"Deep within the Confined Isle in the depths of the Ebony Labyrinth, sleeps something so wondrous that people must not disturb it".

Thus is written the sole passage in the Book of Counsel.
The rest of the pages are blank...

You find yourself in a bed as you begin to regain consciousness.
The girl standing next to the bed, who has tended to your wounds since discovering you unconscious by the shore, is relieved to see you awaken.
She introduces herself as Iris. She runs a pharmacy on the island.

Your memory is foggy, however. You don't know why you're here, or what you should be doing...
Inside the bag you had on you, your only possessions are an unusually shaped crystal, a dagger,
and a mysterious book.

How you came here, your purpose, the fabled Ebony Labyrinth, and the mystery of what exactly is said to be resting deep underneath the Confined Isle...

All of it can only be ascertained by your power alone.

Nepheshel is a freeware RPG created by the doujin circle Studio Til with an emphasis on dungeon exploration.
Set on the isolated Confined Isle, the protagonist has washed ashore from the ocean, unable to remember anything about themselves except for their name. The island is said to be plagued by a powerful curse, causing all who dare to enter or leave to completely lose their memories, making escape exceptionally difficult if not outright impossible.

Many of the dungeons are intricate, with some having connections deep underground. At times, it may be necessary to go through one dungeon in order to enter or fully explore another. The enigmatic monoliths known as "Gates" scattered roundabout the island, can prove instrumental in your journey by warping you to and from the depths of dungeons you have visited.

Players are not locked onto any one-way paths, with hardly any obstacles before them, thereby granting them a very high degree of freedom as to where they wish to explore.

Additionally, every enemy is displayed on the field with no random encounters, which means navigating dungeons can be a breeze by simply running past strong enemies. If you get caught however, there's no guarantee you'll be able to get away alive...

Use your power to the fullest, and do all that you can to find the truth.

Nice! This is awesome to see! I hear this is one of the most well-known RPG Maker games in Japan and I'm excited to finally be able to give it a try.
Thank you so much for the translation! I was first introduced to Nepheshel through its soundtrack--it's really great. I'm glad many will be able to experience the game now for the first time!
EDITED 2: FOUND THE PROBLEM! I downloaded and ran the RPG Maker 2000 RTP installation .exe and it worked! Which is very bizarre to me as I know I have played RPG Maker 2000 games on this computer before and I think I recall installing it, but maybe those didn't need the RTP? Or I had other version of the RTP (maybe I am confusing 2003 with 2000 games, I dunno)? But now I can play the game no problem. Sorry for the trouble, it feels pretty stupid asking and shortly after finding the problem on my own haha. Disregard the rest of this comment, and let me use this opportunity for thanking you for the translation!

Hello,

I was interested in trying this game and it seems I found some kind of bug that makes it so the game cannot play the intro properly. As I haven't been able to find any contact info on the translation author, I decided to post the error here in hopes they see it.

This is the error message I get:

(If the image doesn't show, the error is "Cannot open file People1")

I could not find any such file in the Data folder, so it seems it might be a problem with a missing file on the download? By selecting "Skip the intro", it is possible to start the game without watching the intro cutscene and it seems to be working fine, but I only tried for a moment (didn't leave the house) and I don't know if that missing file could generate more problems past the intro.

EDIT: I tried leaving the house after skipping the intro and got the same error. Seems the graphics for the townspeople are missing, probably?

Got the same error installed the rtp and works perfectly, when a game is as small as this one it means that you need the rtp.
Any pointers about miscellaneous things? Like hunting the Koos and missable things?

Any pointers about miscellaneous things? Like hunting the Koos and missable things?

- Hunting Koos comes down to lady luck. Well, for the most part.
- Take time to re-explore, you could discover something new.
- Dungeons and chests aren't the only things that keep secrets.
Whoa, this JUST showed up on buzzing games for me. I was aware of this game, but had no idea it was already translated, and for almost a whole year already. How the hell did I miss this?
(This text was translated by DeepL. I am a Japanese player.)

I was playing this game in Win11 environment, and suddenly one day I could not start it. Specifically, before the title screen appears, the program is forced to terminate with an error.
I found a solution to this problem, and I will write about it here.

The solution is to delete "winmm.dll" in the "Data" folder. This is all.

Additional information
The "winmm.dll" was originally introduced by the author to solve a problem caused by an error while launching the game. The reason for this was to solve the error "If the BGM stops playing while playing the game, saving the game will destroy the saved data.
This error was known in the Japanese version as of 2002, and the history of the error was saved as of 2022/10/15 (2022/1/1 in the Japanese version).
And since "winmm.dll" will be removed this time, the above error may occur when you play. However, I have never encountered the above error in several hours of playing. I have played this game many times around 2002. In other words, if you save often, and shut down promptly when you no longer hear the background music, you should be able to play without any problems.

By the way, I think we should refrain from asking the author to address this issue.
There are two reasons.
1. It is not a symptom that occurs at least to all Win11 users, and it has not been confirmed outside of Win11 (I have confirmed that the problem described at the beginning of this article does not occur in Win10 environments).
2. The cause of the error is contained in the development environment, RPG MAKER, and is not something that the author should deal with.

Thank you for reading.
Sounds decent. Though some of these graphics are not too good. -_- The curses of being an artist. I do wanna check out this game.

Maybe I can be a cool guy and help out, and rock out with some nice facesets. I'd have to see what could make the game rock. I am an artist. :)
