRPGCE engine.

This game was made in 2015 in three days (!), and released now here after a 2019 revision (that added more content and also better pics), at Halloween (that's why "DX"). And, guess what? This is a game about Halloween.
We learn from the initial sketched cutscene that the protagonists are two witches named Verdi and Wyrd, and these two noticed that tonight monsters are all over the place, It is time to hunt ghosts, vampires, other witches, a succubus and a demon. But things won't be so easy because besides these designed targets there will be lots of random encounters with lesser enemies (like bats, pumpkins and animated trees) and optional boss encounters (like the mummy!).

Oh no a mummy! Kill it with FIRE! Literally!

Combat is classical turn based, the witches have standard melee attack and a "magical" attack, but they also will learn spells (that cost MP, call them magic or mana points) as they level up fighting enemies. These go from elemental attacks (of different strength, also some also hit all opponents) to the ability to drain Mana or Life points from the enemies.
Battles are fast and simple, random encounters are a bit frequent but you can escape from them, anyway most of them are pretty easy, while on the contrary boss encounters can be quite difficult and it's suggested to start from the ghosts, then go to hunt the vampires, and so on, following the list. Levelling up is obligatory but trust me, it won't take much, I often gained two levels after each boss fight, earning some extremely useful spells, since the trick is hitting the weak point of each enemy: for example the fire witch suffers a lot of damage from ice attacks, while some undeads are instead weak to the element of fire, and so on.

Clearly our characters start with some equipment that may be upgraded with the resources (loot!) earned killing the enemies, but it may also be found in some chests scattered on the various maps. There are also some shops that sell consumables (that are candies of course, it's Halloween!) or equipment, pity that no one buys our old and useless gear, that is soon replaced.
Being Halloween there is the possibility to dress as some of the monsters encountered: for example you may dress as a mummy or a succubus, but there are also different witch dresses and hats, besides magic books and wands. The cool part is that the inventory also displays the clothes worn by Verdi and Wyrd, a nice feature. Oh and I liked how some gear can be worn by both witches (like the hats) and other is restricted to one of the two (because one of the two is more serious than the other, well play the game an see!).

Uh thanks for clarifying this! Very kind of you!

Visually Witch.Rpg DX is very cute: it looks like a game boy color game and you can also select various palette, but that I liked most was the style of the maps and the menus, that are functional but stylish. I liked a lot some pieces of the scenario like the trees and the protagonists' house, that really stand out compared to other more "ordinary" objects. There are some unnecessary interactions, often humorous, with some pieces of the scenarios like the graves or the signs, pity that these are all concentrated in the beginning, since later underground and rooms do not offer much aside from loot chests. Now the music... it's very bizarre! This is taken from the Vyacheslav Mescherin orchestra and is pretty good, fits the game (music is relaxing during exploration and really energetic during combat) and it's an original choice, so another good point!

Now, the problem I had with the game: difficulty is easy but not too much (anyway some grinding will make everything possible, and you won't need to grind too much and you can also save anywhere!), if you attack some enemies too early the game over is almost guaranteed, loot is also adequate but not extremely generous, and as I said before there is no way to sell the items.
And then the worst part: there is no indication of the locations of some enemies, and for this reason I have still to complete the game. I do not now I assumed I hunted each monster, even the devil, but it's still on the list, so I am not even sure I found the right one or if this is a bug. I also reloaded an earlier save and defeated him before attacking the witches, but is was no use.
And I searched every corner of every map, it was no use (there was only a crypt that is inaccessible but I guess it opens after defeating the devil).
I do not know, I spent an hour (took me 30-35 minutes to defeat all the targets) visiting all the ten maps (plus the two of the witches' house that are empty except for the furniture) of the game but sadly I am stuck!
What shall I do? Oh, ok I'll end the review! (at least I am able to finish something!)

Yay! Costumes! Do you like the mummy outfit? YES? Do you like this palette choice? NO? Uhm ok!

A not-so-final Verdict
Here we are, I could not complete the game but I hope the developer will be able to help me or why not... try the game and see if you can complete the list! Well the game looks good, I just dislike a bit the many random encounters (it's all about combat, there are no puzzles or quests of any kind, but ok, this was made in three days!) and it's quite short but has well written humorous dialogues. My biggest complain is that I cannot complete it and I do not know, maybe it's all my fault! The problem is that without indications or hints it's hard to know this... what a pity!

PS: I downloaded the original Witch.Rpg... and I got stuck on that one too!!! It's so depressing, this time I wasn't even able to reach the demon-ball (maybe it is not present in the old version, I am not sure!) I guess I need a walkthrough. Sigh. I do not even know if it's my fault or if there is some kind of bug because I cannot really understand why this is happening!

Oh and if you are curious, there is also a 2016 sequel that uses the same visual style, Witch 2 – The Centennial Castle click here for more

Update!

Final Verdict (YES, I won!)
Ok I was able to finally find that devil! It's not as easy to find as the other characters (I interacted with every item from every direction... I do not know if this made.the difference) anyway I'm finally able to say I've completed the game! Oh, and do not worry, that demon is not even the final boss, there is a whole dungeon before the real final enemy, and this includes a multiple bossfight! Yay! Happy to say that the game isn't bugged, but boy, that part was hard...
Or was it me?
Please try it and let me know! I finished it in less than an hour, and it's a nice short game, simple but stylish, so it's totally worth your time, I guess!

Not exactly related, but is there a walkthrough for Witch 2? I am a bit stuck. Have 2 accessories to find and 4 outfits. I hope there's no secret passage in the caverns, gah. Also, I have no idea who Alraune is. Or who to deliver the deals to. And also 6-7 candles (not sure if the middle spot needs a candle too or not.)

Nope, I do not think so, I looked everywhere for hints and walkthroughts on youtube and on slimesalad.com looking also on the reviews for hints but... I had no chance, I'm sorry!
I will check the second one anyway sooner or later!

Oh, okay! Thanks for looking, haha.
If you find anything in your playthrough, do tell me! There's also a couple of paths I have noticed which I haven't found yet. First is something about another hidden path inside a hidden room. And other is a path leading to the door behind the seer, who has a treasure beside her.
Yeah, none of my games are big or in the right crowds to get any sort of walkthroughs. Maybe one day.

Anyway, some of the trouble points in witch2.rpg:

- There's a room you skip over when going right from the room Norn's in that you can only access while wearing the right outfit. Hint: the music choice in the room you skip over to calls back to witch.rpg. .
- There's a staircase up to the seer's place in the cavern maze. You're on the right track if you've found a sign with something resembling actual directions on it. wait nevermind, that goes elsewhere
- Alraune's in the forest. Someone has the directions through it near the forest entrance.
- Verdi gives you something else if you wear both chimera costume pieces and talk to her.
- The secret-within-a-secret is the place where you use your candles.

Dunno if that covers everything, but hopefully that should be it.
Thanks! Well still these are good games, I mean, I had fun with this one! Noy bad at all! I'll try the other one too, eve if you won't post it here! (but I hope!) :D
Eh, I'm saving putting it up here for next year. After all, it's past halloween at this point.
Ok nice, maybe a revised version too (like for the game here)? No worries I will wait for that!

Thanks for the help.
- Okay, I got it.
-I have seen 3 signs, are there more? 1 says I am on the correct path, other says it's a confusing mess of arrows, and the 3rd has no letters. Actually nevermind, I reached the seer through the path to the left which has the undine in it. I had to use the gauntlets. I knew there was one other place i.e. in the caverns where I had to use them but forgot it's that room, haha.
-I followed the path to Alraune, but she's not there. The save file says it's "Forest's end" but no one is there. Edit: Nevermind, I got it. Didn't know I could go north there to an open space. I just assumed I couldn't as the previous places in that forest had only paths in the 4 directions.
-Oh okay, I got that now.
-Does it appear after lighting up all the candles?

I got another candle from the pool, figured I needed to wear the inner tube. So now I need 1 more candle. Got all the accessories. Need just 1 more outfit.
Okay, for full reference, here's the candle locations:

1. The balcony at the top of harpy tower
2. A room at the end of the looping caves
3. Behind the seer
4. After getting the alraune costume, go to the gardener in the top-left corner of the enclosed garden.
5. Follow the secret path in the pillar hall until you hear a sound, then , go back the window-flanked door.
6. Get your way into the pool building.
7 and 8. These are sidequest ones so just look around for those.

As for an update: I'll get around to that when halloween 2022 rolls around.

I think I have got all expect the pillar hall one. What secret path is that? I keep hearing sounds at many tiles. Although I noticed entering the other room in that path while wearing harpy or norn's outfit leads to different locations (I already visited before) than the one it normally leads to. Nothing happens when I go back to the window-flanked door though.

Someone in the castle talks about the path in a hopefully obvious way. Follow that path until an explosion sound effect goes off, then go through the window-bordered door.
