Sacred Reviews: Akropolis (Tech Demo)

Intro

I'll admit reviewing "Akropolis" is going to be difficult in some ways and feels pointless in others. For the curious this cancelled project was only released to the public in order for DE to participate in Release Day IX so this game was cancelled before it was even uploaded to the site. And this game died rather early on in development. As a result the only thing you can do in the tech demo is explore the maps and graphical assets that DE had created for this project. And this is partially why I consider reviewing this project kind of pointless since there isn't that much to discuss. To make matters worse it died so early on that there is effectively nothing to cover when it comes to the story or gameplay.

Story

As previously mentioned there really isn't anything to cover when it comes to this aspect of the game beyond a single bit where the player finds a dead body they can interact with.

Though, I'll admit being a dumb American I only fluently speak one language while knowing a handful of words in Spanish and Japanese. So I have no idea what is being said here. I suppose I could try to type this into google translate, but that feels like it would be more effort than it's worth considering the rest of the demo is just walking through dozens of doors in order to fully explore the station you are in.

Though oddly enough the lack of corpses in most rooms makes the station feel empty and that something really wrong happened here in the past. So I'm guessing this was going to be a horror game if this had continued development.

Graphics and Sound

Graphically the project is solid and features custom graphical assets which is always nice to see, but I wish the game did include more than one background track. Albeit the only background music the game does have definitely adds to the notion that the station were in is haunted or contains some sort of horrific monster that is going to hunt us down at some point. It just feels unsettling which adds to why I think this was going to be some sort of horror game. Though on a negative note the game's title screen is utterly devoid of music and features a pretty standard computer sound effect for when your flipping through your options.

Conclusion

While there isn't that much there I think this could have been a pretty solid project if it had continued. Though I suppose if it had continued the sheer size of the station would have potentially become an issue since it sprawls out over forty maps with some pathways leading the player around in loops while others will take you to dead ends. So I could see this being a problem if you found yourself being chased by a dangerous alien or something. Though as it stands I still wouldn't recommend this project unless your looking for some free assets since DE did give permission for people to use the graphical assets for their own projects or for a quick project to review for some quick makerscore. Albeit it will probably take longer to write a review for this project than to check out all of the maps.
