Awesome community game. But HARD!

Befuddle Quest 4 Dead is a community project that gathers different puzzle/minigames made by different people in one themed game. In a way I like the idea of a community project, because it motivates people to work on something, it integrates community members, and it gives more identity to the community. But even though I always liked the idea, I never got to play any community game, because I expected them to be ugly and schizophrenic, since they were made by people who didn't know (and probably didn't care) about what the other members of the project were doing. In other words, I expected a community game to be some sort of miscarried Frankenstein monster.

To my surprise, BQ4D is nothing like that. The puzzles feel incredibly well integrated, and there's a sense of wholesomeness to this game that is nothing like I expected, graphically and story-wise.

Overall graphics were nice, good use of RTP, no ugly maps, custom graphics fit well.

I was very inspired by the variety of puzzles and ideas on BQ4D. Playing a game like this is a great inspiration boost.

Quick comments on each puzzle:

kentona - My Pet Zombie
This is a very clever and somewhat original puzzle. I found the later levels to be hard, and needed a walkthrough. But this is great, and could definitely become a game in itself. Gotta say I love the moving panorama.

Liberty - Diggin' the Dead
I like the button mashing/combination puzzles in this. Mapping was unnecessarily confusing though. And I hated that I wrote down a lot of special move combinations when I had to use only one. Bad joke? Also gotta say that, for some morbid unknown reason, I enjoyed the fact of gathering corpse parts.

AABattery - Switching Things Up
The card position felt very random, and it's basically a trial-and-error minigame with a lot of talk-talk. At least the talk is funny. Would have been much better if the buckets mixed every time you missed, instead of allowing you to guess again.

Aten - 3 Cup Flip
Is this puzzle even possible? I don't think it is. Luckily it says right at the beginning "press SHIFT to win", which makes me wonder if there's a no-cheating solution.

Kazesui - Time is on my side
I like the whole time-stopping idea. But it's too hard. I guess I was just tired of so many switch puzzles when I got to this, so I tried guessing my way out of it, but didn't work, I confess I cheated. I was also not very happy with the slow movement.

Kazesui - Befuddle Guns
This is like a game inside a game. It's incredibly well made, and that's the kind of thing that makes me believe you can do anything in RM2K3. Smooth gameplay, cool graphics, I like it. But it's HARD. I cheated.

Hexatona - Perilous Pillar Paths
Fun simple puzzle. I liked it.

AznChipmunk - Casette Collector
This is probably my favorite. Not the smartest puzzle, but the coolest, and definitely the one I'll remember the most. I love the concept of having different tunes affecting different zombies in different ways. Very nice songs. But the quizzes were hell. Very slow trial-and-error.

Gibmaker - Crystal Crag
Another clever simple puzzle. I liked this. It's not too hard, not too easy, very dynamic, and the scenario looks good.

Mary4D - Haunted House
Pushing rocks to make way is probably the oldest puzzle concept in RM games. This one was too easy, besides being unoriginal.

SquishyWizard - Scarlet Facade
This was fun, because it felt like a game in itself too. But escaping zombies was too hard, I also cheated sometimes (using the shift key to pass walls). It would probably be better if the enemy damage didn't freeze Zack. This one's got a nice story, and I like the choice factor at the end. But HATED the switch puzzle. Completely unnecessary, and slowed down because of that message after every error.

thedjt - Bridges. How Ironic.
I'm not sure I understand this puzzle. If it was just about making as many bridges as requested on the signs, it's too easy. And weird. There was something about swimming too.

VideoWizard - Zombie Room
This one... isn't really a puzzle. Just walk through the room and reach the end?

Mikemc - Cabin Fervor
This one's gameplay is kinda random, but it's FUNNY as hell. Zombies dancing to the funniest song ever. Love it.

Fractal Advocate - Zombie Hard With A Vengeance
This was the last one I played. Felt like another switch puzzle. I was kinda tired, and I didn't get that 3-in-a-row part, so I quit. Only one I didn't get to the end, sorry. There was a bug in this, as the map wouldn't open if you had played My Pet Zombie before (some switch misprogramming).

Craze - Zombieconomy Sim
This one looked like a clever and complex game, which could also be a game in itself. But after I found out how straightforward it was, I didn't like it that much. I just had to send ghosts for food, zombies for gold, and reapers for bones. Outcomes were excessively random, but following the obvious instructions, that appeared to be no way of losing. It looked good as a legitimate SIM in RM2K3, and had potential. The concept is interesting, but like I said, not too well executed.

I expected this to be a light, short, fun game. It's fun, but not really light and short, because some of the puzzles are too hard, and that's my only complaint. Every member of this project should post a walkthrough for their part, it's important! I really wanted to get to know all the puzzles and beat the game, so staying for too long in a single one was often annoying. In order to actually beat the whole game no cheats (if that's even possible), it should take a lot of time, and more than that, a lot of BRAINS.

Grrrr. I'll collect YOUR bones.
Thanks for the review! I'm glad that I was able to challenge your perception that community games are necessarily bad games.
Thanks! In retrospect, the quiz puzzles were too tough, but I wanted to try to implement something to make sure players were paying attention.
Glad you liked my part. I'll admit, I really did drop the ball on the battle system, but I wasn't sure how much time I was going to have to work on it, so I kept it fairly basic. Oh, and the switch puzzle at the end was to ensure that my submission was indeed a puzzle. If you fail the other parts too many times, you're able to skip directly to the switch puzzle, and I kind of wanted the players to do SOMETHING instead of just failing to pass if they really wanted to skip my submission. Anyway, thanks for the review!
In my puzzle, 3-in-a-row was supposed to be a joke, but I guess it ended up being a red herring.

I was really trying to build something intuitive/self-explanatory enough that it wouldn't need a walkthrough, which is part of why I haven't been releasing one - seeing where people get stuck lets me know what I did wrong.
lol Everybody hates my 'puzzle'. Anyway, good review!
Sorry calunio, but I'm no Miracle Worker...
In Cabin Fervor, try kicking the bonfire towards the cabin. This is my gift to those who dislike arrow puzzles :).
