Sacred Reviews: witch2.rpg

Intro

"Witch2.rpg" was developed by Fee_Nicks using OHRRPGCE and serves as a sequel to
"Witch.rpg" albeit the inclusion of RPG in the title of this project feels rather misleading. This is because "Witch2.rpg" isn't a turn-based role-playing game like the first entry. If anything this feels like a spin-off since it's an entirely different kind of animals in terms of it's genre. Though, I'd say the biggest obstacle most people will experience is getting this game to run. So before I discuss the story or gameplay I should probably explain what you need to do to play this game.

How to make this Game Work

In order to make this game work you'll need to download a 32-bit version of the SDL2.dll file from dll-files.com. I really wish I had a better option for you but that's definitely the fastest method outside of looking for another game made with OHRRPGCE on this site that has the needed dll file. And if your thinking of tapping the first game for this file. Your wasting your time since I've got a copy of that on one of my thumb drives and already checked if it contained a copy of the SDL2.dll file. And if you think you can change the name of the SDL.dll file to SDL2.dll and get the game to work than your also wrong. I actually tested that and it gave me an error message for my trouble. So you definitely need a legitimate copy of a 32-bit version of the SDL2.dll file.

After you've obtained the missing .dll file and added it to the game's main folder. You'll need to change the name of the SDL_mixer.dll file to SDL2_mixer.dll. Why changing the name of this file works while it fails for the other one is beyond me. At any rate after you've completed the name change the game will launch and play just fine.

Story

You play as Carmilla, a vampire, whose outfits and summoning candles have all been stolen/misplaced by one of your attendants. So if you truly want to make this Halloween special you'll need to get all of your stuff back as well as perform a summoning ritual to achieve your ultimate goal for this most unholy of nights.

Gameplay

For the most part you'll spend your time walking around looking for items and talking to people in order to get clues for various puzzles as well as gain access to a few side quests you'll need to complete for summoning candles and accessories. Though a lot of the best clues are held in the hands of witches who'll only give you valuable information if you look like your one of them. So you'll definitely need to change outfits a few times over the course of the game in order to solve certain puzzles.

Albeit the game always gives the player the option of ending the game at any time by trying to leave the castle. And the only advantage of collecting every outfit and accessory is being told that you have "perfect fashion". So how long this game takes to beat depends on how much time and energy your willing to commit to side quests involving delivering various items and searching for hidden rooms as well as passageways.

Graphics

Graphically the game is pretty solid. At least it looks better than some other OHRRPGCE games I've played over the years like "Ruin". Albeit that game is now being sold on steam under a new name. I assume it's the original developer considering they made the game inaccessible on RMN.

And you can definitely see the results of mixing and matching various outfits and different types of accessories. Albeit certain combos are definitely more appealing than others. And these combos influence the appearance of your sprite as well. Albeit the drawing that pops up on your menu doesn't update until after you've opened the window again after you've changed your outfit.

Though, I do have one minor gripe. When Carmilla is facing sideways her sprite looks like it has a beard.

Obviously were seeing part of her long hair here, but that's hard to see unless your looking at the game super close up. I suppose it might have looked a bit better if I was playing the game in fullscreen mode, but I prefer to record stuff in windowed mode when I can help it. This is because my capture software sometimes doesn't interlace with games properly when they are in fullscreen mode. So it's just better to do this sort stuff in windowed mode if possible in my experience.

Sound

Well as mentioned on the game's summary page the game shamelessly uses tracks that were blatantly stolen from the Vyacheslav Mescherin orchestra. Admittedly this practice is pretty common on this site. Albeit the targets are usually tracks from old video games from the SNES era in my experience. And as long as this isn't a commercial project I'm willing to look the other way. As far as the music goes its relaxing for the most part albeit certain tracks started to get on my nerves after a while. Though, I'll admit I was getting a bit grumpy about my efforts to find a few accessories, outfits, and candles that I was missing at the time. So I was sort of looking for something to gripe about.

Conclusion

If your looking for a game where you can mix and match outfits and solve a few puzzles that require you to use the powers of certain outfits and accessories to your advantage than this might just be the game for you. For others this can be a rather frustrating experience as you struggle to navigate the castle in search of the 16 outfits, 16 accessories, and 8 summoning candles. If anything your ability to enjoy this game will probably boil down to how much you like hidden object games. A genre that I'm not particularly fond of so I would recommend taking my review score with a pinch of salt.
