Chao Tales, originally titled Chao Adventure and then Chao RPG started in my head WAAAAAAAY back in 2004 or so. I had started on it using RM2K3, but after a data corruption incident, I quit. Several years later after some personal and life set backs, I decided to do a fresh project, and actually start working on one of my original ideas, what I had finally named Chao Tales; reflecting the non-linear and alignment based gameplay.
What separates from Chao Tales from traditional RPGs is that all of the characters are...Chao. In the game, Chao are actually a highly sentient race, pretty much like humans. The game will have several unique features such as a retro 16-bit world map designed like the early Mario games...basically you run through the world map, and complete stages (areas) in order, free to go to them once completed any time. The game also counts as a hybrid-RPG, as it mixes RPG elements with classic platforming game elements.
