Exceeded my expectations

Overview:

Tried this out simply because I liked the music samples and ended up getting a little more invested than I planned to, but I definitely don't regret it. Overall I went in with fairly low expectations and found myself enjoying the game quite a bit. The maps were done well, music compliments the locations extremely well, and the dialogue was really good. This follows the same template as the Persona games and Undertale where your choices in battle change how the story plays out.

The Story:

When you start the game you're greeted through a radio transmission essentially begging you to help keep the character, Wentz, alive as he's the supposed catalyst in stopping the IronE from causing chaos through in the Cryoud Region. Now, I didn't think much of this scene since most games have an opening similar to this style.

It had me choose whether or not I wanted to help and I assumed this was one of those false choice moments, so I went and said no to see what would happen and the game closed on me. I booted it back up partially annoyed thinking that I'd have to go through the whole tutorial again, but this was when the game hit me with an "Undertale Moment" for lack of a better term.

The character sending the transmission begins having a panic attack about how they feel like they met me, but says how that wouldn't make sense since in their eyes, they're calling for the first time. They even recalled what my name was despite the game not openly saving it from what I can see. Fortunately, I didn't have to go through any of the tutorial which was a huge relief!

The first battle does a decent job at showing how oblivious Wentz can be when he overreacts to a soft server being sent to him, resulting in the battle being a misunderstanding. Afterwards, assuming you don't kill it, you get to add the soft server to your party, as well as being able to give it a nickname which is set to Chilly by default!

The game goes into a deeper moment where you learn that a father who works for the IronE leaves home to go on a "business trip" and soon stops calling home. That's pretty much all the information you're given until later on in the demo while you're trying to save Fois Town Towers from the IronE's assault.

Graphics

This game uses FinalBossBlues's Time Fantasy tilesets/sprites along with the RPG Maker DS sprites. The two blend together almost seamlessly. The facesets are custom done which gives the game a more original feel in contrast to using the character generator like most other RM games. It gives me slight Amazing World of Gumball vibes with the diverse sizes and sprites used to create the characters and various NPCs. Overall a very colorful game!

Final Words

Being this is just a demo, this game as so much potential. The attention to detail, the dialogue, and the world building are all done incredibly well. As long as the developer keeps this same attention going forward, this game could do very well! I've never been one to take the time to write a review, but this game definitely exceeded my expectations! I also watched old "First Impression" videos from a few RM content creators and seeing what this game was before compared to what it is now is remarkable. Not a perfect game by any means, though! The battle system took some getting used to with the Arrow Battles giving me more trouble than it should have, but I can see how much care and attention was put into this game and hopefully the dev continues on this track!
