Sacred Reviews: Corporal Buggy Bear

Intro

"Corporal Buggy Bear" is a comedy/adventure game developed by Mewd using RPG Maker XP whose comedy is rather hit or miss in my opinion. If you enjoy the game's comedic approach you'll probably enjoy it long enough to complete it. If your like me and find the game utterly lacking in terms of quality jokes than your probably going to give up on this one at some point since the game just drags on for over two hours and if I wanted to torture myself with a bad comedy experience I'd go watch "Ghostbusters" (2016) or "Howard the Duck" (1986).

Story/Comedy
Summary
The comedy in "Corporal Buggy Bear" is largely derived from the cast being really stupid with the main focus being on Corporal Buggy Bear's whose assigned to stop an entire peasant revolt on his own since he's the worst tennis player in King Lugnut's army. A king who believes he should only send one shitty tennis player to deal with this issue since there's a big tennis tournament coming up tomorrow and he can't afford for his best players to be tired.

At any rate after heading off to deal with the revolting peasants it turns out there being pushed to overthrow the tyrannical and idiotic king of the country by a demon. A demon that's a massive crybaby whose bitter about the girl he loves hitting him with a restraining order and thinking he's an absolute wuss that isn't worthy of her attention. Admittedly he did breakdown crying after we hit him once. So he really is a pathetic excuse for a demon, but beating up the weak isn't the way of our people so we agree to team up with him to win the affection of his love interest by bribing her with presents. Presents we afford by slaying giant squids and winning races against chickens that are simply immune to the lethal tracks dotting the race track. Unfortunately it seems she's super picky and finds all of our gifts rather worthless for one reason or another so she banishes us to Dimension W or Dimension Wuss as I'd call it since everyone there is just as much of a crybaby as the demon we met that was leading the peasant revolt. At least the one demon leader there I did meet since I gave up after collecting the first of four crystals.

Comedy

The jokes in "Corporal Buggy Bear" are almost entirely derived from everything going on in the game being really stupid and nonsensical. Unfortunately this just makes for a game that is really annoying to play in my opinion since a decent chunk of the dumb jokes you'll see coming from a mile away since the basis for the joke is so old it makes those dated jokes about Chuck Norris's tears being able to cure cancer seem fresh in comparison. Add in the fact the game is super in your face about it's dumb jokes and it just becomes unbearable to play if you hate the game's comedic style.

Gameplay

Outside of walking around the player will spend the bulk of their time doing standard adventure game stuff like solving puzzles or interacting with various NPCs for leads on what to do next. For the puzzles they range from finding the best path through an obstacle course to block pushing puzzles. So basically it has all of the standard stuff you'd expect. It's just the reason your racing a chicken is utterly stupid since your trying to earn money to buy someone's girlfriend a band saw.

Graphics and Sound

Graphically and sound wise the game appears to be comprised entirely of assets contained within the RTP for RPG Maker XP. At least that appears to be the case from what I've seen during the 90 minutes I spent playing this game. As a result this game really doesn't have anything going for or against it in these categories.

Conclusion

Comedy games are some of the worst to review in my opinion since comedy is so subjective. As a result I'm going to recommend for or against this game. After all while I find this game a boring chore that isn't worth finishing. There are other people that love this game for the utter nonsense that pops up at times like the king's throne room just randomly being full of cats or that a demon overlord would challenge the player to a game of chess in order to settle a dispute in a peaceful manner.
