Anyways, umm... I'm loving this... Hm... But maybe, just maybe, their shading could shape up after the background, so it blends better? Hm, no, I don't think it's necessary, I'm just brainstorming.

Generally from what I've observed, animated films and such use hyper-detailed backgrounds and then simplified characters. I do that because a) I'm lazy and b) in the hope someday I won't be and I'll animate it somewhat.

Plus, I doubt I could replicate that kind of soft shading properly. My soft-shading is more like the stuff in my DP.

Yeah, they're generally less detailed because there would involve too much work detailing every frame... Still, it doesn't look bad, it looks very nice most times. (Such as in your case) and, about your soft shading... I'd recommend seeing some tutorials about pillowshading in pixelart, as it applies on normal drawings too. I think that might be your only major problem. (And I can't see the minor ones, 'm awful at critiquing people other than myself... xD)

Actually now that I think of it, this pic has that feeling of 3D characters on prerendered background that starts moving... Such as in the end of the Dollet mission. xD

(Tough not 3D, not as if that was a problem.)

Oooo, I see what you mean (FF8 geek), and I get that feeling too!

Hm, when I shade I usually do it respective of a light source, which is generally the problem with pillow shading as well (the sprite looks pillowy because of the colours going from dark to light inward rather than following a directive light source). I've never noticed myself doing that before, but I'll have a look through and see if I can find where I'm doing it.
I tend to do it to metal because I'm trying to really exaggerate the highlights, I think >.<

I do try and follow a particular light source at all times, especially in big pictures. This one was hard because I didn't create the light sources, and they're coming from two different sources. I did my best to portray that (Kumo has a left light source, while Levi has a right, for example) but I don't think I pulled it off well on Miri.

No, I'm terrible at backgrounds, and if I had drawn it it'd look horrendous.

And Jericho, the characters have original designs besides their cosplay outfits, and most of them are incredibly different to the outfits worn when they're in costume. I mean, Lulu is dark blonde when not dressed as Selphie and wears a soft blue dress. I still had to put in effort.

Looks really nice =) I just think there should more shadow on their backs, the guys I mean, because the only (visible) light source is the, uh, gold saucer (It reads Children's castle xD).

Anyway, I'm almost sure the background is from Tekkon Konkurito, or something like that =S
