Vindication is a traditional RPG created in RPG Maker 2003 over the course of more than five years. It uses a real-time battle system similar to Final Fantasy games from the SNES and PSX eras. The game is about 15-30 hours long and features several side-quests and multiple difficulty settings, with eight major playable characters.

Vindication is a constant barrage of off-the-wall comedy; a game where eccentric characters encounter absurd situations non-stop. The humor assaults the player at full-speed as the characters are assaulted by 80s style robots from the future, struck by meteors, and forced to take pity on villains who try their best to be evil but fail miserably.

But in its more serious moments, Vindication is primarily the story of one man, James Clyde. His quest for revenge against those who have wronged him rules his life, but begins to conflict with his desire to protect his daughter, while a force capable of destroying the world is left unchecked, even encouraged. It is an epic tragedy hidden within a whirlwind of wacky hijinks and terrible puns.

While unarguably a story-driven game, Vindication also strives to create a meaningful challenge for the player. Each character has a unique set of abilities which must be utilized to their fullest to overcome a variety of obstacles. Constant party changes and splits keep you on your toes and require you to come up with new battle strategies constantly, while still rewarding you for developing your team members and building your strength. On the harder difficulty setting, the game plays almost like a survival horror game, with very limited resources and no way to replenish them, forcing you to manage your items wisely in order to survive the dungeons and defeat the bosses, which are stronger and faster than usual.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

The complaints about battle frequency make me sad, because I went out of my way to add a minimum number of steps per battle, which is always at least 20 and often over 30. I was under the impression that was very reasonable, and loads better than random battles in most RM games. Was I mistaken?

Whee! Significant updates! I redid a lot of the first two hours of the game, including most of the opening cut scenes and the entire second dungeon, from scratch. This also means that the tutorial is now the first battle in the game, and that the battles are shorter and less common until you get multiple party members. Some other miscellaneous things were fixed or changed also.

Most of these changes were done directly in response to the review that was posted by Shinan two weeks ago, or to the comments people made in reply to that review. It was a pretty helpful review!

Since I finished the game, I opened up the game in RPG Maker 2003 just to peep on some stuff. Apparently Danica is not only cut playable character MAJOR SPOILERS:
There's an early version of Justin named Hikari and surprisingly, Martec.

@Nightowl: ADDITIONAL MAJOR SPOILERS (INVOLVES THE GAME'S ENDING AND DELETED SCENES):
Originally the sequence that is currently the ending of the game was to occur much sooner in the game. This would result in James being permanently removed from the team, but being replaced by Ginny. Justin would become horribly disfigured by the explosion, and Dr. Cid would transplant his brain into the body of a ten year old girl. Justin would become Hikari. Then your team would fight against the two remaining demons. Martec was planned to be a temporary party member who helped you defeat Jaran, then betrayed you and became the final boss.

However, ultimately, after creating the current ending, I couldn't mentally justify this. I looked at that scene, and it was suddenly clear to me that this was the climax of the game. Although originally the ultimate focus of the story was supposed to be about the Empire battling the demons, it shifted over the course of my writing the story; it became more and more about James. And so I reworked the order of events to end when James's story ends.

My only regret is that you don't get to see a ten year old girl as the evil emperor of the world. You know, just in case Justin wasn't unthreatening enough to begin with.

Aw, you should make a bonus version of the game where that stuff actually happens.
I've been playing the 2.4 version of this and, before I knew it an hour passed. I'm rolling my eyes and some parts (evil evil evil) but I'm getting the unexpected chuckle. I also liked the intro a lot!

I'll try and get around to reviewing this one day, once I get further in. Since the updates, this is definitely not a one star game.

Thanks, more reviews would be awesome! Don't feel like you have to get all the way through before you review it, since it's somewhat long for an RPG Maker game. But the further you get the more I enjoy hearing what you have to say, of course!

For those not aware, I am also working on a sort of spiritual-sequel-slash-remake to this game, called Iniquity and Vindication. Check out the game page, which includes a short video.
Oh no I ran out of time just after I defeated that red boss thing. I only had the guards left to kill!

You can skip that puzzle. The mountain is optional.

Leave the mountain. Go to the next part of the game.

I was so sick of people emailing me asking the solution to this riddle that I made it optional. It now only unlocks a treasure room instead of unlocking the path to the boss. If you can't solve it you can keep playing with no problem.

Apparently people are going to keep emailing me anyway, forever and ever! Hahahahaha.... weep.

New in today's update: Encounter rate in almost all dungeons dropped significantly. You will now encounter between 25% and 50% fewer monsters, depending on the dungeon. Some monsters were made slightly more deadly to compensate.

Also, a few other minor issues were addressed. Mantra and Esuna now cure bleed status. A couple towns had their maps edited. When <spoiler> <spoiler>, you won't lose <spoiler>. Borrowed Time, a thief skill, is now sold in the scroll shop. All bear-type monsters sometimes drop bearspray, a new hairspray that grants poison immunity. A nerf here, a buff there. Etc.
What a game .I admit it's a little hard but it's great and FUNNY. Even if it's very hard to beat some enemies i like that it's not to easy.
Can i ask you a question? Some maps in the game are covered in water.I can't move. Please help

Oh, geez. RM2K3 decided to randomly corrupt some of my map data. Fortunately, nothing was permanently lost. I've corrected the problems and reuploaded the game.
