Story

According to one theory, Earth's moon was formed by collision with another planetoid early in our solar system's history. This theoretical planetoid is known as Theia, the mother of Selene (the moon) in early Hellene mythology.

The theory states that Theia would have been completely consumed in the collision, its mass integrated with Earth's.

Why, then, in the outer reaches of the Oort cloud, where astronomers expect to find only comets and isolated bodies of ice, has a planet been found whose composition exactly compliments planet Theia of the Giant Impact theory? Almost a light-year away from the Sun, it hangs on by a mere slip of a gravitational tether, and would certainly have been long lost to the system were its orbit not almost immeasurably slow.

Wherever it came from, it was the last beacon of hope for White Horse Enterprises, a sluggish corporation whose dewy-eyed business ethics made it uncompetitive in the corrupt, overpopulated world of 2072. They established a mining facility on Planet Theia as a showcase for their progressive, philanthropic business practices. In the words of White Horse's CEO: "This venture will go forward, and it will establish a precedent that only an act of God can supersede."

The venture seemed doomed for bankruptcy until a survey drone uncovered what appeared to be an alien artifact, deep under the planet's surface. Desperately needing to capitalize on the discovery, the admins have planned an investor's gala in the P. Lowell Executive Chalet, a small luxury resort with a stunning view of the mining installation, where the artifact will be unveiled to the public.

... And now, for some reason, you've just woken up on the floor of your sleep quarters. You have no recollection of the last week, and your co-workers have turned into monsters. Your only guidance is a droning automated announcement system and the clues your colleagues left behind before losing their minds.

Welcome to Planet Theia. It's always dark out.

My god we're going back for this one

Two days ago I finally started using Rogaine, even though I'm about 15 years too late for it to make a difference!

Well we all know how it goes, I still want to shake the usual farts out of the bedsheets and say that sOmEdAy ThIs PrOjEcT wIlL bE dOnE i PrOmIsE but it looks to be something that I'll have to be toying with on and off for years and maybe finish it when I'm 50. Because I was visited by that terrible spectre of Another Idea For A Game That Seems Like It Will Be Less Work And More Likely To Pay Off Than The Current Idea (AIFAGTSLIWBLWAMLTPOTTCI). I've actually been working on the AIFAGTSLIWBLWAMLTPOTTCI for the last year. I don't want to be an idiot who strings along projects for years and then never finishes anything because of yet another AIFAGTSLIWBLWAMLTPOTTCI, with the old tune of i'Ll GeT bAcK tO tHiS pRoJeCt OnCe ThE nEw OtHeR iDeA iS dOnE. Every time I do this I lose more and more confidence in myself. But the AIFAGTSLIWBLWAMLTPOTTCI can be very seductive.

The latest AIFAGTSLIWBLWAMLTPOTTCI is a furry-themed building management sim made in Game Maker, and the building that you're managing is a public bathroom. You place facilities like toilets and sinks and make money by selling different types of septic effluent. It leans heavily on the vulgar subject matter, because furries like that sort of thing. But it's not really an RPG so I don't want to make a project page here. Does anyone know of another website where I might make a project page for that sort of game?

It's a nicely detailed game. I can't imagine the time it took to create this. Unfortunately, due to my short attention span, I don't have the patience to learn the controls. I did make the attempt, though, and even if I can't push myself to play further I'm sure there are a lot of people willing to try.
I was really really enjoying this but it was really unstable and kinda buggy. I had to stop playing because the game crashed (after the first security camera event happens - a NilClass something or other?) and also I kept getting non-gamebreaking error messages about "calling a blank sidebar" or something, this happened pretty often. Also I think some of the inventory stuff is a little broken, I could carry a two-box shotgun with one box.

Other non-terrible but comment worthy things are as follows (more of a game-testing point of view, nothing too important I suppose):

* Movement speed I can almost deal with, but in combat it's a real pain to have the character walk back to their default position so painfully slowly and turning their back away from the target just seems really wrong.
* It would be good if all item-based options were available in all iterations of their appearance, for example, being able to examine items without picking them up... Maybe I wanna know what they do before I discard something to make room for them :P ALSO - Consumables having the option to be consumed immediately rather than inventory-ing them first of all would be great.
* Free-trade between all inventories would be much better than having to empty and inventory slot, switch characters, open their inventory and then give something to the other. It would make more sense to have all trading/dropping/equipping do-able from one screen with the ability to go between each character's inventory freely. (and perhaps the ability to deposit items back into specific places for storage)
* I noticed a couple spelling mistakes :P
* Same goes for upgrading skills, the ability to switch characters mid-menu would make this game a lot smoother. EXP costs didn't seem to show up when purchasing levels.
* Some items look kinda bad upon dropping them, for instance I dropped a pencil to pick up the wrench and it left what would have to be a 2ft-long pencil on the floor if this was real life :P
* Number keypad numbers didn't show up upon pressing the buttons, and there's no enter key and I had to put 44444 (five 4's) for the passcode to work (and I think the code was meant to be four 4's?) Also.. The keypad looks bad next to the polish of the rest of the game, imo.
* Sometimes say, a desk/crate etc's contents box would overlap with my player's inventory screen which obscured things a little.
* WHAT IF I WANNA PLAY AS A GIRL, HUH?

Aside from that nitpicky stuff and the crashing this is probably one of the coolest RM games I've ever played and I'd really love to play more of it. I could see me getting really into it if it were just a little bit smoother and more intuitive.

Anyway I really hope you continue with this and if you need a tester later down the line I'd be happy to test the crap out of it so long as I've got the time :)

Aaahhhh!! Bug reports make me want to hide under the bed, but I know I must face them. Thanks for the suggestomends, several of them are all ready planned in fact. :3 But I don't release new versions very often.
was fun for awhile, then it crashed. I also had problems with repeated "calling blank sidebar"

Oh yeah, the high miss rate for guns was pretty annoying too. I think I shot at one of the cameras 18 times before htting it once, was a lot of wasted ammo.
Set Discrepancy had a better ring to it...

Perhaps this should go to vote. I agree with kenton.

I'd like to understand what each title *means* to the author.
Set Discrepancy just rolls nicely off the tongue. It also has a greater mystery surrounding it than just "Discrepancy". It's a "Set Discrepancy" - does that mean it was intentionally done (ie- set up?), or is there a certain set of objects that contains a discrepancy? Or is it like a stage set, with some allegory to existence being a stage in some existential play?

Also, set - what a strange word. set set set set set S-E-T. set.

HUH. INTERESTING.
Well "Set Discrepancy" was meant to suggest the "odd one out" of a set, but it just started striking me as a very weird and unnatural phrase that no one would ever use.
IF IT MEANS THAT MUCH TO YOU I MAY CHANGE IT BACK. MAYBE. I LOVE THIS COMMUNITY.

Hey, I tried running this but the game gave me some error about not being able to access a font that was needed... so then I ran it as an administrator and in compatibility mode, and the game simply froze and didn't do anything. Do I need to install something special to play XP games?

I don't know how to drop items?, In small, because I feel really stupid for it.

I used some special code in the program that is supposed to install the required font the first time you run the program. Unfortunately this code was not developed by me so I don't know all the ins and outs of it. In the "Fonts" directly with the game is a font called "AdventureSubtitles", try installing this manually on your computer and see if that works ...

Press Z to open your inventory, select the item and choose 'Drop'.

Did you change the name to Set Discrepancy? I was sure this was called just Discrepancy.

Heh.

Had this error come up when choosing to move south from the Atrium ( In Part 2 - first place you see trees, then choosing to move down rather than right). Started another play-through of this today. Managed to repair a shotgun (finally!).

Rambling play-through notes here:
A strange thing happened whilst managing items so I could unload a broken shotgun to load up the fixed one and then pass the loaded, fixed shotgun to the guy with a good wield stat. Somehow the broken shotgun went from having 2 rounds, then being unloaded, then somehow whilst messing around with passing shotguns and shells between people the broken shotgun managed to reload itself back up to full capacity (these were NEW shells out of nowhere, rather than ones I had already unloaded, thanks for the free ammo). So anyway I unloaded the broken shotgun again and ended up with 4 extra shells out of thin air.

Also I was thinking, have you considered offering mouse support for this :D I know some pretty good mouse support scripts exist out there somewhere, maybe for VX only though, I wouldn't know myself.

Edit: So I just loaded up the game and found out that somehow the game actually fixed both the shotguns. I should have picked up six and fixed them all for the price of one :D - Also why do most enemies carry multiple shotguns, seems kinda odd.

Also sometimes "Give" allows you to look around the room at things such as crates and desks and corpses (leading to me to believe you can deposit items into desks, crates etc, which would make a lot of sense and be a good feature to have - But sometimes it doesn't let this happen, also sometimes it will let you look at other items until you land on a player character and then it will lock on to them and not allow you to look at other things with the "give" command... Kind weird and inconsistent)

Also alcohol should lower accuracy :3

Edit again - When attempting to use one of these shotguns in battle it says that there are no shells loaded despite displaying "4" on the icon (in fact it turns out both/all my shotguns keep saying this regardless of which one - the original or the duplicate fix)

Also "has_talents_hack" and the like seem to turn up in some requirement lists instead of the correct in-game terminology, also "the cocktail party" comes up as "/the cocktail party" dunno if that's intentional.

One thing that's kinda annoying is using ammo up on a turn where the enemy is going to drop dead on the next turn regardless of whether I hit them again or not. I've seen this sort of "everyone gets to complete a turn regardless of if you've killed the enemy already" sort of thing in some board games but they don't usually factor in ammo consumption. I think for a video game it'd be nicer if the enemies just dropped dead when their HP reaches zero so you know not to bother targeting them anymore.

Derichard does more damage with a wrench than a standard bullet does against a soft target, this upsets me. I don't care how strong you are - ballistics is ballistics :<

My Derichard died and when inspecting the body it says (this is verbatim, with the same formatting): "This character has died. To revive her, use a recovery item on herbody, or wait for her to be collected by the bio-recovery system." - Isn't he a dude? :P - Also he appears to be dead ,standing up, with his eyes open. This irradiated area is incredibly hard, I've got through so many items and anti-radiation needles and am seriously running out of money and resources to keep my guys alive when they're being barraged by radiation and enemy encounters constantly. :< - Also there seems to be some sort of graphical error on the bars which say "alert/radiation" above the character portraits.

Had this one come up whilst attempting to get from where Derichard died (the room the with ops control panel) to the recovery tube, the error happened on the screen with the broken conduit between those two locations as my character entered the screen.

All this aside, I'm really enjoying this project and hope you finish it :>
