Sacred Reviews: The Geterix Legacy

Intro

"The Geterix Legacy" is an adventure game developed by Delsin7 and Red_Nova for the Swap in 3 Middle with You event. An event where players would build half of a game and then hand it over to someone else to finish. In the case of this game it was started by Delsin7 and finished by Red_Nova. As for the game itself it follows the misadventure of a sarcastic fairy and a naive alchemist apprentice. A story that potentially lays the groundwork for a future sequel. Or maybe Delsin7 and Red_Nova are merely baiting the audience with the expectation of a sequel much like "The Last Starfighter (1984)".

Story

You play as Meurig an alchemist apprentice whose been out in the woods for the last two weeks cataloguing flora and fauna for your master. A task that almost gets Meurig cursed when he tries to sniff a fairy like some sort of weird pervert.

Though it looks like she's far more afraid of getting put into a bottle like one of those nameless fairies in "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time". Though apparently she isn't that afraid since this fairy has quite the mouth on her.

Thankfully this sarcastic fairy who claims her name is Trixie decides to follow us since it looks like evil is afoot since the Institute were studying at and the nearby warden's office are in shambles when we get back. And in order to solve what has happened here and why will take some fairy and alchemist know how.

Though which of the game's two endings would be considered the good ending is a toss up in my opinion. In one ending the Earth is basically sucked dry of all of it's magic as vines spread all over the Earth in a bid to restrain a fallen God. In the other ending the Earth is restored, but it's only a matter of time before the fallen God awakens and once more unleashes utter chaos upon the world. I suppose it's a question of if you want to die slowly or quickly in this one. At least that's my interpretation. Though, I suppose the journey ending could be followed up someday with the player managing to slay the fallen God using a combination of alchemy and fairy magic. Or have the player go on a journey to seal the fallen God using a new process that is less damaging to the Earth.

Gameplay

Outside of a few simple block pushing puzzles the game also allows the player to interact with objects in various ways. These methods are listed on the right side of your screen when you interact with an object of interest.

These options include the look command which allows you to study the object. The talk command which allows you to talk to an object. Albeit this command doesn't get much use since most of the people you'll come across in this game are already dead and their flesh has long since been stripped away by magic vines. You can also touch an object in order to get more details about it. Though I'll admit the bulk of the objects I used this command on were corpses in order to look for potentially useful objects. You can also use the take command to take something which is really useful since you'll need to take a lot of ingredients with you if you want to make certain items in this game. You can also use the use command which allows you to use an object in your possession on the object your interacting with. Or you can use the leave command to ignore the object or person and get back to what you were doing.

Outside of interacting with objects through the above command list. You can also create a few useful items through alchemy which is both a blessing and a curse in my opinion. This is because the alchemy system is rather involved with the player needing to follow a specific series of steps in order to make an item. And most of these recipes involve over half a dozen steps. So you'll definitely want notepad open so you can type up the recipe or if your old school like me you'll have some paper and a writing utensil to write down the recipe.
Regardless you'll definitely want to do this since one of the recipes only gives you a single chance to complete it properly and if you screw up it's game over. Though the player is given ample warning about this. So you can always reload if you drop a save before you attempt the recipe.

Graphics and Sound

As far as I can tell the bulk of the objects, sprites, and music in this game are all from the RTP. To be fair this is an event entry so my expectations are a lot lower. After all, the whole point of events on this site is to have some fun and make some rather cringe games every now and again like "WWF vs WWF".

Conclusion

"The Geterix Legacy" is a rather short adventure game that can probably be beaten by most people in under 60 minutes on their first attempt. Admittedly my first run through this game might be longer than most since it took me a while to realize I needed to talk with Trixie about the poisoned well in order to cleanse it using a plant ingredient I had found nearby. I imagine my run would have been a good ten minutes shorter if I hadn't wasted so much time looking for other options after trying the plant on the well myself had failed. Though after that it was pretty smooth sailing since most of the challenges in this game are pretty easy to overcome once you understand how everything works. So if your looking for a casual adventure game this is definitely worth a look, but if your looking for something that will really tweak your nose and force you to think outside of the box you'll need to look elsewhere.

Thanks for the review, lobo! I'm glad you liked it. As for a sequel expectation, I didn't really plan to do anything else with this game after the event, but I didn't have time to sit down and resolve all the plot points that were brought up in the first half. That's why I left the endings more open so players can draw their own conclusions on how the story plays out from there.

Still, though. I'm glad you liked what was here. Writing banter between Meurig and Trixie was my favorite part of taking over the project.
