Sacred Reviews: It Came From the Drain

Intro

"It Came From the Drain" is a short horror/survival game developed by MacShift using RPG Maker MV that was intended to be an entry in the Theme Roulette 4 event. Unfortunately this game wasn't finished in time despite being rather short. Seriously, it takes under 10 minutes to beat this game.

Story

You play as Joanna, a new home owner, whose recently moved into a house she bought for cheap. Though, I suppose the low cost of the house is pretty easy to understand considering we find ourselves getting attacked by the hair clog from hell when we start brushing our teeth before bed. To make matters worse while the monster is really stupid and never catches onto our few hiding spots in the house. It was still smart enough to block the exits with goop so we have no way to escape. And we didn't label our boxes before moving in. So were going to have to check pretty much all of them to find the tools we'll need to fight back and send this hair clog back to hell where it belongs.

Gameplay

You can run around the house, but this will cause loose floorboards to creak and alert the monster to your rough whereabouts in the house. So it's far more useful to walk after you've given the monster the slip for the first time so you don't have to worry as much about being interrupted as you look for items you'll need to defeat it. Though I wouldn't worry about this that much since there are at least two hiding spots in the house you can use to loose the monster. Albeit these hiding spots working multiple times really brings the monster's competence into question. Or at least begs the question of how this thing hunts if hiding in a basket of clothes is a enough to trick it.

Bug

If you rush for the chest containing the lighter in the basement you can actually open it before the monster arrives, but then your powerless to move as the game explains how to use the lighter in conjunction with some hairspray to defeat the monster. And while your hopelessly stuck the monster can still move and take the player out. Thankfully this isn't a game breaking issue since you can simply run away and return to the basement later in order to avoid getting caught when you claim the lighter.

You can also avoid this game over by rapidly pressing the button to speed through the dialogue but you'll probably miss out on how to use your weapon if you do so since most people wouldn't guess to use the page down key to attack.

Graphics and Sound

I'd say both of these aspects of the game are alright in my opinion with the maps being decent, but nothing spectacular. Though at least the maps don't feel needlessly crowded like some other games I've played over the years. And while the background music while the monster is hunting you is a bit unnerving. I'm pretty sure I've heard it played in other projects a few times at this point.

Conclusion

While this game didn't meet the deadline for the Theme Roulette 4 event. It still feels like an event game as such I'm going to be a little less strict when it comes to grading this one, but considering how short this game is it's probably worth a play for those looking for a quick game to beat and review even if horror games really aren't their cup of tea.

Thank you for the review! You make a good point about the monster being a little too dumb; once you know at least one of the places you can go, the game doesn't feel nearly as challenging.

As for that bug in the basement, I can't believe I missed that! (Actually, I had intended for it to be impossible to get the lighter before that chase.) I'll have to go in and take care of it.

By the way, making the floorboards creak was just something I added for ambience, but now that you mention it, having it influence the monster's awareness of your location would've been cool!
