- Story -

The story centers around a woman named Rebecca. She visits the cell of Lynn, her ex-captain, and tells her that she will be executed tomorrow morning by none other than Rebecca herself. To comfort the dumbstruck Lynn, Rebecca tells a story of her past, a past she is not exactly happy to share.

19 year-old Rebecca narrates her story while you play as her 15-year old self.

- World -

In the world of Azriel, humans have long exhausted oil as a resource. The world was close to a global panic, when finally, a new resource, a resource phenomenally better than oil, electricity, or any resource we use in our everyday lives, is discovered. This resource was called Valmite. Valmite was a special material that had been accumulating underground for thousands of years. The four major countries of the world had taken advantage of the Valmite's power and excavated almost every Valmite site in existence. Azriel is now a highly advanced civilization, with technology that can surpass anyone's imagination.

Now, only a single Valmite site remains. Dubbed the Valmite Mines, an all-out war broke out for ownership of these mines. Though the war ended with a truce, it did not last for long. Sekai, the country that proposed the truce in the first place had broken it, and now war is occurring once more with only two of the four main countries participating this time. Those countries are Avalon and Sekai.

As Rebecca, you will NOT be participating in this war. In fact, you will be trying to escape it.

- Gameplay -

Battles are fast-paced thanks to ziifee's Spin Wait Gauge System. The twist is, the enemy is the one who has to wait in order to attack. You, the player however, do not. Once your gauge fills up at the start of battle, it will not go down even after performing an attack. You will be able to line up attacks one after another. Sound easy? It is in fact, NOT. Your lack of waiting does not mean you can go trigger happy. Enemies may take a while to attack you, but they hit HARD, so you must make sure to activate your Barrier (Defend) in order to lessen damage. When you are sure the enemy is finished attacking, hit them back! Then defend...then hit back! It's a rinse and repeat process, but it keeps you on your toes, especially when mobs increase in quantity. Keep in mind that when "Barrier" is selected in battle, it will activate the second you hit that button. The command menu will appear again, but you will still be in Defense mode until you use an item, or attack. Once you use an item or attack, you will have to select Barrier again to defend.

You are SOLO in battle at all times, but no worries. You will learn skills such as Disable in order to make your battles a little more manageable.

There is a Generator in your inventory that functions as a mobile shop. You can buy and sell items easily just by going into your menu screen instead of going to a shop every time.

The word "Alpha" is in the title because it is a prequel to a dream game I am designing called "devil Theory." I don't have plans to actually make devil Theory with RPG Maker, I hope to see this game make it to the PS3 and Xbox 360 or possibly a next-gen system. I'm a designer you see, ^^.

Added new download link!

I apologize for not updating the download link in so long. This game is super important to me, yet it was only today I decided to check it out again, and I see more people actually checked it out! So, I have added a fresh download link for everyone to enjoy. The game itself has not been updated (nor will it ever be), but the original download has been cut in half, so no more 200+ MB download. If there are any more problems, please let me know.

Yes, that's what I've been waiting for.
Solo RPGs FTW!
A couple of game-ending bugs: I'm getting something about a null stack while cruising around the menu. I don't know what that means, but it kicks me straight out of the game before I can save.

Also, when I go get the herbs for the guy in town, Rebecca says something like "Off he goes again" and it loops forever.

I like the battle system, the repeat attacks definitely speed up the system. Some parts of the game run pretty slowly on my average-level comp. Maybe the amount of light-overlays.
I can never understand why I never get the "null stack" error while everyone else does. I have no idea how to solve it. Thanks for mentioning that you're getting the errors though, I have to look further into this.

gah, I never took care of that loop for that sidequest, thanks for reminding me. In fact, most of the sidequests have not been thoroughly tested yet, just a heads up.

Glad to know you like the battle system, I tried to make it fast, but also emphasize the Guard Command. I'll be playing your game soon, I'm a little pre-occupied with some work at the moment.
I can't review your game until you submit a download. Want me to just review it here in the comments?
that's fine, thank you very much ^^
Review for "Devil Theory: Alpha"

200+ MB is a whopping download for most on RM.net, but Devil Theory: Alpha has a lot going for it that is definitely worth a look. With a little trimming to file size, this could get to be a popular project. I'll break it down by section:

Graphics - 6.5/10

RMVX isn't the maker I work with, so I'm not experienced enough to say what was custom and what was RTP, but it was consistent and fit the scenes well enough. Some areas clearly had a lot of thought put into them (e.g. the towns especially, Dolce and Sol look very nicely done and contrast with each other). Other areas were not so well thought out, and just served as straight paths to make the trip from one place to another longer and more boring. The first room of the skeleton dungeon is a good example of this.

No huge graphical flaws or parts that seemed particularly out of place. Monster graphics looked good, battle animations were pretty standard, light effects were present and complimentary in most scenes. So this gets a decent score.

Gameplay - 7.5/10

This game uses an interesting mechanic to get around the button-mashing tedium. Instead of getting put back in a queue with enemies after an action, the lone heroine may continue to attack again and again while only enemies have to wait to strike. The obvious advantage this gives the player is counter-balanced with hordes of enemies that attack every turn. This allows the player to attack and defend at opportune moments.

That said, the amount of variety in the skill set seemed to be lacking. The only skills I ever used were disable (of great importance while tackling massive hordes) and those super skills that require no VP (the creator's substitute for MP). The attack down and defense down abilities yielded no tangible result and I couldn't really notice a significant difference in the elemental attacks, so I stuck with fire the entire time. Even the Critical Hit was only slightly more effective than normal attacks. So while it suffered at this point, at least the battles were fast-paced and I wasn't bored.

The random battles with touch encounters included was probably a little much. I'd probably prefer a completely touch encounter system, perhaps with different colored enemies to represent relative difficulty. As it was, there wasn't a single random encounter that I wasn't able to escape from on the first try, so the game was mostly touch encounter for me anyway. I was actually able to avoid a lot of fighting completely, for a reason I'll discuss in Custom Systems.

Story - 6.5/10

Rebecca is a well-defined character and I was interested in her past and future. Gabe was sort of all over the place and I felt his character was less consistent, serving mostly to guide Rebecca's development. The use of Rebecca as the narrator in the present talking about her past (the game, as far as the player is concerned) was an interesting device that allowed the player to get into Rebecca's head.

Often the player is directed to a seemingly pointless fetch-quest, which I hate, but the story elements in-between kept me interested. I found a lot of what NPCs had to say quite uninteresting, but I liked Rebecca enough (and her cryptic relationship with Lynn) to give this a decent score.

Music - 8/10 (provisional)

Yes, the music was great and suited the scenes perfectly. There was a theme for every emotion and it enhanced the story. But there is no excuse for a 200 MB file and most of the music is responsible. There were some instances were additional music was not necessary, for example, there doesn't have to be a different tune for both touch encounters and random encounters. Also, these two MP3s don't need to be different for each and every area. Making your game 200 MB is like putting up a wall between you and potential players.

Custom Systems - 6/10

I really wanted to give this a higher score, because what really kept me playing was the ability to generate items and craft weapons and armor to be synthesized. I really enjoyed being able to make new stuff out of the materials I had gathered. The problem is that there seemed to be no difference in the effect of synthesizing a fire necklace or a mystic wand. I just got more max VP. Was there a difference? There really should have been. This system is much less cool if there is no difference, and if there is one, the player should know it.

Also, so many materials were readily available, that I never really had to battle much. Synthesize a sword for attack. Boots for defense. Armor for more HP. Etc. And materials can be found in rocks and barrels that regenerate themselves, so it made ridiculously easy by the end. Also, the chance of failure of synthesizing pissed me off more than anything. Since you can save anywhere, everyone will do exactly what I did: save and restart until success. The same goes for barrels: save and restart until you get the element you need.

My suggestions:

1.) Make save only at inns and save points.
2.) Make materials more rare and 100% chance of success while synthesizing.
3.) Make sure there is a difference between synthesizing a flame sword and lighting sword and make sure the player knows what that is.

This alone would make your score an 8. But it would be 10 if you implemented number 4:

4.) Make a crafting item for skills

Just as you can generate items and craft weapons and armor, I would love to see a skill system like this. As it was leveling up, I got so many random skills at once that didn't do me any good, I hardly used any but the three I mentioned. But if I could craft skills, not only would I care enough to use them effectively, it would also allow for character customization.

Difficulty - ???

Game was almost prohibitively difficult at the beginning. I barely made it to town and was aching to stay at an inn, only to find it costs 800 credit to restore myself to full health. This problem eventually becomes trivial because a.) I collected way to many potions to ever need a full heal again, and b.) I had so much cash from converting my mountains of raw materials.

Overall: 7/10

Everything I've said before about covers it. This has a good deal of potential, so keep working at it. And please, cut the size in half at least.

Also, I was unable to talk to the guy across the counter at the tool shop. Was he important?
...This has got to be the most incredible RPG Maker game I've ever played, and that's saying something. I absolutely love it.
Drakonis...its from legend of mana? but,i dont have the same opinion!!! I didnt noticed any custom tile set but the same way the citys and dungeons and evrything was realy well made!I dont have patience to do evrything, the gameplay was top score for me!!! Because i never ever had beaten those RPG's in this site and other, this game kept me intrested and excited because of the battle system!!!I like timing battles,so much,i never have seen such a great system and the history realy made me more excited to see the end!I like the plot, and the characters, and MrWaltz, you realy should put as much musics as you want,i loved valkery profile, persona and etc... Realy loved that games, the music fired me up,because you put the musics in such nice timing, like when you speak with the sekai kid (what was his name?...Kensei!!!) that appears gabe and "becca" in the ship, only after some time the music started playing! And i realy liked that to LVup you need a strategy!Like, each food is made of 3 ingredients or less, you need 2 or more of each ingredient to make the food, people do food in order to sell thinking they will profit, but you will get 3 to 6x more Carbon selling unused ingredients, like when it reaches 7 to 9,and you CANT generate items when youre more advenced,in order to save carbon, because if you get stronger you wont need to use the items, you can buy items freely in the start though, with this strategy i owned bosses with 4 hits or less, the wel monster that blocked the water passage, before i get to him i used one muscle cherry and those grapes, and with only one strike i got 70% of his health while he couldn't give damage, other thing is,save only at inn's?!I dont like the idea,if you lose you will lose EVRYTHING YOU ACHIEVED,and thats what makes some games boring!!!And please, youre hoping to do one PS3 Devil Theory right?Well...i cant afford one PS3,sooo...Ah! Im asking to much for a PS2 version...Nevermind...just only...Dont give up in the project! I realy loved the game...Im looking forward for the game... 5Stars!

I have had this game on the shelf for who knows how long. I usually download a game that looks good and forget about it for weeks or even months before I even try it. Man, I'm glad I was in of those rare moods where I just sift through the MOUNTAINS of games to see if there are any gems! I'm not quite sure how close I am to finishing, but it can't be too far off. I'm really enjoying this game; the story is well driven and the gameplay is fast and deadly if you're not paying attention. I think I'll try to make my first review on this game (if grad school allows me to complete it...)
um the download link isn't in the downloads. where can I download the game?
where is the download link?
